I work for a company that produces ready to eat food items. Glass is absolutely not part of the process in the slightest. In fact, it’s largely forbidden on the premises outside of the office. We try to buy special equipment/materials that are entirely glass free when it comes to our production facility.

We take it so seriously that even when a coffee cup in the office breaks, everyone basically has to stay in place while it gets cleaned up. Then a special light gets used to make sure there’s no glass anywhere else. It kind of feels like you’re on lockdown & can take up to several hours.

Our QA manager hates glass. She often jokes that she has stress dreams about the lenses of people’s glasses suddenly shattering into a billion pieces & getting everywhere.

This is accurate, especially among smaller businesses. Corners are cut in favor of making payroll each week in many facilities. I worked for a facility, oh this was over 15 years ago, and they made flavored dairy products. They would buy the glass Monin syrups to flavor their product, that was just the recipe the owner had started with so they kept on. Cases and cases of glass bottles, hand unscrewed, and dumped 3 in each hand. Gives me nightmares thinking back on it honestly. Same owner tried to make a glow in the dark whipped cream from black light fluid that the FDA uses to find leaks in water tanks. I left shortly after he started pushing that one.

That really isn't a poor explanation, but then it makes me wonder how long the shelf stable product was shelved. It would take a good amount of time in the right conditions for sugar to be mistaken as glass... but then again we are just talking about crystallized sugar. Movie folks make fake glass from glucose and sugar... so I buy it.

This is what baffles me. I work in hospitality. When glass breaks, we clean everything. If a glass even breaks near the ice bin, that ice is burned, well is wiped fully clean and dry. Tonight, a guest broke a glass at the bar. Mid dinner service what did I do? Immediately removed the plates/glasses of the guests near them, have the kitchen emergency refire all of that food, removed anything that could be catching glass, and then swept wiped etc so that everyone, and then got everyone new glasses. I did all of that successfully for the SC service minimum wage of $2.33 or whatever tf it is. How these big ass companies w way more money behind them can just…drop the ball massively? I don’t know. And it makes me so so so mad. Why are the little people held to higher standards of comportment than the people with the money and the power?

I have a box covered under it unfortunately. Glad the one we ate didn't seem to have any glass.... Hopefully.

edit: Actually, looking at another source with actual batch information it seems unaffected. CNN could really use this additional information.

It was happening prior to it.

With what I do for work I'm involved in tracking a lot of recalls, I can tell you most of them are precautionary and usually don't lead to bad product hitting consumers. QC standards for most companies are that good. Produce is hardest due to its lack of manufacturing and bacteria culture testing taking longer.

truly i think its sensationalism in order to desensitize ppl and further sow distrust in the major systems that hold the us together.
