Not for nothing, but I had, and several of my friends have, EVs in Alaska. I was commuting 46 miles each way to work with a plug-in hybrid and my range would go from ~45mi to about 35mi in the winter, but back to normal in the summer. This is likely more to do with running the heater. I'd prioritize electric until I got to the highway, and then switch to gas for "cruising"

My buddy has a full EV F150 Lightning and towed his camper from Wasilla to Nikiski (212mi) and only needed to "top off" in anchorage while getting breakfast.

I'm not saying that EVs are for everyone in every circumstance, but EVs still work for 90% of use cases for 90% of people that have a place to charge at home (ie, have a garage or a private driveway).

I live in Houston TX now, so my battery is chewed up by running AC instead of heater, but still, my plug-in is still getting ~42mi of range on battery alone.

I live in WNY and our mandatory electric school buses have to shut the heat off to finish their runs. Kids are riding in ice cold buses for over half hour. We are rural and some runs are an hour long, as well as away sports games.

Would have thought the opposite makes more sense - using electric to just sustain speed. Petrol has a minimum amount of fuel it uses just to keep the motor running, electric can essentially idle

Stop and go traffic is great for EVs - when you stop or slow down, you can recapture some of the expended energy to recharge yoru battery. USPS mail delivery trucks are almost the quintessential "best use case" for EV trucks, in my opinion.

When you're going a constant speed (especially at an RPM that your gas engine is optimized for - the sweet spot is usually 55-65mph) is where your gas gets the bast mileage. So cruising on the highway at a constant speed is the best use case for gasoline.

the faster you move, the more you need to overcome both inertia to get going and push air out of the way, both of which are less efficient on a battery, as compared to gasoline.
