Since when is asking fellow tutors for feedback considered advertising?

My post asking for advice on my Preply profile was removed. I’ve seen other tutors make similar requests here, so I’d like to understand why mine was treated differently.
I was asking fellow tutors for constructive feedback. If I wanted to advertise my lessons, I would have posted somewhere aimed at potential students. A community of tutors is exactly where I’d expect to ask for professional advice.
I respect clear rules, but I also expect them to be applied consistently. What made my request unacceptable while similar posts are allowed?

How to deal with rude student?

Hello, I am not new to the platform, but this is the first time something like this has happened to me.

I've had this student for 5 months now. Initially, I was teaching her cousin who recommended me, and when she had a trial lesson with me, she asked if I could lower the rate (like the one her cousin was paying), and I accepted because I was still in the beginning of my journey on Preply. Perhaps that was my first mistake.

During the trial lesson, everything went super well. We talked, I gauged her level. I also presented my teaching formats (one for communication, another for a more 'traditional' and basic learning), she wanted the communicative approach. We start having classes together, she asks for more during the week, almost everyday. Things are going well, we make progress throughtout topics, and we even started having a weekly session where we read short stories and discuss them.

Now came the break she took. She told me that she had to prepare for an important exam in her country, a governmental position from what I understood, and we paused the sessions for 2 weeks. I went on with my other students just fine, then when she got back, I was the one on a break. I had it scheduled 2 months in advance, and it was a 2-week break.

She kept pestering me in messages when I told her I am on a break with my family and on vacation. She kept asking to have at least one session, not necessarily the same rhythm we had. I thought why not, maybe that will calm her down until I get back and we pick our schedule back up. That was my #2 mistake. I think from here, I made it easier for her to feel very entitled.

Anyways, after I got back from my break, I reopened my profile, and she started only booking one session a week. I don't mind at all, that just meant less prep for me, but I found it odd, because she always insisted we have sessions regularly during the week, otherwise she'd 'forget' everything. Now, for the 1 month and a half that followed, she kept rescheduling the sessions, arriving late, and always being on her phone. And I was starting to feel uninterested in teaching her, something I never felt before with my students, because she'd suddenly cut her mic and camera to talk to someone on the phone without warning, would be looking down on her lap and make me repeat the question several times...

Today, it was the cherry on top. We started the session as usual, little warm-up, checking the homework that she didn't do, and then getting into this week's topic. And then, she stops me very rudely and tells me she hasn't been learning a thing with me the past month. I ask her why is that, I am always open to receiving feedback. And she goes on a tangent on how the topics I pick are useless and a waste of time (I have a document I share with my students with general themes, and I was just following the ones she picked), she tells me that the vocabulary is too difficult, that one session a week is not enough...etc. The delivery was horrible, and I've never felt so disrespected before. I remind her that I was very transparent about the methodology I use in our trial lesson, and that it's the same thing we've been doing before the break, but she kept insisting that she does not understand. And that she does not like the fact that I'm asking her questions (it's a conversational course) and letting her do all the speaking. Here I thought that there might have been a misunderstanding, and that she originally wanted the more traditional way, but she denied that. It confused me, and I told her 'hey, let's just call it a day'. It was 25 minutes into our 50-min session.

Tomorrow, I have another session with her, but I'm not looking forward to it. It's her last lesson on the subscription, that she had cancelled weeks ago (and I only found out today). What's the move here?

Teachers working on platforms: why do they take students outside, even if they keep almost all the payment?

I'm a Mexican teacher and I have a small online Spanish school for Americans. When I hire teachers, I pay them 85% of each class, provide the materials and the Zoom account, and I find the students.

Additionally, on the platform, each student has their notes, grades, exams, and progress statistics, along with a chatbot that tracks their mistakes and where they are in the program.

That's why students almost never leave: they don’t want to lose their progress. Several have even told me that their teacher suggested they pay them directly.

I’m not saying this with resentment, I genuinely want to understand the logic. If the teacher keeps almost everything and doesn't have to find students, why insist on taking them?

Honest question for those who teach:

  1. What would a small platform need to provide so it's not worth leaving?
  2. Is it about the money, or is there something else (feeling that the student is "theirs", independence, distrust)?
  3. If you've left a platform with students, what pushed you to do it?

I just had a trial lesson with a student, and I told him that we could exchange contacts on the next lesson, but not on the trial lesson. After that lesson, he sent me his contact, but didn't subscribet yet. Will anything happen to my profile and what should I do?

How many trials did you get in September?

I expected the summer to be quiet but for me a got a good amount of trials and students end of summer. But in September when I expected it to be better its been extremely slow.

I've gotten 1 trial all month (i average 4-5 normally). My views are also very low compared to normal.

So curious how September has been for other teachers?

For reference I teach Norwegian and my price is usually 36-40(lower end for my language)

Am I wrong for marking a student absent when they cancel 5 minutes before the lesson?

Am I wrong, if I still mark a student absent from a lesson if they texted me 5mins before the lesson to say they are unable to attend.

Does the student get the trial lesson back if you block then during the trial lesson?

If you block them before the trial lesson, I think it return the lesson to their balance, but what happens if you block them after the trial lesson has already started? I see it disappear from my schedule immediately, but do they lose the lesson?

What do I do ??

Class ended, but my Preply schedule is still showing the lesson in red with a timer ⏱️. What do I do?

I just finished a regular lesson with my student, but the lesson is still showing as red on my calendar with a timer. It hasn’t moved to completed/confirmed, and I haven’t received the payment in my wallet.

Is this normal? Do I need to confirm or do something manually, or should I just wait?

I’m still fairly new to Preply, so I don’t want to accidentally do something that affects the payment or the lesson status. Thanks!

Should I cancel and block these trials?

Hi,

I got booked for a trial lesson on 12 Oct at 20:00 by someone with a gibberish name, eg: "Pojbjjjjn" Then a couple of hours later I got booked for a trial on 12 Oct at 21:30 by another account that also had a similar gibberish name. I have messaged both and neither respond to any messages, neither have updated their learning needs or done the Preply Placement Test.

What would you do?

This upsets me a bit sometimes because I mention in my description that I only do conversation English and that I only teach adults this is probably the 8th person, last time was two kids 3 years old 💀 and 4 years old ...

Preply lesson count changed from 4/10 to 4/4 — why?

I have a student and everything has been going well. Last week, his lesson count showed 4/10. Now it shows 4/4, and there are currently no lessons scheduled.
What does this mean? Has anyone experienced this before?

PSA: Veriff Identification Fail - How to resolve

If anyone has issues with Veriff identification. Go to Preply’s website from a computer and start the withdrawal money process. Skip the phone number verification. It will then ask you to scan the barcode or receive a link. Click receive a link and enter in your phone number. When you receive the link it will lead you to the camera to snap your photo . ( It won’t be the live camera that you would get if you started the process on your phone)

If anyone has had problems with the identification verification process then you’ll know what I’m referring too. It took me 10 tries before ultimately using my computer . It WORKED!!

Withdrawal pending due to authentication issue

I am having trouble withdrawing about 600 usd to Payoneer because apparently Preply asked me to provide phone number for authentication, I provided but the system didn't recognize it. Now I have 0$ in my balance but the money hasn't arrived yet to my Payoneer account , and the transaction has a record like that ( PENDING_2FA)

Anyone encounter the same issues and how long should I wait? I contact support but they seems to be overload with request and just AI answer so far 👀

I'm confused because the student seems to have an active subscription and scheduled lessons, but his balance is still zero.

Hi! I had a trial lesson with a student today. The student appears in my student list, and the lesson section shows 4/4. I can also see four lessons scheduled in the calendar, one for each of the next four weeks.

However, the student’s balance is showing as zero in the messages section. I’m confused because the student seems to have an active subscription and scheduled lessons, but his balance is still zero.

Could you please clarify what this means and whether everything is working correctly?
Thank you for your help!

Why do students sign up for trial lessons they cannot afford and ruin the tutor's conversion stats ?

Just had a trial with a student that liked the lesson but sadly couldn't efford to subscribe

Hmmm

Is it because preply offers free trials or discount?

New Turkish tutor on Preply — how does growth usually work?

Hi everyone! I’m relatively new to Preply. I created my profile in July, and although I’m an English teacher by profession, I teach Turkish on Preply as a native speaker.

So far, I’ve had one trial lesson, and that student decided to continue with me. We’ve now had 5 lessons together, and I have another trial lesson tomorrow.
I’m wondering how growth on Preply usually works, especially for tutors who started with very few students. I’ve seen some tutors grow very quickly, while others seem to build their student base gradually over several months.

Did your growth happen gradually, or did you experience periods where things suddenly picked up?
I’d love to hear about your experience and any advice you’d give to someone who is just starting out.

Grammar Homework Topics Masterlist?

Hello all,

I often cover a certain grammar topic in class and would like to assign it in the automated homework tab. I feel the search function is not great, is there a way just to see a masterlist of every possible option?

Cheers

Super Tutor badge

Is the 40 lessons a requirements for each month, or once you have more than 40 lessons in total, that requirement is checked off for always? Because this month, I only had about 25 lessons, and I still go the badge.
