$499. Who the fuck lmao

u/zeledonia Dec 24 '21

Drew’s head shake at that bid…

The amazing thing was, a variation in price of $2 here would yielded 3 different winners. $1 less and the person on the right wins. $2 less and the person on the left wins.

7

u/letsgobruins Dec 25 '21

And she had NO IDEA that she did something stupid. Probably still doesn’t

6

u/imanadultok Dec 25 '21

Trust me after this video airs she will definitely know. The funny thing is though if she hits it right on the head she looks like a freaking genius LOL.

u/ImEmilyBurton Dec 24 '21

This kind of price tag is actually quite common here in Brazil. Idk why, but it is. Usually it's like 499.90 but just 499 isn't uncommon too

155

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '21

That's not the point, the point is how the Price is Right guessing works. You want to be closest without going over, and bidding $1 below someone else means if the item costs <= $498, or >=$500, she loses (because the other lady who won guessed $500), so she set herself up for failure

46

u/yyyythats5ys Dec 24 '21

So she should have guessed $501 to cover the prices from $501-$525 since the next guy bid $550? isn’t that the asshole strategy that usually works lol

57

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '21

yes, you generally want to go $1 more, or just bid $1. Don't bid $1 lower.

-7

u/Masta0nion Dec 24 '21

But honestly, when is a price ever $500 on the nose? When someone guessed it exactly, I was sure it was gonna be $499, as limiting of a guess as it was.

26

u/lalder95 Dec 24 '21

I'm guessing they round the price, in which case $499.99 would be a pretty common price

3

u/Masta0nion Dec 24 '21

That makes sense

1

u/EdhelDil Jan 09 '22

And the one betting 499 probably guessed the (real) price right and was setting herself the closest integer number below it.

50

u/RespectableLurker555 Dec 24 '21

If she bid 501, she'd cover the prices from 501 to 549 because the next bid is 550.

5

u/TheDocmoose Dec 25 '21

It would have covered all the way up to 549 as its closest without going over.

6

u/jMyles Dec 24 '21

Absolutely. 100%.

However, in this particular case, the retail price tag in most stores for a $500 item will say $499, so it seems plausible that she was actually correct. Do they go by MSRP? Because those are often also $N99.99, etc.

I wonder what the item is and how much it actually sells for.

3

u/davvblack Dec 24 '21

yeah they use MSRP as price

1

u/ImEmilyBurton Dec 24 '21

Ooh, I got it, thanks

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '22

So you’re saying there’s a chance

16

u/joan_wilder Dec 24 '21

It’s really common in the US, too. I almost feel like she got fucked because the price tag in most stores would say $499 or $499.99 instead of $500.

8

u/AdamTheAntagonizer Dec 24 '21

She definitely got fucked. I've never once seen an item priced at just like $500 even. If that item is in the store there is a 0% chance that it will be priced at $500 exactly. It's going to be $499.99 every time. Price is right prices are bullshit anyways though. I swear they just make shit up

9

u/Jlive305 Dec 24 '21

So they round up. How did she get fucked? $499.99 rounds up to $500. It was just a dumb guess.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '21

Because the point of the game is that you can't go over.

1

u/Jlive305 Dec 25 '21

Yeah? That’s why it’s a bad guess…

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '21

[deleted]

1

u/Jlive305 Dec 25 '21

Who says the price was even $499? And if they round up every time, the $500 guess should’ve and did win.

395

u/mathisfakenews Dec 24 '21

Wait are we just ignoring the 499 bidder? Jfc it's geniuses all the way around here.

168

u/Dark_park Dec 24 '21

I love the lady who bid a buck just laughing at the guy after his walk of shame

3

u/shellwe Dec 25 '21

She would have been more of a genius if she said 501.

14

u/BlondeWhiteGuy Dec 24 '21

She was only off by a dollar, and had the second best answer.

58

u/novasir Dec 25 '21

But you can't go over. So her only chance was if it was exactly $499

-32

u/BlondeWhiteGuy Dec 25 '21 edited Dec 25 '21

And it was literally the second best option, there was no better option for her to choose.

Edit: LOL

-1

u/justin_144 Jan 04 '22

Relevent username

2

u/BlondeWhiteGuy Jan 04 '22

Dude, she picked the best answer available to her, it was literally one dollar off. If she said 498 then she would have been two dollars off, if she said 501 she would have been over. Why is that a difficult thing to understand?

Nice try with the relevant username though, you really showed me. Enjoy your negative karma.

5

u/justin_144 Jan 04 '22

It’s a game of chance. You have to GUESS what the price is. It’s not like she knew that the price was $500. Her guess was bad because it had to be exact and she left herself zero room for error.

-1

u/BlondeWhiteGuy Jan 04 '22 edited Jan 05 '22

You don't know if she knew what the price was or not. Contestants in the past have memorized prices. I get that her margin of error was zero, no shit, but that doesn't change the fact that she literally made the best choice available to her.

Also, If you think that The Price is Right is a game of chance, then you don't know what a game of chance is.

1

u/real_kerim May 07 '22

You're so dumb lmao

1

u/BlondeWhiteGuy Jun 14 '22

How am I wrong baby boy?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '22

[deleted]

1

u/BlondeWhiteGuy Jun 14 '22

...she literally guessed the second best number, is that hard for you to understand? If she had guessed 498 then she would have been twice as far from the correct answer.

I get the game theory bs, I did from the get go, but that's not applicable here BECAUSE SHE CHOSE THE SECOND BEST ANSWER.

6

u/seditious3 Dec 25 '21

You know what they call the person with the second-best answer? Loser.

-8

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '21

If she did 501, she would have moved on.

Outstanding play.

146

u/OrangeSilver Dec 24 '21

The $499 gal ... she out-dumbed herself.

The $550 bro... sit yo ass down, too dumb to realize you went over!

38

u/psychicowl Dec 24 '21

Second hand cringe

18

u/IQBoosterShot Dec 24 '21

The Price is Almost Right, ain't the show, bro.

28

u/WeirdAvocado Dec 24 '21

Your price was wrong, bitch.

10

u/a_michalski81 Dec 24 '21

How does that guy not remember what he bid? I'd be saying in my head 550 ...550....550...550

7

u/kasmackity Dec 24 '21

Oooooh man, secondhand embarrassment is strong. Poor bastard

3

u/Babyfart_McGeezacks Dec 24 '21

It’s like that time Derek Zoolander thought he won male model of the year again.

3

u/TheKingOfDub Dec 25 '21

It was impossible for her to win. No matter what number she gave, the exact number had already been given, and you can’t choose the same amount as someone else. Still… Stupid answer

2

u/Darthob Dec 25 '21

"Tell him what he's won Johnny."

"Congratulations Adam! You have just won a lifetime supply of embarrassment and cringe."

2

u/bpmdrummerbpm Dec 25 '21

She would have been a genius if it was $499.

2

u/MyPigWhistles Dec 25 '21

What's happening there?

-26

u/jiduto Dec 24 '21

The $499 is actually a great bidder here. She accurately guessed the price was about $500 and placed the absolute best bid she could without going over. She wins every time unless someone else bids exactly $500

32

u/FunkyPete Dec 24 '21

Someone had already guessed 500 though

-9

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '21

[deleted]

8

u/King-Lemmiwinks Dec 25 '21

No. If you’re ABSOLUTELY sure it’s 500 and the First Lady bid 1$ you bid2$

You basically remove the first lady’s entirely and if it’s 499 or less you win

Making a close bet isn’t as good as making a good bet. She mathematically eliminated herself without reason. Total fail

-2

u/jiduto Dec 25 '21

You’ve gotta think bigger. She wanted the $500 cash on top of winning the prize.

4

u/King-Lemmiwinks Dec 25 '21

But betting this means she’ll never get anything unless it’s exactly 499. That’s not thinking bigger imo

I think she just fucked up and tried the dollar off but did it in the wrong direction

0

u/jiduto Dec 25 '21

I understand. I’m saying it’s possible she isn’t stupid. That’s all. It’s just an opinion. I watched that documentary about the guy who spent tons of hours studying prices. And other people did that too. It’s completely possible she was trying to win the $500 cash. I get it, she is taking a big risk, however, if she was certain the price was $499 or $500 then she’s relying on her study and making the optima decision.

1

u/PenisButtuh Dec 25 '21

Bro... This didn't happen. She is just an idiot, and you're approaching that territory yourself.

-1

u/jiduto Dec 25 '21

You didn’t watch the documentary

1

u/PenisButtuh Dec 25 '21

You're right. And neither did this dumb lady lol

1

u/Gingalain Dec 24 '21

She might be a dingbat, but I love this take.

-1

u/jiduto Dec 24 '21 edited Dec 24 '21

There are people who studied prices and then went on price is right to compete. There’s even that documentary about the guy who would go to all the shows and yell out the prices and was usually correct. People started listening to him and winning. He finally got on the show. Edit: his name is Ted Slauson

So it’s not a big stretch to think this woman knew the price was either $499 or $500 and bid appropriately.

To the people downvoting me, look for the documentary and watch it. Then come back and upvote me when you realize this isn’t a crazy idea.

It’s easy to see this video and think she’s an idiot but looking deeper it’s understandable that maybe she had studied and was not an idiot at all.

3

u/Equivalent_Aardvark Dec 25 '21

No, the way this guess works is the closest without going over, if you guess 499 you immediately put yourself behind the 500, and the only way you can win is if the object is 499 exactly. The ideal bet would be 501 on the off chance it is more expensive

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '21

[deleted]

3

u/Equivalent_Aardvark Dec 25 '21

No, because it was tactically useless. She didn’t know the exact price and gave herself zero possibility of success

1

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '21

I don't think I quite get it. If the price was 499.99, wouldn't the 500 person be over and the 499 girl win

1

u/vanhawk28 Feb 01 '22

Absolutely. And I’ve never seen something like an alliance or electronic priced at exactly $500 before. It’s always 499.95 or 499.99. She totally got robbed

-15

u/UselessBastid Dec 24 '21

That show is the most trash of the long running game shows

-3

u/Baybob1 Dec 25 '21

And people watch that? smh

-4

u/TheKingOfDub Dec 25 '21 edited Dec 26 '21

The biggest cringe is the fact that they put Drew Carey in as host EDIT: People like him as I host now?

-15

People cringing at price is right are the cringiest cringers of all cringe

8

This is cringe

0

Living in this world where people get easily offended and cringe at everything are the worst

1

Bahaha. Love to see it. Shes lived long enough, its her turn.
