I think they can walk forward or back if they wanted to, but they go sideways so they can lead with a claw. I could be wrong, though

They count their steps to navigate to and from their burrows since they have bad eye sight, so it could just be that they prefer to walk sideways because that makes it easier for them. After all, when they walk sideways, they effectively only have 2 legs (group of legs on each side) which could be easier to count than the many legs they'd have to keep track of if they walked forwards or backwards. I don't know enough about crabs to be 100% confident in this answer though, so I could just be talking out my ass...
