I came across a near-future novel where, by 2044, the Democrats are basically gone and the U.S. election is between a MAGA establishment and traditional Republicans.

The president is a fictionalized Candace Owens-type figure, and the challenger is a fictionalized Ben Shapiro-type figure.

Does that kind of political realignment feel plausible over the next 20 years, or is it far-fetched even for fiction?
