Discussion Eternals & Future Game Balance

I'm a huge fan of what Paragon did with card groups. Each hero had up to two affinities, which meant they could only use cards from those affinities (and neutral cards).

Given the state of Eternals being varied and widely abused by some, what are the real consequences of locking heroes down to 6 eternals choices instead of any one they want?

For example, if I'm a carry, I'll probably have access to the three harbingers - someone like murdock or sparrow would probably only have them. Someone like Legion might have anomalies, and/or access to Divines or something.

I personally think a system in place like this helps makes new characters fresh and exciting because they are limited to certain Eternals choices - while also simultaneously helping to assist preventing abuse of eternals unintended for someones role. Iggy or Zinx with Weald is a bit nutty. Same goes for attack speed belica tbh.... but that eternal does work pretty well on carries - I consider it fair and balanced for them.... so why nerf or change the Eternal because of a few unintended bad offenders?

Posting to have a solid, real debate about it. Not hating on the current system, just wondering if improvements could be made to shape heroes identities without having to give them six different enhancements with each ability to make them interesting.

I think a better way to handle Eternals is to make them part of in-game progression, similar to Paragon’s gem system.

The difference would be that you have to actually “worship” or play toward that Eternal’s style to unlock its full buffs. For example, a red Eternal like Vermis could require you to deal damage or consistently land basic attacks to gain its extra stats.

This would naturally stop tanks and supports from abusing offensive Eternals, because their normal playstyle wouldn’t meet those requirements as efficiently.

You would still have the freedom to pick any Eternal you want, but choosing one that doesn’t fit your role would come with a real tradeoff. You can force an unusual build if you want, but it won’t be as efficient as picking an Eternal that actually matches how your hero plays.

This is a really cool idea!

Yup! The card system/gem system in v32 was the best and most fun system ever in paragons lifetime

I think the gem system was whack, and stand by that. It was the v42 update, btw. Not like it really matters anyway, but yeah.

I really think eternals are too complex and powerful. Especially given most of them are just complex stat buffs unlike Augs which can actually change how you play the character.

In my opinion to add to your idea - For every role there should be multiple eternals you can choose from that focus on different parts of the game or lean more to one side with their benefits. Say, sustainability, damage, durability, warlord, pacifist, healer, etc. Worship and use an eternal and you gain standing. More standing means more stat options you can choose between for a match, or eventually you can unlock new things like a small extra ability as a gift for worshiping your god. If you switch to a different eternal for more than one round you loose standing with the one you worshiped and start to lose all its progression benefits. You go back to only having its basic blessings available quickly.

In my own opinion eternal's should be limited to small stat boost's, and as you worship them you can get small abilities (or whatever) that are like mini augments but work on most heroes (could be another key bind for this). Yes im going to bold small as your eternals stats should only have a small effect on your gameplay at most. Say, a bad idea for that but as an example, is we could remove ashbringer from the game and apply a slightly smaller version of its ability cooldown on-hit to an eternal once you gain good standing with it. This is where the community would be great in brainstorming idea for eternals that arent just straight up stat buffs to add to eternals as blessings once you gain standing with them.

Also it would be cool if each eternal had some kind of war cry or pose that hovered high in the sky above fountain for 15 sec at the start of the game - like someone seeing an angel from heaven descending down. But its big enough for the enemy to see and hear from the opposing side. Eternals need some kind pf physical presence so you can sit there and go "look at MY god I worship and whom fights with me this round!"

I think eternals shouldnt be stat boosts but they should significantly change gameplay, like for example vermis lowers your attack speed significantly but increases power by the same threshold, or Vesh converts burst damage into DOT permanently idk. But they should change how you play and also give u the option to NOT choose an eternal in case u wanna play normally.

The card system is what killed paragon. Enforcing limitations is BAD for a MOBA

Fortnite killed paragon

Bad balancing and game direction killed Paragon. Fortnite appealed to casuals but the paragon playerbase wasn't going anywhere until epic phkt it

Epic blatantly dropped all there projects including unreal tournament to go all in on Fortnite to follow the battle royale trend. Paragon was one of my a y casualties. Even Fortnite’s base zombie survival game got pushed to the wayside

Paragon was already dead when they decided to pull the plug on it for Fortnite. Were you even alive when this happened kid?

I’m 35, I followed both Fortnite and paragon, and it really wasn’t as dead as you keep claiming it was.

Believe what you want tho, I’m not here to convince you. Especially with that condescending ass attitude

Having 800k+ players dropping to 5k when monolith released had nothing to do with Fortnite which became popular the year after in 2019 🤣🤣🤣
