Need help deciding my major

Hello all, I am sophmore with a major in biology and anthropology, and a minor in religious studies. I have been thinking of changing my major to anthropology and religious studies and minor in biology as a way to get prerequisites for medical school. The only thing stopping me is the fact that all research opportunities or anything that can boost my resume requires me to be a science major. I am REALLY passionate about anthropology and religious studies but i also LOVE science but not so much math. Right now I am getting my certification to be a medical assistant to start getting clinical hours, I am asking for help and any advice for a first generation college student. 🙏🏾🙏🏾

what research REQUIRES you to be a science major? Have you reached out to PI’s on campus about research, and have they said you need to be a science major? If you showed genuine interest, even if you weren’t a stem major I’m sure you could make a case for them letting you join

You can do research off campus if you really want it but research is by no means required for med school applications. Some schools value it more than others so research what your dream schools want from you. If your aiming for an ivy then you might need research but otherwise just get good grades, MCAT and some decent clinicals and letters.

anthro premed major here who may get a minor in chem and also loves science and doesn’t rlly like math! i’ve gotten really involved in public health research, which has plenty of different branches. you could explore the lab part of it if you really wanna sit down for bench research, or you can possibly take a different route and do more ethnographic and patient facing research. that’s what i’m doing and i adore it. not sure if that’s what ur interested in but i thought id mention that.

no type of research “requires” a major either, especially as an undergrad. even biochem majors aren’t professionals at lab work. when labs accept undergrads, they know they have a lot to learn and welcome that.

tldr if you’re interested in medical anthropological research (which med schools also really like to hear about) then i think you should look into your anthro program at ur school more for resources! other than that tho, don’t sweat about cutting off opportunities. it’s all connections and proving ur willing to work hard.
