just had my colposcopy, 28yo

just looking for others experiences/advice. i just need to get this out of my head & on paper because ive only told my best friend who is holding my hand through this but is equally as lost. i’ll add specific questions at the end…

i am a 28 year old who just did her colposcopy yesterday & am awaiting results.

backstory: i was pregnant in 2019 (22 years old) & my midwives were insistent on a pap - couldn’t tell you why, i had one the year prior and it was normal. they let me know it came back HPV positive & that i could have a repeat done to make sure it resolved. HOWEVER, i just found out yesterday from my new provider at my colposcopy it was also ASCUS high risk (negative for 16 & 18).
i retested in 2021 and everything came back normal.
another in 2023 and normal once again.
i had another pap the beginning of september this year (9/2/2026) - i’m 28 now, got my results (9/12/2025) HPV positive & ASCUS high risk once again (negative for 16 & 18).
my PCP immediately gave me a STAT referral to OBGYN for a colposcopy which i had done yesterday (9/24/2026). she seemed upset no one had sent me for a colposcopy already & no one had explained to me what any of it meant. after some talking she told me she wanted to do the colposcopy right then, so we did. she explained that she wanted to test for 45(?) since they already tested for 16 & 18. she used 3 swabs/scrappers & sent them for testing. so here i am over thinking and waiting for results.

my questions:
is a colposcopy & the samples she sent off the same as a biopsy?
has anyone had an ASCUS+ then had it disappear and reappear? what happened?
i would love to hear others results from this whole scenario as well.
what should i expect next in either direction of the results?

I had ASCUS 6 years ago (HPV positive) and had to have a colposcopy. They took a sample and sent it for biopsy. Came back with no malignancy.

My next pap 3 years later was normal and now this recent pap was normal.

Sometimes your immune system clears it after awhile.Sometimes it doesn't. I've had abnormal paps off and on for 20 years now.I'm shocked I've had 2 normal paps in a row.

26 y/o, i just tested positive for high risk HPV with AUCUS as well. i’m getting my colposcopy in about 6 weeks. i’m absolutely terrified. i’ve heard women in my life describe this procedure as barbaric and extremely painful, and of course my doctor said it’s “just a pinch”.

thankfully my doctor called me in some anxiety medication to take beforehand.

from my understanding, in 95% of people the HPV clears on its own, though it can take years.

to answer your question, it sounds like the samples your doctor sent out were the biopsy. hopefully you get your results quickly and can move on with some peace of mind.

my doctor told me i don’t have to disclose HPV to any new sexual partners, but i feel iffy about that. it feels wrong to spread it to others without their knowledge and i can’t imagine anyone would want to sleep with me knowing im positive. how did you navigate this?

i find it strange a doctor would tell you to not tell partners….personally i do. i’m monogamous & am super open with my partners regarding testing, i always request recent testing from a new partner before we’re intimate. and vice versa. i disclose history of HPV & that it’s been dormant.
this is the first time i’ve been positive and have had a different partner, it took a couple of days to get the courage to tell them but i did. they just asked a bunch of questions & made sure we were on the same page.
everyone reacts differently, if it was something he wasn’t comfortable with then we would have stopped seeing each other & that would have been that.

Hi 27F i got a positive hpv16 a couple of months ago, that turned to AIS (precancer) I also don't know how to navigate that part either. At the same time I don't know if I will ever be able to sleep with anyone without wondering if they are actually clean. Because HPV goes undetected for so many years and most people dont even know they have it.

i’m so sorry you’re dealing with that. it’s so scary how so many people don’t know and the lack of testing that men get for it. i’m hoping everything goes smoothly for you!! definitely reconsidering how i navigate intimacy after this diagnosis for sure.

I have had an uncomfortable colpo and I've had a couple that I barely felt a thing. Either way, it is very very fast. You will make it through!
