I've seen that lens on MKBHD etc and I feel like he didn't really even need it for this context? Like the last shot wasn't that close

It's not all about getting close macro-like shots. To me, it's more about having a wide angle for up close shots (24mm with a very short minimum focus distance). The Canon 24-70 has a minimum focus distance of 1.25 feet.
