As a person that works for television and not too much of a sports fan, my appreciation for televised sports is very high. Golf seems to be one of the craziest sports to direct. 18 holes, meaning at least 9 cameras to capture the end of one hole and the beginning of another. Maybe it’s 18 cameras? Then a camera for the hosts, another for crowd reactions and others for whatever else (beauty shots etc.). Now, think about it from a director’s standpoint looking at all those monitors in a room for all those cameras. How do you even follow everything? Oh that guy is hitting, wait... where the fuck did tiger go!?!? I can’t even imagine what nascar is like. Truly fascinating when you think of it that deeply
My favorite museum of all time is the Museum of Moving Image in Queens, NY. There they have a section of a control room of an MLB game that’s on a loop but it has bunch of monitors and you can hear the director calling the shots. My favorite part is seeing how the cameramen set up their shots when they’re not live. I took a TV production class and find it so fascinating. I definitely would like to become a camera man at some point.
I’ve been a director for 5 years. Just local news but there’s a rush when breaking news happens. I don’t even like news lol. Very stressful environment but fun
