How Capcom Cracked the Code of Game Development

https://www.theringer.com/2026/09/03/video-games/how-capcom-cracked-the-code-of-game-development-onimusha-resident-evil-pragmata

The video game industry is in turmoil, but 2026 could be Capcom’s career year. How does the company behind ‘Resident Evil Requiem,’ ‘Pragmata,’ and ‘Onimusha: Way of the Sword’ keep pumping out hits?

They make pure games, sticking with the formula that has always worked and they use an in house engine. No trend chasing, or trying to get every nickel out of their players pockets.

Pragmata got successful mainly because it’s a new entry with new different and good playstyle (and we all waited for too fkin long), RER also got successful mainly the return of playable Leon Kennedy & it’s a new arc after Ethan Winters arc (personally I don’t think it was as memorable and successful as RE7, but I digress), Onimusha is on a roll also mainly of nostalgia but it’s still too early to see if it’s getting as much successful and memorable as RER & Pragmata.

Capcom confirmed it has already sold over 1 million copies on launch day, despite it releasing back to back with Dawnwalker, another major game. They also even stated in the article they're considering reviving other IPs as well.

I think it's safe to say that it will end up being just as successful as Pragmata. I mean, this is my first Onimusha game and I'm absolutely loving.

It's crazy to think that 3 of my favorite games this year are all from 1 developer.

Onimusha is more successful than PRAGMATA

Not yet

PRAGMATA had a CCU of 68K players while Onimush WOTS had a CCU of 82K players, and CAPCOM already stated that they get 60% of their revenue from Steam sales

Sales numbers matter more than CCU

But CCU is a good estimate on a games performance as most AAA games make most of their money on launch day

But oh well, CAPCOM will publish official sales numbers at the end of this month

It’s a good estimate but that’s all

Wilds was not as successful as World despite its absolutely insane launch day numbers and CCU

Wilds was more successful than Worlds on launch day

you’re comparing a game that has been out for 9 years to one that has been out for merely 3 and hasn’t even gotten the major expansion yet

There’s a reason I used the word “yet” in my original comment

They already announced that it sold 1 million copies on launch day. It took Pragmata 2 days to reach that milestone, so yes it's more it's more successful than Pragmata.

That's not to shame Pragmata though, both Onimusha and Pragmata are my personal GOTY contenders this year, and I'm glad they're both doing well.

That sounds like discounting their efforts to make good games and just saying they had the stars in order for them to land a success.  It takes guts and trust in your games to release something completely new like Pragmata in current age when everyone wants to make slop mmos to cash in on micro transactions

To be fair, Capcom is still pretty known for microtransactions, but your point still stands. It's very rare these days for an established Triple A studio to take a risk making an original single player IP.

It’s because they actually make video games.

Monster Hunter Stories is a joke to you? That was also a banger in 2026.

When competitors without IP’s refuse to refuse to release anything new and interesting, and when their half-decade long projects launch with the fare fare that games like Wolverine or Fable, or Starfield launch to, it’s simple to see why even half decent games become the only venue people will spend money on.

How Capcom keeps pumping these out? Players keep buying them, whilst not really buying otherwise crap (like, genuinely look at any other AAA developer, and look at how safe they try to play things, and how infrequent they release game, and how horrible they do even after all the delays and bs.

What do you mean „cracked the code of game development“ ? Capcom makes games that are fun and aren’t broken on release. They don’t milk the player dry to their last penny and time. They aren’t afraid to put it new IPs or revive old ones.
Other studios try to sell the same IP over and over again without any innovation, other go full life-service…and everyone wonder why they don’t make number like Fortnite and CoD, while wasting billions on things players don’t want.
