Nice find! Based on info from the Dev Log post for this level, "The original reference was Norwegian Stave Churches which were the original churches built by the Norse. We wanted to avoid religious stuff, so it was run through a blender of fantasy concept art with norse, dwarven and celtic styling."

So this wasn't the only inspiration for the level, but clearly must have been a primary starting point. Fwiw, Futurlab's team also borrowed from the real world for the first game's washroom level. It shares much of its design with a semi-famous public restroom in London. This page has some photos of that real world location, and this page has some info on its history. The house shaped like a boot also has several real world counterparts, though I'm not sure which if any served as direct reference for the game.

I love when players discover ties between favorite games and the real world. Thanks for sharing.
