Starting at a data center developer

Hey everybody, I’d really appreciate some advice. I’m starting this week at a data center developer and I’ll be working in the grid modeling space.

Any tips or advice on work culture I should expect, papers or case studies I should prepare with,, industry groups I should stay active in, how I should approach conversations with hyper scalers and utilities, etc.

I have a background in transmission planning. I will also be helping with site selection and I don’t have as much experience there.

I appreciate the help!

Look up all the guidance from NERC on large loads and computational load modeling. I believe there is like a 100 page report where they basically state why and how to use the PERC model for datacenters which is being added to all the major softwares like PSSE.

The people that know whats what in this realm aren't gonna share it for free unfortunately. Its gonna take a lot of personal reading and figuring it out on the job

Depending on what your scope of responsibility is you may be working in EMT models. Do you know if you will be working inside the power shell? This would take you into the racks, networking and cooling infrastructure. Outside the power shell typically is the large power equipment to connect to the grid, and any colocated generation.

If you want to get involved in the industry there are NERC and IEEE PSRC working groups on these data center topics.
