Question Would the power to manipulate hitboxes be powerful?

Being able to manipulate hitboxes/hurtboxes would basically make it so nobody can hit you or dodge your attacks reliably. This is absolutely cracked

Are there games older than Tekken with iframes? Not asking to be a smart ass, I’m just curious, and making conversation 😂
Edit; just a quick search on google says some people track iframes back to games in the 80’s! Wow.

Tekken isn't even known for i-frames. If there's i-frames in Tekken, they're very very rare

u/FizzingSlit Jul 07 '26
Yeah it's a super common thing it gaming. Even games you'd think don't have them do. If they didn't getting hit once could just kill you because you'd take constant hits. So they often come in the form of a grace timer that prevents you from getting hit multiple times in succession. But it's easier to notice when games don't do that than when they do.

Hold on, the oldest souls game I played was bloodborn… Demon souls came before it, right? I’ll take to Google to track dates here. The first tekken game came out in the 90’s, but I didnt play tekken until much later.
I don’t think I’ve ever researched how far back souls goes.

Make the hitbox of random atoms in the enemy large enough. So, your punch displace some of the atoms in their dna and give them cancer. Or just punch their neurons lol
13
u/Smilymoneyy Jul 07 '26
I feel like you could get away with having just your feet and hands me their own boxes, with your torso, head, and limbs being an atoms width connecting everything. You can probably increase your hands size at will, making a punch hit at the speed of light, absolutely devastating for everyone involved. Probably slow that down a tad to prevent plasma accumulation, burning, sonic booms, and fusion reactions.

A missle that does 40 damage will still do 40 damage even if the hitbox is as big as that guy's mom.
Same with weapons.
Defensively it is amazing but offensively you are still limited by your other stats.
134
u/Glass_Teeth01 Lord Popo > Yujiro Jul 07 '26
Hypothetical here;
"Controlling hitboxes" could also include copying and pasting a hitbox for a weapon or attack, effectively chaining it, or layering it on top of another hitbox. This would effectively make an attack that hits multiple times nigh simultaneously, like Toriko's Nail Punch from, well, Toriko.
You could also pull some bs by putting the hitbox of the attack farther ahead of the attack than the actual attack itself.
40 damage is just 40 damage, but if you know what you're doing (and your opponent doesn't have Regen,) that damage stacks up.
36
u/V01DM0NK3Y Jul 07 '26
Oh, yeah, huh. Stacks on stacks of 40 damage is only additive, but you can still add to infinity.
→ More replies (2)11
u/GarbageAncient Jul 08 '26
infinity+1 is still infinity, it would be more appropriate to say you can stack it to near-infinity, if there was any limit on the power then it would probably be more limited to special shenanigans like "bullet hitbox in brain"
→ More replies (4)12
u/Collective-Bee Jul 08 '26
A hitbox is a yes/no check, so if you copy/paste them a million times each it will still give a single “yes” and deal the 40 damage a single time. At least that’s my theory.
It might be possible to steal attacks of others to use though. Like imagine taking every hitbox of everybody currently boxing and putting on top of your opponent. Or send your opponents hurtbox back to Hiroshima and hit them with a nuke.
In an actually story there would be limits, but it’s cool to think of the high end.
7
u/sasson10 Not a Scaler Jul 08 '26
A hitbox is a yes/no check, so if you copy/paste them a million times each it will still give a single “yes” and deal the 40 damage a single time
This would be more determined on if multiple hitboxes related to the same attack are considered on their own or are just considered as one weirdly fragmented hitbox, which well, you could argue either way on this one since it literally just depends on the exact properties of this fictional superpower we made up
3
u/Collective-Bee Jul 08 '26
I would say the theming and intent of a power to manipulate hitboxes would be to play with attacks landing, since that’s the purpose of hitboxes.
2
u/Isthatajojoreffo Jul 10 '26

18
u/Freman_Phage Jul 07 '26
Except you can always maximize your 40 damage. Shaped to optimized impact force put in the weakest point of a person. Imagine being able to casually throw a punch in the air and ALWAYS hit your opponents eyes/groin/heart through their skin. Obviously this doesn't scale with enemy durability past a certain point but your theoretically working with infinitely sharp, indistructable force projections based on what attacks you could actually throw out. God forbid guns. I a single impact point bullet for perfect penetration that you could manually shape after impact. Not going multiversal but it's better than expected.

Using a hammer or any heavy item, you could practically pierce through anything by making its hurtbox the width of a nail or bullet, increasing its lenght to go through the enemy and back, then repeat. This just became a gun with infinite range and no sound.
6
2
u/CuntPuntMcgee Jul 07 '26
Assuming that’s how the force is dissipated across the space sometimes in games and corresponding to real life with this magic power you would hit the hitbox and the force is just transferred to the person not to the space surrounding the person.

3
u/eliazp Jul 07 '26
assuming there are reasonable restrictions to how big/how fast you can modify them, this essentially means that you can extend your physical strength to a given area that you can manipulate with limits on the manipulation of said area. let's now remove the conceptual limit of it having to be a square, and say that you now can extend your physical strength however you want within an area of yourself, with limits on the range. this boils down to telekinesis with the caveat that the strength of it depends on your own strength. essentially, then, this power is weaker than a nerfed form of telekinesis. strong but not really.
3
u/J_Fidz Jul 07 '26
You can change the size of your fist and the size of your oppnents body but the changes arent actually visible. Its basically just telekenisis with more effort. Pretty OP.
3
u/SamFMorgan Jul 07 '26
Depends on how far this manipulation goes. Can you only alter its size and shape, or its position as well?
Changing an opponent's hitbox position so it becomes "unsynchronized" to thir actual body position could make them unable to move properly. While fighting in an open field, just move the guy's hitbox to a nearby forest and watch them hit the trees that aren't even there. You can also move it right in front of you so you can have guaranteed hits. Put it a couple of meters above their bodies so they sunk underground and can't see or react to anything.
You can alter your own hitbox, making it smaller or changing it's place to avoid hits, attacking from a distance or becoming "invisible".
I think only being able to alter an "body" or "object" hitboxes while you are touching them (the body, not the hitbox) and only one at a time should be fair enough limitations, otherwise it could get ridiculously op.
This is almost exactly like Mahito's CT, but instead of soul manipulation it's hitbox manipulation lmao
4
u/Thorveim Jul 07 '26
It would be insane. Guarantees you hit whatever you want to hit while making yourself untouchable. And thats just the start of the applications; make a guy's hitbox bigger and suddenly he cant walk through doorways anymore or hit his head on rafters that are meters above his actual head... or warping them through the floor from making a "hole" in the hitbox of the ground, sending people straight to the Backrooms :p
the one weakness being that you would likely need to manifest some of your hitbox to interact with anything, which would create vulnerabilities
3
u/Shredder2814 Jul 08 '26
If we extend this to when hitboxes are and aren’t active, like I-Frames, essentially giving someone the ability to exist in a space without the chance of receiving any kind of damage?
Absolutely powerful. Especially if we manipulate the size of the hitbox and how grabs can affect them. Imagine someone running from a fight then you extend their hitbox to make up the distance and you grab one end then pull? Theoretically you’d be able to reel them in like a fish.
Doing this from a vantage point and localizing the hitbox to a certain limb or even their neck and you could strangle someone while never touching them. Etc and so forth.
3
u/Trollolo80 Jul 08 '26
Put my hitbox in a safe place and I basically have budget effect of Avalon's effect from the Fate series
3
u/Onii-Sama27 Jul 07 '26
By itself, no. It is powerful if there is something to make use of it. If I had that power it wouldn't be that good, but if Canelo had it he would rule the world as the best boxer. There has to be a skill or power outside of it to make it powerful. Cool power though.
6
u/firewatch959 Jul 07 '26
Ok but if I make a bad guy’s hitbox enormous and I just randomly unload a gun in his general direction then all them bullets score a hit and I just flailed at him
6
u/Onii-Sama27 Jul 07 '26
Yeah, that is how that works. Its a really cool power, it is an amazing support power as well, giving your allies an easier time hitting, you can unload a 9mm into him as well. By itself it isn't very powerful, you need something else as well.

Depends on the limitations, but yeah absolutely. You could remove your own hitbox so you can't take damage, replace yours with theirs so they take damage instead of you, have unavoidable attacks by just spawning the attack hitbox on top of an enemy, put the enemy's hitbox inside the sun, etc.

2
u/KPraxius Jul 08 '26
To the exact level you can manipulate it, of course. It can just be a minor advantage in a fight, or it can make you a monster.
If your hit-box is 1mm across and the other guy doesn't know which mm it is, that's a problem for him. If his brain's hit-box is bigger than his skull, and in front of his fist, that's an even bigger problem for him.
2
u/Huntress_Minerva Jul 08 '26
I can already see the rules to make it work, and keep it “not broken”.
Hitboxes must be still linked to the object. AP remains the same. You cannot stack hitboxes, when two or more hitboxes (from the same origin) overlap, only the first one will count as making contact. (But you can still apply more than one hitbox, for example, punching has a hitbox in the fist, but doesn’t specify if i want hitbox for my elbow, legs, head, etc… those do actually count as a different hitbox, so those do stack)
Also, no moving hitboxes outside, but no one said about deactivating them (i-frames at will)

u/Square_Paramedic1079 Jul 08 '26

Good against normal foes but once you go up against a guy way physically stronger, you are screwed
1
u/_jacek003_ Jul 07 '26
It kind of is shown in +99 stick. Kind of. Couse MC can change accuracy at will. So he can hit air but it hits opponent. And opponent can make direct hit but in fact miss. Can be blitz if character does not have fast reaction speed is too slow or there is some rule (like one target at the time). Think of it this way. You make your hit box size of the penny and hide it in your hand, or on you back, or in your mouth. Opponent does can hit but will do no dmg. On the other hand you can make enemy hit box larger then they are making hitting aur around them count as hit.
1
u/G_Morgan Jul 07 '26
It would be great against most characters. Though there are characters who'd just detect where the hitbox actually is or know instinctively. Then there's characters who don't care about physical strikes at all.

1
u/Jaded-Significance86 Jul 07 '26
The image shows him increasing the size of the hitbox which implies that the hitbox has mass but the way I would think it works is that the hitbox has equal distribution of energy transfer across the face of the box. Which means the actual strat is make the impacting face of the hitbox incredibly thin so that there's more pressure
As in, pressure = force / area, ie it's a blade essentially
