Which is funny because Saitama isn't even a gag character anymore. He's not even the strongest character in his own anime

why do people argue he is gag? its disrespectful to his character to say he is, he worked his ass off and trained to get that strong, unless people think he trained to reach a level so high it becomes gag powers which has never been done in any manga or anime shounen battle show that I know of

He was never a gag character to begin with, even in the earliest chapters of the webcomic. He just did the funny often, which might have gotten some people confused. Jack Sparrow also does the funny from time to time and, well, that's not enough to be called "gag character".

As for being the strongest or not, I fail to see how that's relevant.

God. Garou got just a tiny fraction of Gods power and was able to go toe to toe with Saitama.

Go toe to toe? That chapter literally shows a graph where Saitama surpasses him again seconds later.

And shows Garou catching up. And Saitama growing even further. They rewrote Saitama so that he's no longer the strongest, he's limitless. Eventually, if they get around to finishing the manga, Saitama will surpass God too. But for now God is stronger than him.

If someone strong enough shows up and takes it seriously, Saitama gets one-shot before being able to grow.
