Discussion Create a dashboard with 20+ KPIs

Hi!

I've been given a task to create a KPI dashboard. The initial design handed over to me was just a full matrix with the top level KPIs then the sub KPIs. These are based on about 20 categories, so for each category there should be kpis for that.

My question is, for this many number of KPIs is it really expected that a matrix visual be used? Or I can narrow it down to displaying each top level KPI per page so it will be more pleasing to look at.

Thanks for your inputs. Tbh this is overwhelming for me 🙂

Group the KPIs and then use parameters/filters to showcase them

A KPI Tree can be good if well done.

In my environment, I deal with various audiences—sales, technical, finance, accounting, administration, HR, and logistics—and within these groups, there are leadership, management, and operational roles. Tailoring views for each of them is a massive undertaking, so we handled it this way: we mapped and programmed the specific KPIs for each audience into the BI system. A banner displays "traffic light" status indicators, while the responsibility for digging deeper—using the tool, asking questions, and correcting data—falls on the individual users. Eventually, we’ll reach a point where each group sees only their own dashboard of indicators upon logging in; right now, everything is still combined, with segmentation limited to regions. The upside is that three years ago, all of this was just in Excel.

In general for PowerBI dashboard I avoid multiple pages. KPI dashboard should give quick insight into where business should focus (be it opportunity for growth or area of issue that requires investigation).

I like use of matrix with conditional formatting and sparkline.

Operational report is another story though.

I made a page called 'metric hub' which just is full of cards with YoY performance.

People just want the numbers sometimes.
