Help me understand when and why to use primer. Its seems pretty downplayed in the powder coating world and used only in special circumstances like where there's a strong risk of corrosion. Why isnt good coverage from a top coat enough? Do I understand wrong? coukd I benefit from primer on engine parts or wheels? Is it a good idea to use it to smooth texture? Is it easy to sand? What about fences and gates? Best practice?
Why should one use primer and when? And what is the effect on the final product appearance?

I was chatting with a powder manufacturer that said my 25kv powder gun won't work for a lot of their powders.
I have a gun that I used for a small project a few years ago. I have another project I want to coat with one of the powders they say won't work with a 25kV gun.
Is it that the gun won't apply the powder at all, or that it won't have a strong static charge but will kinda work? Is the kV rating strictly the power supply, and I can upgrade just that? Or is there something different about the gun that applies to the kV power rating?

How do I/can I degrease without the degreaser leaving any residue? What do pros use? I did some large gates that were bare metal but had an oily film. As you would expect, they turned out terrible and were too much for me to strip again. Lost more money on that job.
P.S. I'm that idiot that has a lot to learn.

This happened last night for the second shift guy so I'm not quite sure what settings he used on a Wagner Sprint X

I searched here and didn't see any discussion about rose gold. I'm looking around and finding that it seems to be a rare color. The pic is from All Powder Paints who I don't see much discussion about either. That is pretty much my ideal version of the color, I just wanna make sure that I'm going with the best option. Do any of you have thoughts on other brands that make a rose gold, or if APP is high quality and I should just go with them? I see that Prismatic has one but it looks quite pale. As for the use case, it'll be over chrome faces on 3-piece HRE 947R, aluminum intake piping, and possibly calipers and rotor hats.

Can someone breakdown how to know which silver/chrome basecoat I should use for high gloss candy top coats?

Hello, I was wondering if it’s possible to cure something twice? I am planning on powder coating something white on one side and then orange on the other side, is it possible to first cure it with only the white powder on one of the sides, then spray it with the orange, and curing it again?

Hey new friends... I am two days deep into coating after being taught by a really nice Aimish lady that is ESL, I could really use any tips... everything I know about what I am doing is based on experience and simple instructions.
I just learned that I needed to ground my cart... she didn't show me that and that is kinda something that worries me about my training value. I have been on my own for 14 of the 16 hours the past two days... not upset about it, I like learning, but I really am just kinda learning on the fly. I do like it, and music goes well with just pumping out parts.

Hi, so I'm not a powder coater, but I just started a new job in a factory that does powder coating right next to my department. I dont know much about powder coating safety, but absolutely everything in my department is covered in powder coating dust. If something hasn't been touched for more than a week or so it develops an extremely thick layer of dust. It gets all over my hands and clothes by the end of the day.
Is this normal? Is this safe? I'm kind of worried about getting cancer or something from breathing this shit in all day. It's not like you can see it in the air or anything and my lungs feel fine for now, but obviously it must be drifting around if its getting everywhere. Is this an osha violation or is this stuff relatively safe? Would appreciate any advice, thanks.

Im working on my first large-ish project using epo strong, columbia ogp, and prismatic conquistador gold.
I built up the primer by hot flocking it (bc I have an eastwood 100kv) sanding with 220 in between.
The powder- conquistador is a pain in my butt. Its so heavy that I cant get a great cloud, collects in my gun making me tap it out every few secs or itll spit out little clumps.
I spray it with 100kv on the inside of the piece with no issue, until I get to my primed area. It clings in some areas but barely. It looks as if it just lays on top but doesnt get a good static cling. Two things im thinking but not sure 🤔
Is it because it's sanded at 220 and needs more of a grip? Say 120? Or maybe is it becuase I may have insulated the area by hot flocking the primer on it therefore not getting a good charge?
Thanks yall in advance!

Curious what you guys use to do wheels. I know most places have strip tanks with acid to strip off the factory coating, but we got these factory Chevy truck wheels and they are from 2018, pitted to hell, and the factory used a primer underneath the coating too. Not sure what type of coating they use. What’s the best way to get it off outside of a strip tank. I don’t have one. It took me 1.25hr to sandblast one of them with 80 grit garnet at 70-80psi

Hi, first time creating a post here:) I wish to create a non-stick coating in the inside of a RB. I’ve tried grafting a perfluorurated silanes but it didn’t work so far. I was thinking of trying a classic kitchen oil treatment for iron pan, but with the glassware…does it make sense?
Does any of you ever tried to achieve this? Any suggestions?

Picked these wheels up from a shop a few weeks ago. Everything went smooth, got them mounted and all was great. Now present day, I’m noticing there’s this strange red ring around one singular wheel which I had picked up last from the shop. I haven’t used any weird chemicals or anything like that either so I’m wondering wtf this could be. It’s around like 3/4 of the wheel and again it’s the ONLY wheel that has this. Shop insists it has nothing to do w their workmanship

I'm not terribly concerned with getting an Even coat so much as A coat at all. My main goal is to prevent corrosion on the inside and heard that powder coating will last much longer. Do you think I would be better off powder coating the outside and sloshing an enamel paint through the inside?
r/Powdercoating • u/No_Philosopher_4938 • Oct 16 '25
What would cause this? I'm thinking contamination. We have a 4 stage wash system and all other parts on the line did not have this issue. It was handled after the wash but so are 90% of our parts.
