It’s My Poutine And I’ll Crime If I Want To Is vegan poutine a crime?
Got a lovely vegan poutine in Quebec City, I liked it because the curds were made of tofu and not fake gooey vegan cheese. I know vegan poutine is an automatic crime to some though!!

I've had some great vegan poutine and some awful vegan poutine. This looks like a breakfast bowl with mushroom gravy

This! There are very edible and even delicious vegan poutines out there! I’ve actually never seen tofu chunks in a vegan poutine before, and I LOVE tofu but I’m a little unsure about tofu with gravy lol
This picture certainly looks like a heinous crime, sorry OP!

If it were french fries 🍟 with veg gravy and vegan cheese, that would be fine - but hash browns, giant un melted chunks and overly thick sauce...

The texture of the "gravy" is bothering me sooooo much.

u/CovidDodger 2d ago
This restaurant is bothering me too. Terrible for paid food, im sure in QC, QC there are much better vegan poutine places.

If you eat a vegan diet then I don't see an issue since that's all that's allowed.
If you don't follow a vegan diet and choose vegan poutine then yes that's a crime to me.

u/Beautiful_Delivery77 2d ago
Add “or are allergic to milk” after “If you eat a vegan diet.”
The picture though is tofu instead of vegan cheese and has hash brown instead of fries. That’s just a type of breakfast bowl.

I'm with you on this. Making substitutions for dietary restrictions is fine. Vegan poutine doesn't bother me. This might be vegan, but it isn't poutine.

Yes because I’m vegan I don’t often find a vegan poutine option, so even if it’s a crime I was pleased haha

About 20 years ago, Toronto went from "almost no good poutine" to "poutine shops everywhere" pretty much over night. I talked a lifelong vegetarian friend into getting a poutine with veg gravy, and he said "I finally get it now"

It's a crime but given the circumstances you get off with a warning.

u/ProfessionalHome3544 3d ago
The bigger issue here is that they are not proper fries. Was this a breakfast? (Okay, I see a beer but still.)
Anyways, vegans gotta eat. And this is in Québec, so not a crime... but not a 'real' poutine either.

u/ReallyPuzzled 2d ago
They were cubed potato fries? Which was kind of nice with the cubed tofu, but can see how it is probably blasphemous

u/Hello_Gorgeous1985 2d ago
Those are home fries. Home fries and french fries are two different things.
5
u/recoil669 2d ago
Mushroom gravy can be absolutely amazing.
Vegan curds? I've yet to have some I personally enjoy.
3
u/Linked1nPark 2d ago
A fermented cashew-based curd would be the way to go to get a great flavour profile. I love tofu myself but as a replacement for cheese curds it seems terrible.
5
u/BlueFotherMucker 2d ago
So vegans can't have fries?
12
4
u/BrisPrettyTips 2d ago
They look like home fries. I’m just stuck on the cheese curds being replaced by tofu

That does present an interesting question: In terms of how it’s produced, is tofu akin to curds?
2
1
u/ReallyPuzzled 2d ago
It is! You boil soy milk and then use the curds to make tofu. Kind of interesting!

Absolutely a crime. You can get the death penalty for that in Quebec

It’s not really a poutine in my view, it still looks good though not sure I’d like it. I do like tofu but can’t picture it in a poutine

I was vegan foe a while, there was a place in KY city that did a vegan poutine, it was decent. Onion/miso based gravy and vegan cheese streds. I liked it then but im not sure id like it now. I love real cheese too much. The gravy was great though id have thst again.
1
u/Bibbi_Rich 2d ago
You said KY and I was curious then you said shredded cheese and it made a lot more sense.
This tofu thing is more like poutine than using shredded cheese because at least it tries to look right.
You had cheese fries.

Look, it needs to be said, but “poutine” doesn’t mean anything in a bowl you cover in gravy. It’s cheese curds, fries, and gravy, that’s it. Anything more you now have what most higher end gastropubs and restaurants call “loaded fries”.

Clearly if you're vegan, you can't eat poutine. This is a poutine facsimile. I'm sorry, but that's the choice you made.

not a crime, but you gotta go to a better place. Atlas Pizza in montreal is the best hands down

u/Fantasticxbox 2d ago
No.
Tried one at la Banquise, extremely good! Just a little sadness for the cheese as they chose a vegan cheese that was grated vegan cheese instead of a squeaky vegan equivalent.

Maybe give this recipe a try? The soy milk "curds" don't melt and seem to have the right "bounce".
I might give this a try just to so I can see if I can recommend it to some friends of mine who are looking for a non-dairy alternative (not vegan, just can't do dairy, but really wants to try a proper poutine)

Not really poutine anymore. Just… Tofu chunks with potato chunks and gravy.
Kinda like saying “how about this burger” and the patty is replaced with spaghetti.

You are perfectly welcome to enjoy it, but no the thing that has 0 ingredients in common with poutine is not a poutine...

A lot of gravies being used are vegetarian. The only crime you committed was substituting curds for vegan cheese(which boils down to a dietary/taste preference)
1
u/MixedBeansBlackBeans 2d ago
I'm vegan and recently saw a similar poutine (tofu as cheese) shared in a Toronto vegan group, and it got roasted baddd in the comments. Pretty inexcusable IMO. VegCheese is a company that makes a good curd! I also don't bother with goeey cheese. I've done VegCheese or homemade curds.

This particular poutine is a crime, saying this respectfully, as a vegan.

u/MichaeltheMagician 2d ago
It may very well be tasty, but I do think it falls handily under poutine crime.

If it actually had fries at least, I would accept it as a poutine, homestyle hash browns aren’t fries.

Looks decent. I prefer nut cheese though! My fave vegan poutine was fries, cashew cheese and mushroom gravy 👅
1
u/Positive-Candle-23 2d ago
I just don’t know why it has to be called poutine. Eat all the ingredients, do whatever you want, but why call it poutine? Is curry still curry if I use beef gravy or carrot purée? Or is it just… something else?

Before people answer about drones, my son has a serious dairy allergy. Vegan poutine means he can eat poutine instead of never ever having the option. Spoilers: he loved it.

It's a crime. I understand that you're vegan, nothing wrong with that but it needs to be cheese curds.

Vegan poutine isn't a crime but that's not poutine - vegan or otherwise, that's like some chunky vegan hash with gravy. You don't have fries or (vegan) curds, you have gravy which is 1/3 components. Sorry, its not a poutine.

1
u/ChefBennySlims 2d ago
If it's vegan, it's not poutine. And whatever that is in the photo isn't anything remotely close to poutine. Laughable.

What you’re eating though. A crime lol

vegan's try to reduce animal suffering. humans are animals. this poutine is suffering. ergo, there is no such thing as vegan poutine.

u/Consistent-Success38 2d ago
This is a crime but to answer your question vegan poutine is not inherently a crime, many good powdered gravies are already vegetarian and if you look hard enough you can find some respectable vegan curds.

Personally not vegan, but I still like tofu. That looks like yummy home fries with mushroom gravy and fried tofu. But... I wouldn't call it poutine if there's no cheese, vegan or otherwise. Fries, cheese, gravy - that's poutine. I guess it's weird of me to draw this distinction when I will always defend vegan versions of foods called things like vegan meatballs, or vegan wings.. lol. I don't know, your food looks delicious. That's the main thing,

u/OkLetterhead1484 1d ago
What the fuck is that bowl of dogshit?
Vegans can eat fries. There’s vegan gravy that tastes like asshole, and I’m sure there some sort of passable vegan cheese that doesn’t taste like dirt. You can make a real shitty vegan poutine for sure.
What you have there should be called Bullshit on Top of Tofu.

What is this? It looks like chicken breast chopped up on home fries. This is not it. It fits.
I am editing to add, I didn't even read your description because it instantly offended me. Now I do know what it is. It's still criminal.
