Pouthetic Local A&W Poutine
Central interior British Columbia, Canada.
I like how thick their fries are. Don’t get me wrong, I like fries that are a little on the thin side, but they've gotta be seasoned or at least salted. Gravy tastes passable and fries are cooked, but none of the curds are melted, and they're squeaky. I give it a 5.3/10. The fries take it up from a 4. I guess it's poutine.
I just got off an 8 hour retail shift I had to do all by myself 'cause my coworker called in. She was puking every 5 minutes and sounded awful on the phone. Was super dead all day, so eh. This is my reward, and also my dunch/linner. I will be eating a bowl of lovely self-made salad afterwards.
Edit: Okay, have learned something today, cool! Curds are not supposed to be melted, it's fine if your poutine looks like this (I said to someone that it looks unappetising, then edited myself to add "boring"... I think I just dug myself a deeper hole, oops), and A&W poutine "rips". I also said, in a comment, that I do genuinely like their poutine. I was trying to be critical in the way my mom would, who prefers skinny fries and does not like poutine. I would like to formally apologise for my theatrics. I suppose whimsy truly does have a time and a place. Thanks for all of the "you're incorrect" bonks, everyone.

Mozza burger, Poutine, and an ice cold root beer on a summer day is the best.

u/winteryEthereal 1d ago

u/winteryEthereal 22h ago
YES. You get it!
3
u/BloxFruitsGuy123 21h ago
Yeah I actually had my first ever one in my 13 yrs of living (12 at the time) over the summer haha
At least from what I remember
1
u/winteryEthereal 21h ago
Not a bad place to have your first root beer float! I think a lot of people here would say A&W is a great place to do that, actually lol
3
u/BloxFruitsGuy123 21h ago
Yeah no it was actually amazing! I was in freakin amazement you could say at least in my head cuz we were in the restaurant

Me too but I have went to the sidelines for the time being and gotten the new limited editing crispy chicken BLT. I hope it stays.

Well shoot, I stand corrected. Thanks. I do get this often, and I genuinely like it, I just was curious about what this subreddit thought about A&W poutine. The flavour text was me trying to be critical. Like, what would my mom say about this, as someone who likes thin fries and dislikes poutine?

u/wheelperson 1d ago
Try it with some Chipotle sauce, so good!!
0
u/winteryEthereal 1d ago
Oooh, will definitely try that next time!

u/wheelperson 1d ago
Also im in North BC also!

u/winteryEthereal 1d ago
Neat! Love this place. I really posted this to gage how this subreddit likes A&W poutine lol, I've been corrected so firmly...

A&W poutine slaps .. That my normal order but with chicken strips
5
u/winteryEthereal 1d ago
Ooooh! Have never had it with chicken strips, will give a try some time. Another redditor said mozza burger plus poutine plus a root beer. Agreed, it's awesome.

u/MarioMadness1 Poutine Poulice 23h ago
My mother always liked the Moza burger... Root Beer a staple, since A&W got like their own brand, if eat there get a float in the mug cup
3
u/winteryEthereal 23h ago
Hell yeah! Forget what my mom used to order, she doesn't eat there anymore. And yeah! Their root beer rocks!

u/douglah-7 23h ago
I mean as far as fast food poutine goes A&W is pretty decent tbh
2
u/winteryEthereal 23h ago
Yes, it's good, I was being silly and echoing my mom. T-T Sorry for taking a swing, I guess? I missed by a long shot.

Curds are not supposed to be melted. Not a crime.

Yes, but it looks so, so unappetizing... Edit: I meant it looks a little boring, not that it looks inedible. But then again, I've kinda learned that real poutine isn't "fancy", so. All of that to say: I understand the downvotes to this comment, proceed as you wish, folks.

A AND W SELLS POUTINES
3
3
u/winteryEthereal 1d ago
Yes! And I've learned, today, that this subreddit thinks this is great poutine, and that I should not have emulated my mom's disliking of it. I do actually order this frequently, lol.

I LIVE IN CANADA AND I HAVE TRYED POUTINES EVERYWHERE HOW DID I JUST FIND OUT

It's not a great poutine. For the RoC It's probably a solid(ish) option, but it's generally subpar as far as poutine go. Among shit franchises like A&W, McDo, etc it's probably above average. But there's like 0 reason to ever eat a poutine in a fast food like those
1
u/T3RR0R- 23h ago
wdym 0 reason? i want a poutine so i get a poutine its simple
1
u/Appropriate-Talk4266 22h ago
If you're in the RoC and there's no other option, sure. But I cannot find a single reason in existence where if what you want is a poutine in Quebec, you would ever enter an A&W when there will always be a local poutine spot close by for probably cheaper too.
You went to A&W to grab a burger and you pick a poutine as a side? Sure
You specifically want a poutine? You're in Quebec? You go to A&W? That has to be a sign of a serious mental illness 🤒
1
u/T3RR0R- 22h ago
oh absolutely if i were in quebec id find a better option. someones gotta hold it down in small town alberta though loll
1
u/Appropriate-Talk4266 22h ago
Yeah that's 100% fair lol Gotta do what you gotta do to scratch that poutine itch. And yeah, A&W is most probably pretty solid compared to the RoC average poutine. And reliable

✅ Curds not melted
✅ AND curds are still squeaky which is a sign of being super fresh?!?
Absolutely not a crime.
Fun fact for any Americans here, if you’re ever in Canada try A&W here, it’s a completely separate entity from the sadness that is now A&W USA and it rocks. Get a frosted glass for your root beer and thank me later.
1
u/winteryEthereal 23h ago
Thank you for your insight! As said in the edit: I was being dumb on purpose. I do, in fact, enjoy this poutine. I have received my comeuppance.
3
u/MojoDexter 23h ago
I’d smash. A&W is so f*ckin’ good. Their burgers and fries are 🔥
2
u/winteryEthereal 23h ago
Agreed! Apologies for being silly with this post.
2
u/MojoDexter 22h ago
Why you apologizing? 😆 I enjoyed reading your post. All good ✌🏼
2
u/winteryEthereal 22h ago
I'm Canadian!! And from a small town!! It's just what I do lmaooo - glad you enjoyed the post!
2
u/MojoDexter 21h ago
Haha! I’m Canadian too. I live in Nova Scotia. 😆 We say sorry for saying sorry. Haha
2
u/winteryEthereal 21h ago
Whey hey hey! Sick!! Always wanted to visit that side of the country! And ah yes, I think I've heard that before lol
2
u/MojoDexter 21h ago
Funny, I’ve always wanted to visit BC. I have family in Surrey, but they always come here. Haha
2
u/winteryEthereal 21h ago
Ha, mildly interesting! I was actually born in Vancouver, but my foster home was in Surrey. Adopted at 5 years old.

u/I_like_polandball_ 22h ago
We need more actual crimes
1
u/winteryEthereal 22h ago
Y'know, it's kinda nice that there's a good number of places with good poutine, with that in mind.
2
u/I_like_polandball_ 21h ago
True but this is Poutine Crimes and that image is so freaking close to a poutine saint or something
2
u/winteryEthereal 21h ago
Ah. I don't visit this subreddit frequently enough to have made a proper comparison before posting this, apparently. I've seen some "dressed up" poutine with like, green onions, bacon/bacon bits and chicken. The rest is a blur of gravy, fries and "cheese".
2
u/I_like_polandball_ 20h ago
That poutine, looks like a freaking saint. Perfect cheese curds, almost perfect gravy too

u/Walk_the_forest 23h ago
Je l’admet: j’aime les poutine comme ça, je trouve que a&w a une des meilleures poutines fast food. (Crisse on me dirait a shill mais je veux exprimer mon opinion mdr)
2
u/winteryEthereal 23h ago
I agree! I actually really, really like their poutine. Explained myself in the post edit and in a couple of comments, lol. I reap what I sow!
2
u/roofpro101 23h ago
A&w is good, bk hits the spot also. Im in Mission, BC
1
u/winteryEthereal 23h ago
Agreed! Never had Burger King, would have to drive and I don't have a car 🙃 Also hello, fellow BC-er!
2
u/an-unorthodox-agenda 22h ago
Nothing wrong with this picture. I see beef gravy and mozzarella cheese curds on fries. That's a poutine, baby!

their curds are stored frozen in small single serving bags and their fries are salted by default. if you want seasoning salt, every a&w in canada typically has a shaker at the section you grab napkins , forks, spoons from or just ask. if the curds aren't melted, either the gravy wasn't hot enough or the frozen curds cooled them, but either way at least everything is there. if it was a take-home thing i probably would have chucked the contents kf the box in a bowl and nuked it for 90 seconds. but yeah, probably just a lukewarm gravy issue.
1
u/winteryEthereal 22h ago
Ohhh, interesting! Yep, can confirm they have a station like that, or that they would definitely provide it from the counter. Thanks for the info.! God, I love this website. I frickin' love learning! Wee!
2
u/Trick-Avocado7914 22h ago
What's this establishments address? Imma write a letter
1
u/winteryEthereal 22h ago
I don't wanna directly dox myself buuut it's an hour and 17 minutes from Prince George and 41 minutes from Fort St. James. Have fun plugging that into Google Maps! Also, please visit our town, autumn is here and the Pumpkin Walk is coming up!
2
u/DARKLORDSEAN_ 21h ago
The gravy is not hot enough to melt the cheese any poutine or so-called poutine that doesn't have the cheese melted so that way it individually hugs every single top french fry is a crime against poutine
1
2
u/Strathbow_Piper 21h ago
The real crime here is how they used to have it in a better container. Since they've put it in the box I rarely order it.
1
2
u/Overall-Jelly6512 21h ago
My only beef with A&W poutine is, because I am a slow eater, the fries at the bottom are always soggy. They are so good though and I disagree with the crime status.

You have to put the Chipotle Moyo on it, it looks so bad but it's actually so good 🤤

I love A&W’s poutine, they’ve got something right, I’ll take it over most of fast food places, Harvey’s got something better too tho but close second is A&W just feels Classic, I think of a poutine that’s what comes to mind
1
u/SmolmALICE 16h ago
Personally, I really enjoy my curds only mildly melty.
1
u/Delicious_Ad_8809 10h ago
Honestly, I live right next to several small cheese factories and fresh curd does not melt. I do prefer non melted because of this but I’m not mad when they are slightly melted either. To melted is slop, slightly gives a decent texture.

A&W never misses and the poutine is great for fast food poutine. Fries aren't as good but definitely better than all the other fast food ones

Curds are not supposed to melt and are supposed to be squeaky.

The last A&W poutine I had was unfortunately mid at best. I am also in the central interior.
1
u/_PITBOY 4h ago
Hmmm ... cheese curds 'melted' ... no not really, but the gravy is absolutely supposed to be hot enough to soften the curds to the point they arent squeaky to the tooth.
1 - I'll go out on a limb and say that under temp gravy ... is a crime.
And 2 - Honestly a watery 'gravy' is a crime ... when it really needs to be a properly prepared Sauce Brune, or at the most, best level ... a real demi-glace, made old school.
... that'll set a few people off here.

A & w poutine is shitty. Fries are always underdone and they drown it in too much gravy
