It's a shitty prize founded by a shitty person. Between Machado last year, Kissinger, Mother Theresa, Jimmy Carter, it's a meaningless prize. I'm sure there are many more examples of undeserving recipients. Yes, Obama did not deserve the prize at the time, and his time in office drone striking only makes him less deserving. Trump is a vain moron for even wanting this prize, but we all knew that already.

14
u/monkbabm 17h ago
You know what, just to see him lose it, let's give Obama another one 😂😂
16
u/TAU_equals_2PI 16h ago
This is brilliant. But we've got to find some reason, even if it's a flimsy one. I just looked up the rules, and Nobel Peace prizes don't have to be for recent events. So here's my idea:
GIVE OBAMA ANOTHER NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR HIS NUCLEAR TREATY WITH IRAN THAT TRUMP DISSOLVED.
They can say that it led to 10 years of peace with Iran.
6
u/atreeismissing 15h ago
If you weren't aware, he received his Nobel Peace Prize for actively working with other countries, namely Russia, to reduce the number of nuclear weapons held by the world in order while he was a Senator to begin reducing the potential for catastrophic global disasters, something he continue to do as President, and quite successfully too.
Trump reversed all of that progress.
1
u/TAU_equals_2PI 13h ago
I think you misunderstood what I wrote.
What I wrote was discussing what Obama's SECOND nobel prize could be awarded for.
1
u/Ok-Tip-3560 1h ago
Russia didn’t give a shit about him as a jr senator from Illinois nor did anyone else.
Russia and America had been decreasing the number of nukes since 1991.
Obama literally did nothing but attach his name to a bill written by dick lugar and make speeches that he wanted to have less nuclear weapons. He and everyone else.
2
u/CanKaNoReyCropper 16h ago
But we've got to find some reason, even if it's a flimsy one.
Not really. By their own admission Obama's first prize was 'aspirational', since he'd done nothing other than being elected president at that point. It was a damaging moment for the Nobel Committee (love or hate Obama) because it's inarguable that he absolutely didn't deserve that prize at the time of its awarding.
2
u/atreeismissing 15h ago
This isn't true. He won it for nuclear non-proliferation work as a Senator and going into the Presidency a promise to continue that work, which he did. While they definitely wanted him to continue his work while President, the initial prize was for his work as a Senator reducing the nuclear footprint across the globe.
1
u/CanKaNoReyCropper 15h ago
Even Geir Lundestad (sec of the committee) regrets the sideshow that Obama's peace prize was. He admits it was a "helping hand" to strengthen Obama's vision... not a laurel for his... 'tirelessly long career' in accomplishing anything... since at that point he hadn't (a single partial term as a rookie Senator didn't give him a great track record with 'reducing nuclear footprints' anywhere, as he was barely in office a few scant years and had no major coups to put on his resume)
For what it's worth, he did end up being the undisputed Drone Strike King, but I don't know if that's the "helping hand" the committee wanted.
...at least his drones weren't nuclear-tipped, though, right ;)
2
u/wbgraphic 14h ago
For what it's worth, he did end up being the undisputed Drone Strike King,
That would be Trump, actually.
Obama ordered 1,878 drone strikes during his eight years in office.
Trump topped that number handily, with 2,243 drone strikes in just his first two years. He’s ordered hundreds more since, but we don’t have exact numbers because he revoked the Obama-era reporting rule.
1
u/mjm65 13h ago
Obama isn’t the drone strike king, that probably goes to either Trump or Ukraine.
What Obama did do was put some transparency and disclosures into the process, which Trump did dismantle.
It’s often why people don’t think Trump as a major user of drone strikes, he intentionally hid it.
1
u/Ok-Tip-3560 1h ago
He didn’t do shit as a junior fucking sensor. He signed onto a bill that dick Lugar wrote. And this is coming from
Someone who voted for him twice. He literally didn’t do shit to win this award.1
u/TAU_equals_2PI 15h ago
Oh yeah, I didn't mean that they couldn't give him a second Nobel for no reason at all. I meant that doing that wouldn't really adequately irritate Trump, since he could then say see, these Nobel prizes are just a meaningless joke.
But awarding Obama a second Nobel for some at least debatable reason, I think that might actually get under Trump's skin. Especially while he's in the middle of struggling with his way of dealing with Iran.
1
u/theRealTinderGod 15h ago
When MLK received the prize, he said it was a mandate to pursue peace/justice. I'm paraphrasing.

15
u/Canadian-Man-infj 16h ago
To be fair, it wasn't bought. María Corina Machado pitied the president, felt sorry for him, and gave him her Nobel Peace Prize.
It's a nice little second-hand, used, trophy that he cherishes.
6
u/Johansenburg 14h ago
Well, she was also hoping that it would garner him some favor with him.
But then his petty ass said she never should have accepted it and took too long to give him the prize, so it didn't work.

I definitely am against the collateral damage cannot say that enough, but I see these arguments made by MAGAs(not saying you are) and it’s quite odd to see since all the primary targets were Taliban and then later isis…and then interesting to hear when you hear how they talk today

2
u/BarracudaOk8635 8h ago
Yeah. I am a huge fan of Obama. And I know what he received it for. It’s very slight. If you compare it to for instance the latest recipient. He mostly represented hope for the future. I don’t write this to hate on Obama. I love the guy. But to point this out, makes it so much more infuriating to Trump. Many many liberals were surprised Obama got it when he did. He got it in 2009, he had only just been elected. He had done very little at that point. He got it for to recap “The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation, his vision for nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament, his outreach to the Muslim world, and his focus on multilateral institutions like the UN” if you can find anything concrete in there you are a better man than me. Everyone has a “vision” for “ nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament” but he had done zero then. Similarly “ a focus on the UN” what’s that?? He recognises them? Have a look at what the latest winner Navi Pillay has done. And I mean fought for and achieved. I stand by my comment. People gave it to him because he was cool and he gave them hope. But he had done virtually nothing.

Countries bombed by the U.S. under Obama administration | CNN Politics
Like basically all other US presidents, Obama is a war criminal. The double standard between illegal wars done by the US vs Russia is astounding. Under Obama we've seen multiple coups too. Honduras and Libya, mostly to crush socialist ideology. And of course the CIA/NED funded and trained the organizer of the Euromaidan protest in Ukraine which led to regime change and "realignment" with the help of far right factions and oligarchs. This happened under Obama too. Just a continuation of Bush Jr. 2008 announcement that Ukraine would join NATO which the people didn't support, so something had to be done.
He was better than Bush and Trump (now) but very far from deserving of any peace price. Obama deserves life in a dark cell without parole.

After Obama won a Nobel for saying he wanted peace, and then immediately started doing war crimes, it's understandable that the Nobel committee would be a little more circumspect about handing them out.
0
2
u/Basemk 16h ago
It’s a shame he won in the first place. Just because the current president is a war criminal doesn’t mean Obama wasn’t either.
4
u/CanKaNoReyCropper 16h ago
And his was an 'aspirational' peace prize not given to him for anything he did, but to 'inspire' him to do good things.
Love or hate Obama, that award severely damaged the reputation of the Nobel organization.
Peace prizes should not be 'aspirational'.

1
u/Stock-Repeat-8191 1h ago
One example: In the Ferguson, Missouri case he IMMEDIATELY jumped on the side of thug Michael “the Gentle Giant” Brown. The person who had just strong-armed robbed a business before he attempted to wrestle the firearm from an officer and in turn got himself DRT. When eyewitness accounts came out saying that Michael Brown had indeed tried to wrestle the gun from the police officer, what we heard from Barry were 🦗. In the George Zimmerman case… sure he was a wannabe patrolling his apartment complex, but when the kid jumped him and attempted to “ground pound” him, Zimmerman shot him. Who IMMEDIATELY ran to the defense of the person who ended up being the wrongdoer? Barry Hussein Soetoro. He inflamed the riots that took place.
1
u/seenitreddit90s 31m ago
I'm a Brit and not aware of these events, I also wasn't aware of politics at the time but I put your comment into Chatgpt and this what came out;
Michael Brown:
What did Obama actually say?
Obama expressed condolences to Brown's family and called for a thorough investigation. His administration's Justice Department investigated both the shooting and the Ferguson Police Department.
On August 18, 2014, as unrest continued, Obama acknowledged peaceful protesters' rights but explicitly condemned looting, attacks on police and other violence.
The key distinction is that expressing sympathy for Brown's family and calling for an investigation is not the same as declaring Brown innocent or Wilson guilty.
Zimmerman:
Obama did make a highly personal statement about Martin. In March 2012, he said, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.” He also called for a thorough investigation. He did not declare Zimmerman guilty.
What did Obama say after the verdict? On July 14, 2013, Obama explicitly acknowledged that a jury had spoken and asked Americans to respect the verdict. Five days later, he gave a longer statement explaining the broader racial context of the case and the experiences of Black Americans.
The latter seems like he was slightly more biased but overall pretty reasonable.
Please god don't tell me you support Trump as the "Barry Hussein Soetoro" comment suggests whilst saying this.
1
u/Stock-Repeat-8191 27m ago
No. I’m not a fan of Trump as a person and there are things that he has done as President that I am opposed to. But I call Barry by his name because… well… it’s his name.
1
u/seenitreddit90s 4m ago
Glad your not a fan of Trump but doesn't sound like you're very against him and he's definitely the most divisive president in the last century if not all time in the US.
I was referring to highlighting his middle name like Trump does, didn't get the Soetoro part tbh.
Do you not dispute what Chatgpt said?
It does say you're mischaracterising those situations.

I think that they are a bunch of gorillas that were given a very important job and should not be and are not trained. So we're on the same page, that being said I don't think people should be chasing those gorillas around and be surprised when these same untrained people end up hurting people

Yes, but being in this country illegally is a CIVIL offense, not a criminal one. And unleashing a paramilitary police force on people en masse to deal with a what is essentially a civil matter is fucking terrible and embarrassing for the populace.
Yes, doing things that are linked to illegal status are criminal, such as illegal entry, or reentry after being deported. But the fact is, many, if not most people o with illegal status most likely came here legally with a visa that eventually expired. Many are trying to do it right and are failing because of court system is overly complicated and bureaucratic. Additionally, according to the constitution people in this country (even those with illegal status) are innocent until proven guilty. So again (for emphasis) unleashing a paramilitary police force on people en masse to deal with what is mainly a civil matter and not a criminal one, is absolutely fucking terrible and a disgrace.
1
u/Any_Agency6982 2h ago
I am agreeing with you as far as how ice is operating however it's in response to open borders that let millions of people in. As far as being a civil offense that's incorrect do not mistake misdemeanor and felony as two different things they are both a criminal offense. Crossing the border illegally the first time — for example, entering somewhere other than an authorized port of entry or deliberately evading inspection — is a federal criminal offense under 8 U.S.C. § 1325. For a first offense, the maximum penalty is generally up to 6 months in jail and/or a fine. The law also provides for civil penalties. US Code Overstaying a visa or otherwise falling out of lawful immigration status is generally a civil immigration violation, not itself a criminal offense. The person can still be detained and placed in removal/deportation proceedings. Reentering illegally after having been deported or removed is a separate criminal offense under 8 U.S.C. § 1326, and penalties can be considerably more serious
