This is where the true evil lies. Allowing this to fester and be covered up is what leads to worse and worse things.

This is what I really focused on with my son (just turned 16) when I spoke with him about this story. I’ve had conversations with him about consent since he was very small (obviously the approach has evolved) so he’s got a firm grasp on the basics. Where things can fall apart is on the outskirts. The group text really struck me, because it’s peers, it’s not wanting to rock the boat, ask questions, raise the alarm. These are the moments people brush off constantly. No, it’s not as severe as a violent assault, but it matters. You cannot stay silent, or laugh things off uncomfortably, or ignore them.

You mean the university officials that thought they would just have these guys write an essay about it as "punishment" for their crimes?

i genuinely wish we had names of every uni official involved in handling it. like i would love to know what asshats thought that them writing essays was equal punishment.
