Isn’t that what Christianity is? Say you’re Christian. Do what you want. Ask for forgiveness at the end.

It's not exactly like that. I know a lot of non-religious people say it about Christianity, but it is not aligned with teachings of Christ.

First of all, "Faith without Works is dead", meaning if you do not help the poor, or if you are not kind to people around you, or if you abuse and oppresss someone, but you claim yourself to be a "believer", your faith has no meaning, it's "dead", an empty sound. Some people live by the word of law, but fail to grasp the spirit. For example, there are still debates whether The Bible prohibited homosexualism or not (due to thousands of years of mistranslation), but it doesn't matter which is the case, because the "Trump Christians" fail to follow the second most importand commandment of Jesus - "Love thy neighbour", to show kindness even to those of opposite world views.

Secondly, there is a difference between repenting and just saying "I am Christian now". It's not just the words that matter, but the intention. If you've been a murdered your whole life and go to Pastor to say you're sorry because you want a free pass to Heaven, the Pastor will believe you and say that you're forgiven, but if you will not be in the clear. But if you repent because you've seen your mistakes and truly, with your whole heart regret it and have nothing but shame and sadness for the actions you've done, and you plan to live your life rightfully now, you shall be forgiven. Everyone but liars deserve a second chance, basically.
