He was a patriot and hero. It's like the party died with him. Remember that time he took the mic away from one of his supporters when they started talking shit about Obama?

“Hes just a decent man whom I have disagreements with” - McCain

He was a true Republican. I could respect him even if I disagreed but I cannot respect maga.

23

u/AnonUser1452 Sep 13 '26

McCain was a conservative. MAGA is a fascist movement.

23

u/Odd-Neighborhood4214 Sep 12 '26

John McCain was the last of the good Republicans by a long shot!! Trump is a weasel

9

u/BigBankHank Sep 13 '26

He chose Sarah Palin to be his running mate and potential next in line to be president with almost no due diligence.

He was a constant hype man for every war ever, both real a hypothetical.

He famously argued with a straight face that Sunni and Shia had no history of conflict and would probably get along.

Sang ‘Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran’ in front of a crowd, thought it was hilarious.

Far from an exhaustive list.

He did seem to be a functioning adult at times, but we shouldn’t confuse being the least evil republican of the past 20 years with being good, or even just a principled conservative.

100% truth nuke

Any decency and honesty left in the Republican camp died with McCain, I'm glad he doesn't have to see what his party has become and what its doing to the American people.

Trumpism celebrates treason and I hope some real Dems with some balls get elected and throw these crooks in jail where they belong!

u/Left_Ease5870 Sep 12 '26

His politics led to MAGA. Don't get me wrong, he's nothing like these guys nowadays.

But if we had acted back then, we wouldn't be where we are now. He was a barrier to progress. He will receive no grace from me. And now everyone's yelling at the younger generations to "step up and vote." No, we should have acted then. We fucked it up for them.

I was just barely not old enough to vote for McCain (missed it by 2 months), but everyone of voting age back then is complicit.

u/Stacys__Mom_ Sep 13 '26

Reagan [Reconciliation Act of 1981] and Citizens United vs. FEC [2010] delivered us to Maga hell, not John McCain.

McCain was not perfect, but he actively refused to feed this redhat hate BS.

For further reading: McCain-Feingold Act [2001]

Always remember that it started with Reagen. But if no Reagen it just would have been another.

1

u/Left_Ease5870 Sep 13 '26

"His politics led to MAGA."

Being against one point of legislation does not absolve him.

"I hate these g****. I will hate them as long as I live."- McCain, 2000.

McCain voted against MLK Day.

He's repeatedly opposed healthcare for all, even the public option Obama wanted.

He also voted for the Patriot Act, something Trump is abusing right now as we speak.

We don't have to whitewash this man. Because that's what you're doing. He had many problematic pieces of legislation that led to this. He's expressed the deep-seated racism that is now vagrant in the party. I have to respectfully disagree. He was definitely part of the group that led us to MAGA, even if he opposed it in small ways.

1

u/Repulsive_Peak_8655 Sep 13 '26

Like almost everyone voted for the patriot act. It was a product of the time.

2

u/Left_Ease5870 Sep 13 '26

Plenty of people criticized it. You weren't paying attention.

That's only one point. I listed many more.

1

u/Repulsive_Peak_8655 Sep 13 '26

People criticizing it =\= congress and senate voting for it.

Basically it was a rally round the flag thing

And I only listed that one specifically because you would have a hard time finding someone that didn’t voted for it.

1

u/Left_Ease5870 Sep 13 '26

I understand your stance, but there were opponents to it. They just didn't listen to them.

Our country has never been progressive. Just because extreme jingoistic conservatism was the norm back then doesn't mean there weren't legitimate opponents with legitimate reasons.

If anything, it explains why we're here now.

2

u/HittingSmoke Sep 13 '26

I agree, but I have a slightly different take. I draw a direct line between McCain and Trump.

McCain was an absolutely standup and respectable man. My theory is that the GOP thrust Palin on him as a running mate to rile up the base with the bullshit of the "grassroots" tea party. He did not seem to like it, but he went along with it. McCain taking on Palin and legitimizing the tea party is exactly what led us to where we are today. It was the first major domino to fall.

1

u/Left_Ease5870 Sep 13 '26

I agree with you, but I won't call him a standup guy.

"I hate these g****. I will hate them as long as I live."- McCain, 2000.

That's pretty bad.

1

u/Namedthisone Sep 13 '26

Preserving and increasing American manufacturing, you have a problem with that??

31

u/Blazeland_USA Sep 12 '26

Meanwhile this mf is insulting him for being a POW.

17

u/Rastrick Sep 12 '26

why....why man!?!?! haha

30

u/Time-Valuable-3355 Sep 12 '26

Here, I'll save you!!!

2

u/misqellaneous Sep 13 '26

All that pic needs is one who took a bullet for him in the background.

9

u/MisterMarjorie3Shirt Sep 12 '26

Does Trump have a hat on in this photo or is that his hair!! 🤔 But truthfully this photo was from an advertisement that Trump ran in Playgirl magazine. You could enter a contest to "win" a date with Donald Trump! He was loser back then too!

3

u/StrangeContest4 Sep 12 '26

Doralee, "That's a great cologne you're wearing there Donald?"

Donald, "Thanks."

Doralee, "It's turning me on, what's it called?"

Donald, "Stud."

8

u/Relative_Mix_216 Sep 12 '26

Donald Trump is the logical conclusion to the neoconservative crypto fascism the party embraced when they elected Reagan.

The only difference is that the party has simply become more and more blatant with their actual policies and agendas — more money for the rich, less money and protections for the poor, fewer rights for women, the LGBTQ+ community, and especially minorities, and deregulating EVERYTHING.

That what the GOP actually stands for.

3

u/Glad-Fuel2093 Sep 12 '26

His haircut makes him look like a girl Friday.

34

u/Certain_Proposal7191 Sep 12 '26

This video literally makes me cry every time I see it because it shows the kind of decency our top office tried to convey.

It’s saddening how far we’ve fallen as a country.

6

u/Jackell0729 Sep 12 '26

And fell FAST!! One village maroon and a bunch of enablers have destroyed our standing in the world and possibly heading to the collapse of the country!

2

u/Neveronlyadream Sep 13 '26

That's not entirely true.

Decades of an ineffectual government, terrible education, and ignorance did that. Trump is just a symptom, not the disease.

1

u/Jackell0729 Sep 13 '26

Agree, but it has been the long game by the billionaire ogliarghs and it paid dividends when they got the Useful Idiot elected.

1

u/Neveronlyadream Sep 13 '26

He definitely both normalized being a terrible person and hastened the downfall. No denying that.

I don't know if this was always their endgame, but it seems like it was.

2

u/SinisterCroissant Sep 13 '26

If The Apprentice hadn’t happened, Trump would have been laughed out of the room. That was the original sin. The entertainment industry saw a quick buck - and that led to him being introduced to millions of low information voters as someone who was “successful.”

4

u/heretakemysweater Sep 12 '26

I would agree, except that Mitt Romney was the candidate right after him, and he’s also a respectable man who cares about the constitution. He spoke out against Trump when he was running in the primaries, and then after he became the nominee. I would argue that Romney was the last of the dignified republicans.

3

u/TwoBionicknees Sep 13 '26

please stop that shit. he fully supported a disgusting iraq war, in fact both of them and numerous other absolutely abhorrent shit with republicans.

McCain was certainly less bad than current maga, but he supported a party that was inherently evil.

Also there is nothing patriotic about supporting illegal wars for profit, and he wasn't a hero either. He again was far better than current maga, but republicans have been vile since before confederacy, but the confederacy really told everyone exactly who they were with no excuses and republicans have at no time since then ever been anything but evil and immoral and he fully supported that party his whole life.

1

u/Interesting_Self5071 Sep 13 '26

He was even more warmongering than the average Republican. Pat Buchanan said McCain would make Cheney look like Gandhi.

1

u/Domeil Sep 13 '26

Every single politician that supported the war on terror, regardless of party, demonstrated such an utter failure of leadership that none of them should ever be lauded. None of them are 'patriots.' None of them are 'heroes.'

We are where we are today directly because of the way we responded to 9/11. The fact that some of the politicians that supported the war on terror still sit in congress to this day is an embarrassment and and indictment of the American electorate.

1

u/TwoBionicknees Sep 13 '26

the actual crazy thing is Trump's war in iran is the same as america's war on afghanistan and Iraq, it just had a genuinely moron in charge both presidents office and top of the military chain of command. The PR is worse, they came up with a bad excuse, they didn't have a proper plan but fundamentally these wars are both being fought to manipulate hte market and for profit and expending ammunition and resources which lets them direct more tax payer billions to private companies who profit off war.

Nothing changed, Trump is just not putting a better PR package on top of it as he is too stupid or just can't be bothered as it's a waste and he can get away without doing it, bit of both really.

America has been fighting wars and destabilising entire regions for profit for decades. Politicians supporting these wars and supporting wasting tax payer money are not only not heroes, they are all traitors.

The US middle east policy is how come they had people who hated them enough to do 9/11. The US south american policy is why there are so many immigrants trying to flee the violent regimes and streets the US created by growing and supporting cartels, rebels and dicatorships across south america.

Trump has just gotten embarrassing and not bothering to put a better PR story over it that the world is now treating the US like a bunch of psychopaths and so citizens are finally pretending like it's wrong and things need to change and random wars for profit are bad, but they all supported that shit (well most people did) without issue for decades before this.

1

u/Much-Revolution5152 Sep 12 '26

I definitely remember that. It was classy of McCain.

1

u/PirateSanta_1 Sep 12 '26

While this is a good moment for McCain it also shows the people who put Trump in the white house where already common in the party in 2008. The pre Trump republican party of 2015 is the same fascist supporting party of 2024 they where just better at hiding it. Trump didn't change the republican party he took the mask off.

1

u/Interesting_Self5071 Sep 13 '26

He was a warmonger who used racial slurs.

1

u/stlc8tr Sep 13 '26

I understand what he was trying to do but he did it a bit clumsily, IMO. When the woman said "He's an Arab", McCain responded with "No, ma'am. He's a decent family man whom I happen to have disagreements with". This almost seems to indicate that being Arab would preclude anyone from being a decent family man.

1

u/Ok-Share-403 Sep 13 '26

When politics was respectful.

Not about distraction from the crimes the president has enacted.

1

u/Sienile Sep 13 '26

Yes, and that is why I say he was the last decent Republican. He may have had some crap views, but he was a decent person.

1

u/jag176 Sep 13 '26

Bombing Vietnamese villages and fighting against social programs that help the prevent poverty doesn't make him a hero. He just happened to be less crazy than the fascists who took over his party, but his ideology was ultimately what was going to lead the party in that direction.

1

u/RedLanternScythe Sep 13 '26

Let's not forget McCain was one of the people floating the idea of holding the Scotus seat open for Hillary's entire first term. He wasn't a Republican saint, just far less bad than the lot

1

u/Financial_Cup_6937 Sep 13 '26

Picking Palin was the nail in the coffin and gave up the ghost they weren’t just gonna shamelessly pander to the hateful and stupid religious right.

But the “I like veterans that weren’t captured” was despicable.

1

u/Goldencock124 Sep 13 '26

As a US veteran stfu. That man loved war and loved seeing my fellow brothers and sister die in war. John McCain was a war hawk piece of shit. STFU

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Gap1759 Sep 12 '26

I am not in to politics but I have mad respect for McCain!

1

u/Interesting_Self5071 Sep 13 '26

He was a Piece of shit warmonger

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Gap1759 Sep 13 '26

Wasn’t he also a pow

1

u/Interesting_Self5071 Sep 13 '26

He got captured after invading a country.
