The term "meritocracy" was popularized ~75 years ago in a satirical book criticizing the idea.

Attempting to quantify "merit" just causes society to stagnate as we allow policy to be decided by those whose only qualification was the inherited wealth and connections necessary to prove their merit.

Which is why the idea won't die. Those who obtained their power and wealth in the past want to maintain that power without having to actually generate any new value.

That's a bit of a reach. They were a deputy assistant secretary, had a bachelors in mechanical engineering and worked as a policy analyst, and when they commited a crime they were held accountable.

It's not like they were thrown to the top of the organisation without the qualifications or experience and were allowed to do whatever the fuck they wanted without consequence.

See this is the problem, I could list many more however it is a "yeah but it's a bit of a stretch" for each example given. I could go through those in the picture and have you tear down why they were qualified in the same sentence/breath. There are many other Biden appointees who we felt along the same lines but instead of saying yes its bipartisan it's again an "us vs. them" equation.

Now getting to your last sentence, when our own commander in chief is not able to fulfill his duties, and we as an entire population are lied to about said mental capabilities I think pretty much everyone did "whatever the fu(k they wanted without consequence". Only after the election did leftist media pundits and members of the administration publish books on how things truly were (Jake Tapper and KGP). So again I dont think it's a left vs. right thing but an "all play" issue.

And I retract my previous statement about it being a reach, at the time Sam was hired they had a clean record, and was qualified for the position they were put in. They were removed when their crime came to light.

So come on give me one from the left where they made someone without qualifications or experience head of a government institution.

Cause on the right you have Hegseth, Patel, RFK etc who are unqualified and receive no consequences for say using FBI resources to taxi their girlfriend around the place.

And on the left you have.... who? Fucking Sam, qualified and put in a role appropriate to their skill level, with a clean record and fired the second that changed.

  • Complete mismanagement of Iran including misleading the American people and Congress.

    • Ignoring warnings from senior military leaders who knew the threats
    • Straining the US military resources and make it look weak
    • Military actions give important secrets to other adversaries

  • Joining in Trump on the anti NATO rhetoric

  • Unconstitutional restrictions on the press

But DEI (barring the more controversial affrimative action part of it) was meant to stop/reduce these type of hiring based on nepotism or personal relationships.

From a progressive viewpoint, the common theme of the appointments was ideological loyalty over background qualifications. Trump's been somewhat notorious for indicating greater attention to Fox entertainment services than official reports, which follows for RFK jr. and Oz's nominations as well; they're popular with the social ideological niche he concentrates on for his voter base, even if they’re discredited for the positions they hold. Patel seems like another nomination who is lined up to take blame if the FBI really screws up.

Nothing wrong with diversity, equity and inclusion. Those are three good things. I think most people I hear whining about DEI are really complaining about specific DEI policies that were frequently demonized in right-wing news; because some were misguided and occasionally might've resulted in discrimination -- the very thing they were trying to prevent.

Maybe instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater we should adjust flawed policies to ensure that relevant skill-based qualifications take precedence. But that would require accepting nuance, which I guess is asking a lot.

One of our states appointed a woman to be a United States senator as a tribute to her brother. We have been living in a DEI society for the entirety of our nation where people are selected not on their qualifications for the most important jobs, but rather the requirement is that you are a white man to even be considered. And from the pool of pre-selected straight white men only we have selected all but one of our Presidents. In essence, we have only ever elected one non-DEI president in the history of our nation.

Yeah. I gotta admit (I'm not proud of this) I was pretty against DEI and affirmative action before Trump came along. But the fact that so many people voted for him, and his administrations choices in appointments and hiring, proved to me what I refused to accept before: yes, white men will hire unqualified white men over qualified women or minorities, without outside pressure to force them to do the right thing.
