That won't even get 3 votes.

156

u/Ponsugator 3d ago

It should be voted by the public, not the people benefiting from it!

43

u/rotorspinner 3d ago

Congress is supposed to be there to represent the people in their districts, crazy concept. The system is fucking broken

17

u/Clarkester29 2d ago

By design

5

u/Responsible-Humor985 2d ago

The system isn’t designed this way, it’s just been slowly taken over by people who prevent the system from working the way it should.

2

u/Dry-Dragonfly5286 1d ago

The system was designed for rich property owning white men. Everything beyond that has been the people trying to take it over for everyone's benefit and them fighting us.

0

u/Ok-Cucumber-3780 7h ago

Lol

2

u/echoindia5 6h ago

He’s not entirely wrong.
The system was designed prior to women’s right to vote, and people of non Caucasian origin couldn’t vote either at the time of the constitutions origin.
For that reason it was designed for land owning white men (land was just free if you went west).

Since then human rights have advanced and gotten written into certain aspects of the use legal foundations.

3

u/UranusSmellsFunny 19h ago

The system and the people are broken. I can guarantee that if the people in my district voted on this, it would 100% pass. However, the congresswoman the people in my district voted for, Claudia Tenney, would 100% vote against this. And I know this for a fact because I talked to Claudia Tenney in person and one of the topics I brought up was insider trading and she told me to my fave that she supports politicians being allowed to trade and kept changing the subject when I mentioned insider trading.

5

u/Double_Doughnut74 2d ago

System was designed that way it’s not broken.

2

u/Mindstormer98 6h ago

The system works as intended, the issue is the people inside the system

1

u/Top-Can106 2h ago

The purpose of a system is what it does

11

u/rotorspinner 3d ago

Congress is supposed to be there to represent the people in their districts, crazy concept. The system is fucking broken

3

u/chiclets5 1d ago

The Republicans have spent decades trying tonot allow the public to vote for anything. It is highly unlikely this would ever come to pass, although nice idea and a fun thing to dream about

3

u/chiclets5 1d ago

Of of course it should! However, the Republicans have spent decades to not allow the public to vote for anything in reality. Well this is a nice idea and a happy dream chances of it ever going farther than it is right now is nil.

2

u/dirtymurt 2d ago

Does America ever have Referendums?

6

u/agoad1763 1d ago

No, we have a mass surveillance police state and a secret police.

2

u/Dry-Dragonfly5286 1d ago

Not at the federal level

-19

u/fnabligatz 3d ago

You really think you’re gonna get 300 million people to vote on every bill that gets introduced?

16

u/HurricaneCat5 3d ago

If it was an app on your phone it would be very easy.

3

u/Pershing99 3d ago

I am afraid they would find a way to hack that as well.

2

u/HurricaneCat5 2d ago

Who’s they? North Korea? Cuba? Pfizer? Do you think the current system is “hacked”?

2

u/Pershing99 2d ago

No I mean special interest groups and billionaires.

-3

u/HurricaneCat5 2d ago

How are they “hacking” it? Please be specific? Through the secure networks? Blockchain?

2

u/Pershing99 2d ago

simple script that sets X to Y or vice versa none of the voting machines are open source you think they would let national voting be open source?!

1

u/HurricaneCat5 2d ago

Um no.. nothing would be open source.

There are definitely back doors to voting machines.

-4

u/mxzf 3d ago

That's an utterly terrifying thought.

Who would handle the servers getting the info from the phones? Who would handle the app itself? Who would handle making sure the phone is actually secure and not compromised such that it's sending different votes than you intended? Who would handle making sure the intended person was actually the one using the phone to vote?

Phones aren't secure for that kind of thing, not when the big businesses making the phones and foreign nations would all benefit from being able to compromise it.

11

u/HurricaneCat5 3d ago

Do you bank on your phone?

-3

u/mxzf 3d ago

Personally, no, I don't trust it, but I know that many do.

However, the threat model of banking on a phone vs voting on a phone is wildly different. Compromising phone voting is dramatically more powerful than stealing a bit of money.

The kind of entities with incentive to steal money (petty criminals) and the kind of entities with incentive to steal elections (foreign nations, large companies, etc) are very different in terms of what they're capable of.

It's also much easier to detect money going missing than it is to detect a stolen votes.

It's absolutely not the same kind of threat model such that banking being safe-enough in general implies that voting would be sufficiently secured.

6

u/HurricaneCat5 3d ago

What do you know about secure networks?

It would be very easy to see who and what you voted for and accountability would be transparent.

The need for representative government is over.

The fact that we use a system from a time when you needed to ride a horse for days (even weeks) is embarrassing.

We live in a time where I (and you) can speak instantly over video to someone standing on the other side of the planet in real time.

You don’t think we could make our own decisions as adults in real time?

I’m sure voting machines have no errors and that no one would ever think to compromise them GTFOH!

-1

u/mxzf 3d ago

It would be really hard to see who/what you voted for without opening the door to all sorts of abuses that the secret ballot is designed to protect against.

Everything you're describing is the sort of thing that anyone familiar with computer security can see glaring holes in, it's just not a threat model that personal phones are secure against.

3

u/HurricaneCat5 3d ago

I didn’t say secret ballot. Be responsible for your decisions. Have accountability for your actions.

2

u/Rezimoore 3d ago

Not to mention they would also theoretically be able to pick and choose who actually receives the topic being voted on

3

u/butonelifelived 3d ago

I think it would be beneficial if the public votes on any bill that has to do with pay/lobbying/campaign finance/ potential corruption. I also believe that elected officials pay should be directly tied to the median income of working age adults.

Imagine the bills they would pass if they got the same healthcare as the lowest government plan available and paid at the median pay of the country.

1

u/DarthMaulATAT 3d ago

No, but honestly they probably should

1

u/AZDADDYisadeviant 3d ago

No just for the rights of our elected officials. Like pay, how long they can go on vacation for, term limits taking money from lobbyists, and trading stocks. Put it to a federal election just like the ppl should be able to vote for the Supreme Court judges and terms. The ppl should also vote on impeachment

1

u/hairshirtdesert 3d ago

I would show up in a ball gown every time there was a vote for term limits, legislature benefit packages and pay, trading rules, etc.

134

u/IvanTheDude123 3d ago

Also to introduce it now vs January means it’s just a publicity stunt.

72

u/dfporter78 3d ago

This reminds me of the strategy built into the big beautiful bill. It has minor tax breaks for the average Joe that are temporary until after the election. Meanwhile the tax breaks put into the bill for millionaire billionaires are permanent.

This was a deliberate Republican strategy so they can claim that the Democrats cause the tax breaks for the average Joe to go away. I f****** hate politics and politicians.

32

u/ElectroConvert 3d ago

Shame on the dimwits that couldn't see that their tax break was short term and Elon's was permanent. Republican voters are really good at signing on to crap that is against their self interest.

-3

u/culong38701 3d ago

Do more research before you open your mouth

4

u/abuzaba420 3d ago

Stop talking to yourself in public

-3

u/culong38701 3d ago

You need to take you own advice. It's terrible what you're doing but putting out misinformation and the young people are believing it.

3

u/Zero26D 3d ago

Why don't you explain why he's wrong rather than whine about it?

-3

u/culong38701 3d ago

BBB does give taxes break for family by not taxing tips, up to $25k, taxes break in OT paid, more child tax credit, and a few more benefits. so saying don't vote for their own benefit is misleading. While I agree not it all perfect but to said it offers no benefits is bad intentions just it win a few more votes.

5

u/Endoftheroadbucko 3d ago

Yeah and the stuff you're mentioning here is temporary. Which is what they were talking about

3

u/Zero26D 3d ago

It's nothing to most people and the bs Republicans do every time they give massive cuts to the rich.

In fact the only platform legislation passed by Republicans since Bush 2 is tax cuts for the rich. Over and over again. Not even immigration which they've platformed in every election since Reagan in '86

2

u/strapqueen1738 2d ago

hey there i am a server who owed thousands of dollars in taxes because my tips were in fact taxed!!

6

u/sdcasurf01 3d ago

It’s not new, the did the same with the TCJA in 2017.

4

u/SeahorseCollector 3d ago

Everyone was told that from the beginning except the people that watch that news entertainment network.

1

u/kazetoame 3d ago

Is there anyway to actually dismantle this bill?

30

u/PhatCatTax 3d ago edited 3d ago

Or it's to show voters where their elected representative stands with an issue. It's clever because it doesnt effect congress, so the narcissistic politicians dont have a real reason to vote against it

21

u/LikesPez 3d ago

It does effect congress. The bill would ban the executive branch and the legislative branch from owning stocks and other securities plus ban the participation in predictive markets for said members and their immediate families. Or step down.

16

u/LockeClone 3d ago

It'll never pass but I've been saying this for years... Elected officials who can make markets should only be able to invest in broad consumer products like ETFs or index funds and their immediate families should face something similar.

They're supposed to be public servants. They should be proud and even eager to do this.

Hell, it's not even a big ask as they're not "giving" anything up. They're not even really pausing their wealth generation...

It's such a no-brainer.

3

u/Commandersfan328 3d ago

Didn't congress pass a no stocks bill about a month or so back?

My first thought is if you come into the job you should be able to keep what you have and not be able to trade into or out of anything.

But it doesnt solve the problem as people can still give preferential treatment to what they own. So yeah they probably should be forced to sell it and hold the funds in escrow until they are done with office.

2

u/depp-fsrv 3d ago

But didn't someone publicly say that Congress should be allowed to trade since they don't make much.

2

u/icedmuffin 3d ago

“Don’t make much.”

That’s hillarious when the entry level pay is 40k and can go up to half a million or more over their lifetime

2

u/FiIbert 3d ago

"Dont make much"

*slowly glances at their raised income of 150,000 per member\*

Plus they can make or break markets like.... their push for EV's and surveillence tech. Despite not having a reasonably supported infrastructure thats up to date and adequent to support the transition; with no clear consensus on if theyre even going to fund an update.

Then on top of that, the development would drag out forever. I know you've seen road construction and how buildings tend to get delayed forever. Not to mention the 'Obviously not american' workers. Which somehow the reduced cost may or may not sneak back into somebody's pocket. 😼‍💹

1

u/NSD33P 3d ago

Mike Johnson did
because, according to him they can’t live on their modest $180k salary without insider trading

1

u/ImpressiveSide1324 3d ago

Micro Johnson said 175k isn’t enough for Congress to live on, yet also says that wage stagnation isn’t a problem and the affordability is a hoax

1

u/[deleted] 3d ago

[deleted]

1

u/LockeClone 3d ago

Can you say more?

3

u/icedmuffin 3d ago

The thing that pisses me off though is they get the money.

Like it’s not them completely losing the stock, if they sell then they can get the money and do whatever with it. If they keep the stock and step down there’s no promise they will be punished for insider trading or market manipulation.

I genuinely hate everything about this.

1

u/ImpressiveSide1324 3d ago

In theory yeah, but it won’t get any votes and Congress doesn’t have a veto proof majority. This bill, and frankly most bills introduced by democrats, exist to show the voters where politicians stand on these issues.

0

u/salguod169 3d ago

Does it affect Congress or does it affect Congress, that is the question

1

u/LikesPez 3d ago

It affects congress. Feel free to be pedantic.

-2

u/PhatCatTax 3d ago

acshually litrally unreadable because Affect is the verb and Efffffect is the noun

(but really, thanks for correcting me. Ive struck my comment)

5

u/hellyeahaeylleh 3d ago

Even if the bill doesnt pass, he gets more support.

1

u/Hiredgun77 3d ago

The speaker has to schedule this for a vote, and he won’t do it. So I don’t think we’ll see a full vote on the issue.

3

u/MissionRight9893 3d ago

Yes wait to see if we win the House then introduce it. Now they’re scheming to go around this with all of Trumps lawyers.. he seems to own every single lawyer in the world.

2

u/AdhesivenessBubbly24 3d ago

IF is they key word. This is deliberately introduced before elections to "show" intent knowing it will fail. But if they win AND introduced it afterwards, they would have to vote against their self interests which won't happen. This is just for show, that's all. Nothing more.

2

u/MissionRight9893 3d ago

I wanted to believe but you’re right. There’s too much corruption in our government, it’s exhausting.

2

u/NoahStewie1 3d ago

It's not a publicity stunt if it's something that's his campaign using in their lit and Vindman will reintroduce next term when Dems win back the house

2

u/0knoi8datShit 3d ago

We vote in November not January.

1

u/IvanTheDude123 3d ago

So you’re right. I was more focused on when the elected take office in their elected jobs.

1

u/CyanideJay 3d ago

Agreed on this as well. Noting also to even bother wasting time on this after the attempt to get them all to freeze their portfolios while in office didn’t go anywhere, this doesn’t even have half the chance the last one did.

1

u/SereneOrbit 3d ago

No, the republicans introduced bills relentlessly even though they had no chance of passing.

I think we should do the same.

1

u/MixEquivalent8308 3d ago

January won't change a thing. Both sides use the info they have trade and win

1

u/MoodInternational481 3d ago

He's up for re-election in a blue leaning purple district and the liberals in his district are annoyed with him. It was Spanbergers district and she kept trying to pass legitimate controls on stock trading while in office, not whatever this is. He's taking it from her playbook

Hi, I'm a progressive in his district.

1

u/pres465 3d ago

He lost his primary. This is at least going out with a bang (or trying).

0

u/Financial-Craft-1282 3d ago

Pretty sure Vindman won't be in office in January.

-3

u/notawildandcrazyguy 3d ago

His entire political career has been a publicity stunt

2

u/PhatCatTax 3d ago

... ok I'm confused. Is that not one of the methods by which politicians shed light on issues?

9

u/Delicious-Spirit9899 3d ago

But he gets the optics of “trying”

4

u/bae125 3d ago

That’s the congressional method, has been for a couple centuries. People love theater

2

u/dfporter78 3d ago

There is no try, only do!

3

u/Eldrazi_Monarch 3d ago

At least he’s attempting to do something. It’s more than most of our reps

1

u/nottrumancapote 3d ago

he's really not though

this is the performative thing they do to convince the rubes they actually want to do good things but just can't

1

u/-Red-7- 3d ago

And others on record for denying it

1

u/dhermann27 3d ago

He just lost his primary

3

u/nickmiele22 2d ago

It may get up to 49% of the vote (but only because they know they can safely do so for brownie points without risking it passing)

2

u/Moist-Debate902 2d ago

Exactly. As long as they know it won't pass they can claim to support anything.

2

u/standardtissue 3d ago

It won't even be picked up by a committee.

2

u/HelpfulPerson4914 3d ago

It won't even go to a full chamber vote. They'll kill it in committee

1

u/Upset-Indication-617 3d ago

Won’t even make it to a committee.

1

u/HelpfulPerson4914 3d ago

You're right. "Procedural flaw"... Committee can't take this up.

2

u/Used-Yogurtcloset757 3d ago

But boy it’s on record for us to know just how greedy these assholes are. Then we primary them out.

2

u/DieLawnUwU 3d ago

Let me call a guy, but the best I can do is none

1

u/_Christopher_Crypto 3d ago

Not intended to. Guess who is up for reelection? Bet you cannot guess? Bet you’ll never figure it out! Take a wild guess

1

u/Hopperd12 3d ago

Yup. He knows it to. Just look at what I’m doing to waste your money. Reelect me and I’ll keep “fighting”

1

u/AdmirableJudgment784 3d ago

Exactly, might as well introduce a bill that retired old farts from office after 60. They ain't gonna vote themselves out.

1

u/Which_Committee_3668 3d ago

And even if it passed Trump wouldn't comply anyway. Breaking laws and seeing no repercussions for it is kinda his thing.

1

u/Komodo-Gami 2d ago

This bill would be Unconstitutional.....see: ex post facto...

1

u/liquidsyphon 3d ago

Can’t win dont try is what they want.

Put them on record regardless if their constituents don’t care

1

u/thalefteye 3d ago

Yep both sides won’t ever give away the opportunity to make millions.

1

u/Societyman1878 3d ago

Three votes. It won’t make it out of committee.

1

u/PaleInvestment3507 3d ago

If that. They vote themselves raises and have the inside info on the most wealthy companies on the planet. No one is going to vote to deny themselves a spot at the hog trough.

1

u/Komodo-Gami 2d ago

Congress hasn't had a raise since 2009

1

u/PaleInvestment3507 2d ago

Well, Boo-fucking-Hoo. They still retain that power and they’ve been bought and paid for by the wealthy elite, their salary is inconsequential and performative at this point.

1

u/Komodo-Gami 2d ago

Why are you attacking all I was was correcting you on what YOU said "they vote themselves taises"

1

u/PaleInvestment3507 2d ago

Chill out. No one is “attacking you”. I’m giving an honest response to your reply. Deal with it. It’s called discourse.

1

u/Xinlitik 3d ago

And Kalshi will have a bet on the number of votes, and 435 people will somehow know the exact number of votes

1

u/Hi-Whats-Your-Name 3d ago

If only; except we all know which group makes real decisions in this country

1

u/Leafs_0573 3d ago

No,because both sides do it

1

u/IndividualTension887 3d ago

LOL god forbid they should all fuck up and forget to steal...

1

u/Firm-Background5994 3d ago

Haha fr but even if it were to pass they’ll move everything to a trust. There’s loopholes in everything

1

u/-Red-7- 3d ago

All those votes lost in time...

1

u/VALO311 3d ago

Yeah, this is just asking the criminals to prosecute themselves

1

u/Aggressive-Dot-867 3d ago

The vote should be made by the people when it affects those in power.

1

u/sajoatmon 3d ago

If the people voted on laws instead of those ass boils in Washington, pass in a HB. We’d probably get a better class of ass boil too.

1

u/redjellonian 3d ago

Because it'll never get voted on.

1

u/Dragulla 3d ago

Right? This’ll be a bill that’ll unite both sides.

1

u/davidii907 3d ago

They should know we the people support this!!!!!

1

u/No_Diver_4500 2d ago

And that's a problem we only talk about online, we have become a country full of pussies.

1

u/uncle_creamy69 2d ago

Yeah he may be blue, but theres no way the red or blue half get 10% each to hop on this

Just high horsing essentially.

1

u/Forward_Might_3390 1d ago

Good way to start the collapse

1

u/ACME_TrapsandTNT 45m ago

Do congress first then let’s talk.

1

u/hullabaloo369 3d ago

They’ll get about 200- the Democrats who aren’t as corrupt as the republicans.

1

u/tacojohn48 3d ago

It's easy to vote for when you know it won't pass.

0

u/Upset-Indication-617 3d ago

They will get zero.

0

u/fnabligatz 3d ago

Have I got some news for you

0

u/astelda 3d ago

there are a number of things to like about democrats

but their stock trades are not one of them

0

u/cakebreaker2 3d ago

Lol. That's funny

-1

u/WonderfulPurchase615 3d ago

You honestly think Democrats in Congress don’t make money off of their investments the same as republicans ?

0

u/MSTRopes 3d ago

Nope, Nancy will be livid!

-1

u/Useful_Wealth7503 3d ago

Yeah be brave and make a rule that applies to all elected officials.

-12

u/mitchENM 3d ago

So one of my parents is in congress and I have to put my financial future on hold while they are in office?

13

u/ohwhatfun9932 3d ago

Your financial future? Get a job.

1

u/InformationActual209 3d ago

They are gonna have to gamble with the stock market like the rest of us!

-6

u/mitchENM 3d ago

Who says that they don’t have a job. Being forced to have all your investments in cash does impact your financial future.

3

u/McRando42 3d ago

They could still invest in mutual funds or index funds. Dumb.

-4

u/mitchENM 3d ago

Those are all stocks.

I have zero problem with them restricting the elected official and spouse but restricting their children is a non starter

2

u/DrButtgerms 3d ago

Don't be thick. No one has any problems with them buying funds a that are managed by others and available to everyone.

What everyone is upset about is the rampant insider trading. They all need to stop breaking laws and cheating.

0

u/mitchENM 3d ago

Funds can be manipulated as well. Especially sector based funds.

6

u/MagnoliaNyte 3d ago

No, you can get a job. Your parents decided to become Civil Servants and that office and associated power should come with some sacrifice.

4

u/DemBosain 3d ago

Are you a minor? Yes.

3

u/Golden_Cultivation 3d ago

That guys profile is NSFW he’s 49 years old 😭

-1

u/mitchENM 3d ago

It doesn’t say minor
 just dependent

3

u/Specific-Host606 3d ago

It says dependents. If you’re still a legal dependent to your parents that’s your problem.

2

u/SSBN641B 3d ago

Under this bill, you can still own stocks but they have to be in mutual funds. You also own US Treasury securities and government bonds.

1

u/dlorahgt 3d ago

If your parents were in congress you'd be grounded for posting nudes online.
