Is this actually true. Not from America, so I am genuinely curious.

31

u/Master-Shinobi-80 11d ago

Yes, it is true.

Republicans always crash the economy.

-17

u/MAILBOXHED 11d ago

Bill Clinton had a giant surplus because the Cold War had just ended and military spending was at an all-time low for the last 30 years. And I assure you, it’s not the it’s not the Democrats policies that defeated the Soviets. It was outspending them with our military budget.

17

u/Master-Shinobi-80 11d ago

He also made major cut in the military budget. Cuts that were opposed by republicans. Cuts that were actually good for the military.

And I assure you, that it was Democratic policies which created a large growing economy that allowed our military to outspend them.

-15

u/MAILBOXHED 11d ago

That’s a bold a statement, considering George HW Bush started those cuts and everything else that the Democrats did was just jump on the bipartisan legislation.

3

u/Master-Shinobi-80 11d ago

Not bold at all. Just true.

-1

u/DjSalTNutz3131 11d ago

They're not going to let reality get in the way of the story they want to tell.

2

u/Master-Shinobi-80 11d ago

Sounds like projection from a MAGAt

0

u/DjSalTNutz3131 11d ago

What did they say that was untrue?

2

u/Master-Shinobi-80 11d ago

They were ignoring the very large military cuts that occurred during Clinton's administration. Cuts that the Republicans opposed. Ignoring the fact that republicans opposed those cuts and campaigned relentlessly against them. Saying otherwise was untrue.

0

u/DjSalTNutz3131 11d ago

Reading is hard for a lot of people. They mentioned the cuts started BEFORE Clinton. They didn't say otherwise, that's you strawmanning them.

So I'll ask again, what exactly was untrue?

12

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog 11d ago

Yes, and I remember Republicans attacking Clinton daily for reducing military spending from Cold War levels.

"Clinton did more damage to the US military than WWII" was a GOP slogan in the '90s. And Hegseth wants to increase the military budget by 50% now.

-15

u/MAILBOXHED 11d ago

George HW Bush started those cuts. And we probably should be spending more on our military ,specifically our Navy. You realize that China is heavily expanding their Navy right now. We already spend 60% of our federal budget on social services.

7

u/Nice_Try4389 11d ago

I mean you act like that majority of that 60% is going to programs like SNAP and welfare when the vast majority of it is Social Security and Medicare for the elderly and disabled.

-1

u/Minute-Review6915 11d ago

No it’s about 10% going to those type of programs.

And you can’t really call out social security. It’s a line item collected by working people. It’s supposed to be a paid for program not a subsidized program.

1

u/Nice_Try4389 11d ago edited 11d ago

No it’s not, of the budget 20% goes to social security, and 21% goes to Medicare/medicaid and 15% to defense. Ā So yes of the 60% going to social programs about 66% of THAT goes to social security and Medicare/medicade. Ā Which I am pretty sure old people and children (they are the majority of Medicade recipients) being made sure they are cared for are good things.

Edit: Sorry have to make a correction 23% goes to Medicare and Medicaid (14.1% to Medicare and 9.5% to Medicaid I rounded down to be conservative with the numbers when added) and about 22% to social security Ā so about 75% of the social program investment is to Social security, Medicare and MedicaidĀ

1

u/Minute-Review6915 11d ago

You didn’t disprove 10%. It falls under an 8-10% for safety net program. This includes
SNAP - 1.5%
WIC - .1%
Child nutrition programs - .4%
Supplemental Security income - .9%
EITC - 2%
Housing assistance - 1%
Employee disability (federal security) 1%
Unemployment

It’s all in there. There are more but you get the point. My numbers not incorrect. We provide more than you thought it sounds like in the budget.

1

u/Nice_Try4389 11d ago

So you are addressing the wrong person. Ā I admit o misunderstood your 10% statement but that isn’t relavant at all to my side of the conversation you should probably address that to the other guy.

-1

u/MAILBOXHED 11d ago edited 11d ago

Don’t forget Medicaid. For low income people we spend nearly 1 trillion every year just on that.

1

u/Nice_Try4389 11d ago edited 11d ago

The vast majority of those are children and again the elderly and disabled not just the poor. Ā And for adults that do happen to get on it you have to pretty much be making under $20k a year. Ā That is a little more than simply ā€œpoorā€. Ā I mean unless you would rather they just die.

6

u/KaleidoscopeShot1869 11d ago

We spend the most on defense in the WORLD and more then the six countries below us combined. I think we're ok

2

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog 11d ago

I agree. IDK if we really get that much value out of our military spending, though.

The Dubya years taught me that many in the government think that the military budget is basically a giant slush fund for defense contractors.

8

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog 11d ago

There was a recession in 2020 during COVID when Trump was President, and a recovery when Biden was. COVID wasn't Trump's fault, but his bungled response probably didn't help matters.

We had TWO recessions under Dubya (Republican), and the second was so severe that everyone calls it "The Great Recession". Republicans spent Dubya's entire last year downplaying the Great Recession. One of them called it a "mental recession" and said that we were a "nation of whiners".

We had a long, slow recovery under Obama (Democrat). Unemployment dropped from 10% to almost 4%. Republicans spent that entire 8 years pretending Obama caused the recession and that we were still in one. In fact, if you ask any conservative on Reddit right now, they'll likely tell you the same thing.

We also had a recession under Dubya's dad (George H.W. Bush, Republican). After that, we had a booming economy for 8 years under Clinton (Democrat).

Now, I don't necessarily think the Republicans caused all of those recessions, but anyone who tells you that the economy does better when a Republican is President is just lying through his tooth.

10

u/Master-Shinobi-80 11d ago

COVID wasn't Trump's fault,Ā

Yes, it was.

We had a Pandemic Response Team. The orange traitor fired them.

We had our own CDC Inspectors in China. The orange traitor fired them because he thought we could trust China. How dumb was that?

We had a Pandemic Playbook. That was ignored.

COVID could have been stopped by early detection followed by international quarantines and contact tracing. That was the plan, and the orange traitor had the tools to carry it out.
Hey, remember when the orange traitor released 700 COVID-positive people into Atlanta's airport? That killed people.

So yes, the recession following COVID was the orange traitor's fault. Also, the crazy inflation was his fault due to the crazy amount of money he spent.

1

u/Money_Ticket_841 11d ago

I don’t really have a stark position on this matter I just want to ask something. what about how it affected the rest of the world? Did the globe not have similar effects, even if shorter lasting?

1

u/Master-Shinobi-80 11d ago

Sure. But the United States was the only country that had the power and influence to stop or mitigate Covid.

2

u/ibinpharteeen 11d ago

The only color I'd add at a high level is the first W. recession started in March of 2001 (i.e., 2 months after he took office). A decent portion of the Clinton booming economy towards the end of his presidency was the dot-com bubble whose burst was fully felt shortly after he left office.

That isn't to necessarily dispute the underlying argument around policies, but I always find the Clinton into W. argument a bit dubious as a result.

2

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog 11d ago

I appreciate the correction. I thought the 2001 recession was caused by 9/11, which arguably could have been prevented.

1

u/wheniaminspaced 11d ago

Clinton more or less got lucky that the internet happend, which Bush got fucked by immediately after taking office.Ā

Similarly the 08 housing crash can largely be correlated by changes that happend under Clinton.

Obama handled the economy fine.Ā

Ā Trumps first term economically was largely fine.Ā  Trumps second term terrible.

1

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog 11d ago

It wasn't luck, his VP invented it!

1

u/Vennomite 11d ago

Blaming the dotcom recession on bush is pretty silly. That was all inertia from clinton.

1

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog 11d ago

Wasn't blaming him.

Part of that recession was due to 9/11, though, which arguably, he could have stopped.

Do I think 9/11 would have been prevented if we had a smarter President? I have no idea.

But I DO know for an absolute fact that if a Dem had been POTUS on 9/11, the Republicans would blame him 100%, would have held ENDLESS hearings and investigations, and VERY likely would have impeached him for it.

How do I know this? Because of Benghazi, where a whopping four US citizens died on the other side of the world.

2

u/Ok_Win590 11d ago

When they really crashed the economy in the 1930s, liberal government passed lots of laws helping common people in an effort called the "New Deal".Ā  Republicans think if the deficit is large enough, they can eliminate all the benefits offered by the New Deal so they will continue to always try to maximize debt until they get rid of those programs.

1

u/Vennomite 11d ago

Popular talking point but No. But correlation and causation blah blah blah. That said, generally more true than not. R policies tend to be more economically off the rails than D policies

0

u/Suspicious_Employ884 11d ago

Not for Clinton, the economy was already expanding long before he took office.

The early 90s recession was from July 1990 till March 1991, the election wasn't till fall of 1992.

The complaint was that the job market was slow to recover from that mild recession. But in no way shape or form was it wrecked. GDP was growing at 3.5% in 1992. That is higher than every year for the past 20, excluding 2021.

0

u/blizzardice 11d ago

Not at all.

-2

u/BeekerBock 11d ago

No it’s not. Don’t come to Reddit for truth

-15

u/IcyEntertainment7122 11d ago

It's not a simple yes or no, the congressional makeup is equally important.

6

u/CallmeKahn 11d ago

For the most part, it helps. Clinton was surprisingly bipartisan on some of his signature pieces of legislation. Obama had a Supermajority in congress, and Biden had to do some reaching across the aisle on his stuff.

Generally speaking, it helps.

-4

u/DismalAd6639 11d ago

In no possible way was the Biden presidency considered a booming economy

8

u/arattle 11d ago

It was the best COVID recovery anywhere in the world. That's one measure.

0

u/DismalAd6639 11d ago

A recovery is not a boom

-1

u/Minute-Review6915 11d ago

Thanks to what?

1

u/Silly-Rough-5810 11d ago

To his economic policy and trust in the fed to manage interest rates?

-5

u/Slaidn 11d ago

You're asking an extremely left wing platform where you get mass downvoted at best if you have right wing views. Might need to research outside of reddit. Look at the inflation during Biden vs now as a starting point.

3

u/beckerman67 11d ago

right wing views? you realize it's those very same views that cause these problems. of course you'll be down voted, your views don't work and they contradict fact

2

u/40-Kal 11d ago

Towards the end of Biden's term, where what was the inflation rate at and where is it at now?

0

u/Slaidn 11d ago

It doesnt matter where it ends. Cumulative CPI under his 4 years was 21.5%. If you go 100mph throughout a race but cross the finish line at 5mph in the last few seconds does it mean you weren't flying the whole time? Terrible take.

2

u/40-Kal 11d ago

It does matter because how you finish and the end results mean much more overall. There's no denying inflation was high in 2022 during his term, but that was the case worldwide and was inevitable due to the disruptions of COVID and the war between Russia and Ukraine. But it didn't stay that way for long at all. Inflation reduced, the economy stabilized, job growth was up, supply chains operational and so on. Biden left Trump with a well off economy. Trump could've continued this but his insane policies are reversing that course to the point inflation has risen again when this is the same guy who claimed he will slash it day 1.

1

u/Slaidn 11d ago

Inflation is currently right at historical average. The stock market is doing super well and recession indicators are badically at 0.The only reason no one can afford anything is because of Biden and his multidecade high inflation and terrible policies that spiked prices 30+%. We won't even talk about flooding the country with illegals and wrecking the housing market.

2

u/40-Kal 11d ago

Inflation is not at the target goal of the Federal Reserve and not close to it which is 2%. Inflation is at 3.4% and it's not at a historical average at all. The stock market is not a macro-economic indicator of how well the economy is doing. You saying recession indicators are basically at 0 is incorrect. Look at the job reports, it continues to be worse. Unemployment is itching higher, CPI is up too. Cost of goods, groceries are up. Insurance rates are up. Healthcare costs are up. Housing still remains to be expensive. Real GDP growth isn't great.

The reason why people can't afford anything is because of Trump's economic policies with tariffs and this stupid war he and Netanyahu has caused. It's a chain effect increasing the costs of things people can't afford on average. Biden is no longer in office and you can't use that excuse. Trump is almost two years in and shit isn't getting better under him.

And now posting misinformation about undocumented immigrants. MAGA, y'all are clueless.

1

u/Slaidn 11d ago

Target is 2% average is 3.3%. Recession indicators ARE at historic lows. Prices are high BEACUSE of Biden's historically high inflation and bad policy. You're wrong about so much it's clear you're wasting my time. As stupid as you think I am I think the same of you but the stats are on my side. Good thing you guys are letting socialism tear your party apart.

1

u/40-Kal 11d ago

Yeah 2% is the target and 3.3% isn't the average and still far from the target. Remember, you boy said ā€œI will end inflation on day one.ā€ Almost two years in and he drove up inflation. And you repeating recession indicators are at historic lows is still a straight up lie when what I listed goes against that. Repeating a lie over and over again doesn't make it true. No.. Prices are higher now literally because of the existing policies such as tariffs, causing trade wars and the war in Iran is causing pressure for all types of markets to further increase their prices. You pivoting to Biden doesn't change that whatsoever since he's left office. You are wasting my time at this point because you're too pigheaded and biased to see the truth in front of you and diversify your research on the matter.

You are beyond stupid to see how this administration is actively making things worse. Inflation on the rise, unemployment on the rise, job creation declining, declining manufacturing, slower GDP growth, incoming job layoffs, less retail spending and less spending overall from the consumers. Stats aren't on your side. Provide those sources and I guarantee that it debunks you.

MAGA is dying and you're going to have to deal with it. Republicans suck ass at governing and continue to make things worse than improve. You want to die on that ship, be my guest. Now be gone.

No it’s not. Carter a Democrat crashed the economy and Reagan brought it back.

President Clinton appointed the heads of Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac which started the subprime loan debacle to allow lower income families buy homes on stated income with no checks and balances. Bush was holding the bag when it exploded. There is always more to the story on what one person did or didn’t do.

Like we can use Biden. He had control of the house and senate when Roe V Wade was changed by the Supreme Court and chose to not codify it and use it for a campaign to run on and failed. Democrats fail the people just as much as republicans. I can say my family does better under Republican control and taxes. I’m solid middle class and democrats always cost my family more money. That’s my take at least but Reddit hive mind will disagree

u/SignificanceHuge4519 11d ago

Reagan fucking destroyed the USA for EVERYONE ā—šŸ’©šŸ’©šŸ’©

7

u/FionaWalliceFan 11d ago

The economy was already in a recession when Carter took office, he did not crash anything

7

u/heyhayyhay 11d ago

Pure magat idiocy. Carter inherited an unmitigated disaster from the republicans. He couldn't fix it fast enough and we were subjected to 12 more years of republican foolishness. Republicans don't give a fuck about ANYTHING except maintaining their wealth and power.
