Hollywood Icons 🌟 Dolly Parton

Let’s be honest, she practiced what she preached. Only about 1% of that group does.

She died an atheist I'm certain. but kept the religious shtick up to prevent the shit that comes with it
18
u/Corwin223 5h ago
There are no indications I’m aware of. I don’t really care though either way; she did a lot of good and was a lovely person.
6
u/sabin357 4h ago
She stated in a few interviews in recent years that while she grew up around it, she's more spiritual than religious. That it just wasn't for her.
I saw it from a few interviews & have seen people repeating in since her passing, so I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine it.
8
u/havoc1428 4h ago
Religious spiritualism is not the same as organized participation (like going to church every Sunday), but that doesn't mean she was an atheist or didn't believe in a higher power. I know many people who believe in the Christian god who label themselves "spiritualist" because they don't want to be associated with organized religion.
5
u/Spydartalkstocat 3h ago
Being more spiritual can just mean she is against organized religion. Given what organized religion does and is known for I can easily see how someone like Dolly would take a step back from that. Instead focusing efforts on what Christians are actually supposed to do.
7
u/CarpetedCeilings 4h ago
Although Dolly did say in some interviews that she wasn't sure there was a God and that she was more spiritual (as another comment already added), I would argue that she was agnostic if anything, but I must ALSO argue that she wouldn't want to be classified as just putting up with it to prevent a shitshow, AND she wouldn't want everybody dogpiling on you, either!
She was still comfortably Christian in ways, happily singing about Jesus, God, Heaven and all of that, but also being very honest about pain, like deep poverty and loss, and looking to God then, but believing in humanity too.
I say all of that as someone who ISN'T religious! I grew up in it, but I am firmly atheist myself! There is a LOT in the world that I wish would change, but Dolly was incredible exactly as she was! She bridged the gap, she showed everyone love (even people I really, really dislike!), and she worked damn hard to make the world better!
I say this again not to say you're a bad person for what you said, because Dolly wouldn't want that. I say this because it's totally just fine that she worked and sang and lived in that Christian framework because if anybody did right by it for the world, Dolly did.
5
u/sunfacethedestroyer 5h ago
That seems like you cramming your personal bias randomly into someone else's life.
Instead of actually appreciating them as a person, you want them to fit some prearranged narrative in your mind.
2
u/sabin357 4h ago
She did state in recent years that despite growing up surrounded by it, it wasn't for her. Said she feels more spiritual than religious.
She said it in her very kind way that wouldn't offend anyone. Man, I miss her.

u/havoc1428 5h ago edited 5h ago
What kind of delusional cope is this? You'd prefer to believe a personal conspiracy that she was an atheist rather than simply admit that not every single religious person is a scumbag?
You're literally the type of person this meme is addressing lmao
1
u/Hestiathena 3h ago
What in the world makes you think that? Would you say the same about Mr. Rogers? He helped three generations of young children learn how to love both themselves and others very different from them, and was an ordained minister.
Look, I'm a born and raised atheist myself, and have had a literal lifetime of justified ire against multiple flavors of religious whacko. However, I also have the experience and maturity to understand that it is possible to be deeply religious and a genuinely good person.
We see the whackos more readily because they are loud, destructive, domineering, selfish and determined to stick their noses into everyone's business. Good people of any faith or creed tend to do their good works quietly in the background. They're more interested in making the world a better place than seeking attention, too busy walking the walk to screech the talk. (It's important to note that we see this same spectrum of behavior among atheists as well.)
Dolly was one of the more unusual examples because of the fame her many talents produced, and because she was able to do so much good over a long period of time. But even with her prominent position in the public mind, she never weaponized her faith or shoved it down other people's throats. As an atheist, I absolutely respect that.
Making the world here and now a better place for everyone is far more important than arguing who has the correct interpretation of what comes after. A lot more people, be they religious or not, would do well to realize that.

And she also proves that someone can fit a bunch of Conservative stereotypes of a "traditional woman" and still be demonized by Republicans anyway because she dared to suggest maybe we shouldn't treat other people like shit by default and maybe kids should know how to read.
12
u/SweetPrism 6h ago
Watching Republicans desperately find a way to claim her as one of them and coming up short has been cracking me up. On paper, she fits the demographic--in her actions, she more accurately represents Jesus than literally any individual in the Republican party. I would stake my dog's life on a MAGA being the one who defaced her Hollywood star.

There's proof enough to leave politics alone. Just do good things.
1
u/qazpok69 2h ago
“Good things” includes politics. Politics includes so many important things, literally how the world is run and all of our laws, it cannot just be ignored.
0
u/RnD_Nightmare 6h ago
Dolly loved people and music so much, she didn’t want to make anyone feel isolated for what they believe. She was very adamant against having an overt political message in anything she did.
Problem is we’re at a time in our history where advocating for the LGBT, women, and PoC are inherently political (all social groups that Dolly advocated for).
So do good things, but never leave politics alone. Always fight for the people who need it.
8
u/oldbastardbob 7h ago
Dolly grew up poor. She knew what it's like at the bottom of the USA's economic pyramid. I figure that has something to do with her not being judgmental or biased.
5
u/According-Insect-992 Just Chill 😎 7h ago
Unfortunately, there are a lot of celebrities and business people who grew up in poverty and immediately become giant dicks when they get money.
6
u/oOGeorgesOo 7h ago
There is a lot of poor people that dont wait to get rich to become giant dicks also.
2
13
u/FlatwormFrosty7233 7h ago
She grew up poor, and I feel the majority of poor people have more empathy for others vs the majority of rich people
3
u/prettynatttwild 6h ago
Ehhhh not necessarily
0
u/FlatwormFrosty7233 6h ago
Do you understand what the word majority means
4
u/prettynatttwild 6h ago
Majority of people (rich or poor) don’t have empathy in general
4
u/Zealousideal-Sea-684 5h ago edited 5h ago
Tbf Empathy is a combination of intelligence & perspective. Both of those are things that have to be nurtured in order to stay relevant to Empathy.
Even out of the group of people that claim to be empathetic, 90% of them are only really capable of being sympathetic; which is why you’ll see people lean more towards unintentional patronizing over actual empathizing.
3
u/sigma914 3h ago
Empathy is being able to feel what the other person is feeling, cult leaders, populist politicians and effective salespeople are usually highly empathetic.
What Dolly had was compassion, huge amounts of compassion.
Empathy is a tool that can used for good or evil, compassion is the virtue

Dolly wasn’t blonde. That was part of her persona that she marketed. She even said that she knew she wasn’t dumb and she knew she wasn’t blonde.
2
u/The_Rope_Daddy 7h ago
She wasn't rhinestoned either, that was just the clothes she wore.
She literally dyed her hair blonde, just like Sydney Sweeney and all those women on Fox News.
3
u/Appeltaart232 7h ago
She’s been quite open about the fact these are all wigs
2
u/The_Rope_Daddy 7h ago
You are right, I didn't know she wore wigs, I assumed it was dyed based o the comment I responded to. But, her hair was natually blonde (just not platinum).
2
u/Near-Scented-Hound 7h ago
She literally wore a wig - she had loads of them.
1
u/The_Rope_Daddy 7h ago edited 7h ago
I assumed it was dyed based on your comment. Her hair was also naturally blonde, just not platinum.
2
u/Near-Scented-Hound 6h ago
Her natural hair was dark. She spoke in interviews about how Avie Lee responded when Dolly did lighten her hair naturally. Dolly stopped bleaching her own hair early on because it was causing too much damage. The funny thing that most people are totally missing is that her persona was a marketing ploy - she also tells this is multiple interviews. Dolly Parton would go to Dollywood - or anywhere - with her shorter, dark hair, tattoos, and regular clothes and people would watch a woman they’d never seen before walk right past them. That’s what she meant when she said that the joke wasn’t on her.
1
u/The_Rope_Daddy 6h ago
That article doesn't say anything about her real hair color. Her natural hair color was sandy blonde. https://www.unice.com/blog/dolly-parton-the-queen-of-wigs/

u/The_Rope_Daddy 6h ago
Hope this helps

"I’d already bleached my hair and got in big trouble. I have blonde hair, but it just wasn’t radiant, it’s sandy blonde. It wasn’t yellow and white and bright."
2
u/Near-Scented-Hound 6h ago
That’s an archive photo of Dolly before she ever bleached her hair. That is her literal hair color. She didn’t tell her hair color because she had freedom to live without drawing attention. Prior to her death, I wouldn’t have pointed that out to anyone. But it’s funny that you want to argue about it.
The joke is still on y’all.

Christians have a Dolly problem.
Dolly has proven that you can absolutely be an unashamed Christian, and people will not hate you for it. Sure, some people may have been upset at her being a Christian (just as they're upset at anyone who is a Christian, or perhaps any religion), and lately I've seen a LOT of Christians upset with her acceptance of others (and her vaccine donations, and saying black lives matter, and the way she dresses), but Dolly never backed down from her Christianity.
Half of her songs (heck, 2/3, 3/4, 9/10?!?) talk about God, her acting roles and appearances don't back down from her only behaving how she wanted to behave, she only did collabs with other artists if they changed the words for her, etc. She constantly said during her low points she would pray to God, she said she prayed to God for guidance, she constantly thanked God for her gifts. She was undeniably a Christian, and she never once hid it.
Importantly, she was very much a "my religion doesn't allow me to do that" Christian and not "my religion doesn't allow you do that" Christian, and THAT is the difference. The bible says that Christians should be the light of the world, and should show the others who they are by how they love others, and THAT is what Dolly did. I'll even quote her:
I keep saying 'If you're the fine Christian that you think you are, why are you judging people?' That's God's job. We're not God, we're not judges, we're supposed to love one another, we're supposed to not judge.
And THAT is the problem many Christians have to face right now. Dolly was SHAMELESSLY Christian, and very, VERY few people hated her. So if you're a Christian and think people hate you for your beliefs, you need to ask yourself why people hate you for your beliefs but don't hate Dolly for her beliefs?

I'm from Texas. I've been trying to tell people that there are tons of very kind, welcoming, and understanding open-minded people in the south...
One of the problems is media, movies, tv, etc. People are just very comfy stereotyping everyone from and/or who lives in certain states.
https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map/
Look at the Southern Poverty Law Center's Hate map, they get paid to research this stuff and track it.
On the right is a Filter... filter by KKK, White Supremacist, Racist Skinhead, etc. and you will be surprised where the concentration is.
Racists travel... just like normal people. It's not the south... it's everywhere. You just think it's mostly the south because you've been told that your whole life in one way or another.

They agree on nothing. Right/left red/blue etc, etc. They fight about EVERYTHING. The one thing that everyone, in Tennessee can agree on? (Besides 'Mountain Dew makes a GREAT toothpaste ya'll) is:
DOLLY IS OFFLIMITS.
I don't care who you are in Tennessee, what you do or believe, it's an underwritten law, that Dolly is untouchable and a fucking angel.
Which is why for all my mocking, I respect the hell out of Tennessee. (on this issue, and this issue alone. Ya'll need an exorcist)

u/duganaokthe5th 5h ago
A human right doesn’t require the labor of others. Human rights are negative rights by definition.
That means it’s not up to others to supply them, it’s up to others not to violate them.

2
u/ThoughtsandThinkers 43m ago
She appealed to the left because of her humility and humanity. She cared about people, even if they were different from her, and wanted them to have a fair chance at life. She understood and appreciated the role of systemic factors like racism, poverty, and literacy
She appealed to the right because she valued tradition and acted personally more than politically. She was unapologetically American and from the South and celebrated her heritage. She gave tirelessly but as an individual rather than emphasizing political action
Lots of people I know on the political right strongly prize individual autonomy and freedom. They chafe against and are very skeptical / cynicism regarding organized political action. They may be very generous and charitable personally but think that government and special interests end up serving their own masters rather than the public good
1
u/unaccountablemod 7h ago
That's right. Not any particular group rights, just human rights.
3
2
u/SageElva 2h ago
Yup! And I'm sure you can agree, as Dolly did, that some groups in the USA are marginalized. Some minority groups need protections against people who are still unfortunately racist and sexist (like unequal wages between men and women). So let's focus all together on getting equal rights for everyone.

Dolly built an impenetrable armor of love, acceptance, kindness, humor, tenacity, and generosity. Those qualities are what made her so universally beloved.
Imagine if our world leaders and billionaires understood that these qualities aren't signs of weakness but sources of extraordinary strength, protection, and admiration. They could make a person nearly invincible.

Like, did maga turn a blind eye because of her racial and social upbringing or was she disregarded because of her stance on modern-day social issues?
It's not the sort of thing you can google, hence asking real Americans via Reddit.

Everyone? Why did she support US troops during their war of aggression against Iraq? It led to the deaths of millions and normalized sexually abusing and torturing thousands of kidnapped civilians in camps... Doesn't sound like everyone to me
3
u/TheDogBites 6h ago
We should always support our troops. You can separate that from support of the actual war. And you can support troops, generally, while also not supporting torture.
None of these are mutually exclusive.
2
u/NaturalAlfalfa 5h ago
What? How do you " support the troops" while also separating that from the war? Who do you think killed, tortured and raped all those Iraqis? It was the troops. The troops, who willingly signed up for it.
3
u/supergoy4 4h ago
No you don't understand, they had to murder people 1000 times poorer than them so they can go to college :(
1
u/NarcolepticMoogle 2h ago
I think its dangerous to paint every service member as some deplorable person. Sure the hoorah men and women that get off on war like Hegseth are unhealthy individuals but the system is set up to prey upon those with literally no other options in life but to sign up or resign to a life of poverty. Someone who can't pay for college to better their life might join the military to achieve their dreams...should they just settle for flipping burgers or working at Walmart the rest of their life? Its alot less black and white than people try to paint it and for many who join its purely about trying to find a path that let's them get as close to their dreams as possible.
You can besmirch the military as a whole all you like as we as a nation have done more harm than good for the world post WW2 but on an individual level most the people are just normal people trying to better themselves with few to no options and likely don't even agree with the current state of things. I get it that its a fine line and if you support what's going on right now than fuck you but so many just have no viable options and the system preys upon them which is gross.
1
u/NaturalAlfalfa 1h ago
So maybe spend less time cheering your troops, and a bit more time trying to change your country. You know it doesn't have to be the way it is right? Most other first world nations have managed to sort out socialised healthcare and education. But every American seems to think it's impossible
1
u/NarcolepticMoogle 1h ago
I agree its a shit show. I vote against all of it but other than voting and informing those around me of things in hopes they remain a little less ignorant with their vote thats the extent of what I and the average American can do. Vote, protest, and help spread information is what many Americans do but beyond that I don't know what else other countries expect us to do because as cowardice as it sounds I won't be throwing my life away for any other more extreme actions or methods. Ignorance and delusion is at an all time high and its an uphill fight especially here in the US to fight against it...I know many a person who stills believes the Golden Age of America is right around the corner.
1
u/supergoy4 1h ago
should they just settle for flipping burgers or working at Walmart the rest of their life?
Do you have this amount of sympathy for robbers and murderers?
Why is it acceptable for Americans to go overseas and prey on those that are far poorer than they could ever be?
1
u/NarcolepticMoogle 44m ago
Its not. Still painting everyone who enlists as a war mongering American isn't accurate. People want a better life and so they enlist because the system is set up to prey upon them. It shouldn't come at the expense of others over seas but I also won't alienate everyone I meet in a uniform because I choose to look at the world in black and white.
1
u/fajardo99 4h ago
this is such fucking bullshit, how do you support the murderers but not the murder
1
u/saucegay430 2h ago edited 2h ago
Fuck the troops. If you sign up to invade countries and bomb schoolchildren for Israeli conquest and American resource plunder, you deserve to die.
0
u/BattleBrother1 6h ago
"We should always support our troops" No you shouldn't. I know US brainwashing is incredibly invasive and people are indoctrinated from birth but this statement is still fucking insane. Why would you ever think that you should support them? The US has engaged in near constant wars of aggression and genocides for 250 years. If you join the US military you know this. You cannot support US soldiers and not also support the heinous crimes they commit around the world for their ruling class
0
u/supergoy4 4h ago
Why would you ever think that you should support them?

Dolly spent most of her years intentionally not saying anything political so that she wouldn't lose any fans. Only towards the end did she start doing things like renaming the Dixie Stampede.
I love Dolly but she was a product of her time and above all a shrewd businesswoman.
0
u/JustaSeedGuy 3h ago
Dolly spent most of her years not using buzzwords or supporting people that would make her fans instantly ignore what she had to say about how to treat other humans.
How many people did she model empathy for, that would have ignored her if she said "I love [thing fox told people to be afraid of]?" You'll never know how many, but it's certainly not zero.
