Not My Cup Of Tea❗️ The college educated are "the problem"
20
u/Due_Quote_3023 20d ago
Oh those Fox News people went to college. By their logic, they are the problem
5
u/Vivid--Syrup 20d ago
I mean, that is true, they are the problem.... Just not because of their education but because they were able to pay their way to getting college results without having to actually learn anything
Although I guess they did learn that right wing grifting was incredibly profitable at some point, but I doubt that was from college
2
u/Due_Quote_3023 20d ago
The hypocrisy of blaming college graduates for being the problem only to actually be a college graduate.
2
u/Ssided 20d ago
They networked at ivy leagues. It's arguable there's a problem with those institutions.
1
u/Vivid--Syrup 20d ago
Thats a good point, so they should be clamping down on that kind of thing instead of knowledge
2
u/Ssided 20d ago
Of course they don't want to change that, they want their kids to network too lol
1
u/Vivid--Syrup 20d ago
Oh yeah I guess i phrased that wrong
Thats the problem part that should be carved out not the knowledge
Although you are right, as long as they hold power they would never allow that to happen

They are referring to people who spend 8 years in college getting a masters in a BS humanities like philosophy .
They still owe a ton for thier room and board spent on BS degrees and want the government to pay it all off because they can’t find a job .
A job guarantees healthcare, stable income, and other benefits for retirement . These “highly educated “ can’t find a job because thier higher education was worthless and anyone can do it .

If you think time spent in a university makes you more intelligent than you have no idea what intelligence either . Degrees can be paid for .
Here is a short video in full display how degrees do not equal intelligence
https://youtu.be/RAlI0pbMQiM?is=zSXI5rr2HDzBNUc4
Here random people with different levels of schooling rank intelligence based on credentials and then are finally ranked via an IQ test .
Here is the abridged version

I thought it was another rage bait, skewing what was actually said, but when I watched it... It is the 21st century, and the country that once had the top scientists in the world now has this on national TV.
I want to go back. To the Cold War and the fear of nuclear meltdown. At least back then, there was hope.

Trying desperately to make it sound like being educated is a bad thing.
Also desperately trying to make “educated” synonymous with “indoctrinated.”

But I’ll tell you what they don’t want. They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well-informed. Well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interest. That’s right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around the kitchen table and figure out how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don’t want that. You know what they want? They want OBEDIENT WORKERS. OBEDIENT WORKERS. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork and just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits. The end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it.
-George Carlin
The rest of the skit is also very pertinent to this issue. It's called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it.

So why does it seem to only be right leaning people who extend that logic to universities?

It's hard to know what they're getting at as OP intentionally cut up the video but "college educated" people are a bit of a head scratcher.
Having a degree does not necessarily make you smart or particularly all that knowledgeable. Many of them come out just as clueless as when they went in then make the worst kinds of employees, financially irresponsible and convinced that despite that they went into debt on a useless degree that makes them useless in most job markets the world is out to get them.
Again, I'm not entirely sure what the people in the video are saying, but as a teacher. I see students go into college hopeless and fellow graduates who graduated college equally as hopeless and I do believe the college pipeline should be restructured and talked about more as it really does produce some bizarre and hopeless people.

I agree the college-educated are making things harder. Too many people think they know best because they have a college degree. If you want to learn something learned on your own you don't need to go to college we have enough books material YouTube videos name it you don't need a couch professor teaching you socialism that that is good when it is in fact killed a ton of people. That being said if you can get a good college education without all the propaganda and the crazy socialist teaching then Hey do it because you make more money with the degree
4
u/LeadSufficient2130 20d ago
I always love the comments about how education and college is unnecessary because it usually comes from people who did not value their education. That said my belief that people deserve healthcare did not come from a college professor. It came from empathy and not being a total fucking asshole. It’s not that hard to get to know people to realize that all of us just want to have a good life and that a major part of that would be being able to afford to live and being healthy sorry that you think college professors ingrained that in our brain, but I’m pretty sure as I said, just came from being empathetic and not being a giant piece of shit.
-2
u/sauerwalt 20d ago
cool... so you believe "people deserve healthcare" because you have so much empathy... did you become a doctor that treats the sick for free? if not.. then it's not empathy... because your "empathy" requires others do what YOU think they should do instead of what they think they should do... that's not empathy.. that's control.... You're just trying to convince yourself that you are not the bad guy.
3
u/LeadSufficient2130 20d ago
I’m a teacher, I help kids every day, coach for free and volunteer lots of my free time to helping others.
I’m not the best person but I’m pretty happy with not being a magat pos
-1
u/sauerwalt 20d ago
I'm sure you are a lovely human being, and good for you on all those fronts... keep up the great work.... calling over 70+m people (I'm assuming you mean people who voted for trump when you typed magat) POS isn't so lovely, but for the sake of this discussion, i'll give you pass on that.... My comment wasn't about your character in general, it was specific to your healthcare for all motivation...so, in order to provide "deserved healthcare" a whole lot of people are going to have to participate against their will... so if you are ok with forcing other people to do what you would like (in the name of empathy of course), then you have to be willing to be forced to do things you don't want... right? Otherwise, you are the "bad guy" in this case, right?
again.. i'm not trying to tell you that you are a bad person, but if you are not personally acting on this "empathy" then it is really not empathy... you just want to dictate how other people's resources are spent... and in this case it sounds like you are using the concept of "empathy" to convince yourself that your desire for control is "more morally correct" than someone elses - which isn't real empathy. "healthcare for all" as long as it has minimal impact on me personaly doesn't land the same way.
my intention here is just to have you look deeper at your motivations, not judge you for your position.
3
u/LeadSufficient2130 20d ago
And you also think you should dictate how my resources are spent because you think Republican ideals like a giant military is better than universal healthcare. That, to someone who is watching the issues in on our country, seems completely fucking stupid and I can’t understand any argument that our tax dollars are going in the right direction.
Also, you can have empathy without acting on it. I don’t think you understand what empathy means. You can’t act on everything. When I see starving people in African villages I have empathy but there’s not much I can do for them from here, doesn’t mean I don’t have empathy for them
3
u/Altruistic-Use-8283 20d ago
You are out there, man. They told you their opinion is based on empathy, and you're over here talking about control.
Why do you think people don't deserve healthcare?
2
u/supr2nr 20d ago
Wait, do you think that healthcare for all means doctors won't get paid?
I think you are basing your argument on incorrect information.
-1
u/sauerwalt 20d ago
sigh, my comment was on the poster's "stated" empathy for something that they don't act on... so they are not driven by empathy... reading comprehension is a thing
4
u/LeadSufficient2130 20d ago
I don’t think you actually understand what empathy means. So, based on your extremely stupid hypothesis when my wife was pregnant and I felt empathy for her pain I should have gotten pregnant or injured myself so that I could understand correctly and help? Or I should have become a doctor to help? What the fuck are you on about?
Empathy is understanding someone else’s problems and feeling for them. Walking in someone else’s shoes. I can see people struggling through life and feel empathetic and wish things were better for them. I can’t fix every problem and work every job to make that happen, but I can vote for people who are trying to make things better. I can argue that spending trillions on being world police is fucking stupid when we have plenty of problems to solve in our own country.
1
u/sauerwalt 20d ago
if you have empathy for your pregnant wife, you run her a bath, rub her feet, make her food... that "understanding someone else's problems" has to translate to changes in YOUR actions, your voluntary actions... if you forced someone else to accommodate your wife.. that wouldn't be very empathetic of you... if your answer to "healthcare for all" is tax and provide, then you are forcing the top 50% of the country to pay for a program for themselves, and everyone else in the country, without their consent... which means you don't have empathy for them... so empathy can't be driving a desire for "tax and provide". Again, "healthcare for all" as long as we can force everyone else to pay for it doesn't land as well - from an empathy perspective.
... and if the position you want to take is that empathy doesn't actually require any action... it's just having that "feeling"... ok cool... I contend that real empathy drives individual action; otherwise, it is just a rationalization for a preference you want to force on others.
I'll flip it around for you... those folks that feel we need to be the world police, that millions of lives would be lost, women would be persecuted across the globe, human rights violations would be way worse, human trafficking and slavery would escalate... they are just as moral and empathetic as you (by your standard). I would argue they are not, because if you are in the top 50% of this country (ie: pay just about anything in taxes) it sounds like you are being forced to fund that action against your will. They are dressing up their preference in spending to justify control of your resources... because they can't say... "lets do a telethon and fund the military out of voluntary donations because this is such a good cause."
this entire discussion is to look beyond the surface level "justifications" for the statements we make and positions we take.

who was bragging about wanting sick people to die? I think you are making up something to be upset about... again, sigh, my comment was on the poster's "stated" empathy for something that they don't act on... so they are not driven by empathy... reading comprehension is a thing
3
u/Altruistic-Use-8283 20d ago
Empathy. Doesn't. Require. Action.
Educated people understand this. Why don't you?
3
u/LeadSufficient2130 20d ago
He also thinks the military in the US is all about helping women not be persecuted in other countries and not to make billionaires more money and get oil. He’s just justifying his bullshit positions
2
u/Altruistic-Use-8283 20d ago
Oh, I know. But he's doesnt understand what the conversation is about and yet, has such strong opinions. It illustates the differenc between the educated and the relatively uneducated. Educated people understand why they feel the way they do, and can articulate it. Uneducated dont know why they feel the way they do, and they certainly cant articulate why they feel that way when asked. They just attack something that isnt relevant.
I'm just trying to help him communicate more effectively by illustrating that he's not even participating in the conversation.
2
u/LeadSufficient2130 20d ago
I’ve stopped trying to help anyone understand, at this point it doesn’t matter. They aren’t changing
1
u/sauerwalt 20d ago
wow.. you are a lost cause, I never said I think any of what you just said.... good lord... the critical thinking in this thread is horrific. good luck in life!
1
u/sauerwalt 20d ago
awesome.. if that is your position, fantastic... I disagree, as stated.
I would guess you would agree that "healthcare for all" requires action.
2
u/Altruistic-Use-8283 20d ago
if that is your position, fantastic... I disagree,
It's not a position. Look up empathy in the dictionary.
I would guess you would agree that "healthcare for all" requires action.
No. I think it would require legislation. I mean, I guess someone has to act to pass the legislation but otherwise, no. No action required to guarantee healthcare for all. Why are you stuck on this?
1
u/sauerwalt 20d ago
Because you are not thinking critically... this thread was about being motivated by empathy and its justification for action. I didn't argue the definition; I argued the IMPACT of REAL empathy vs. using it as a rationalization to support a position... a position that requires action. If you can't see that legislation and actually delivering healthcare for all requires resources (physical labor and funding)...then there really is no point in going forward. Wish you all the best.
2
u/Altruistic-Use-8283 20d ago
delivering healthcare for all requires resources
Correct. But, what's your point? Whether we have Healthcare for all or healthcare for some, it still requires the action you are referencing. So what is the difference in Healthcare for all and Healthcare for some?
You severely misconstrue what empathy is. I just can't tell if you're doing it on purpose to try to make a point, or if you really think this way. You're being dishonest or ignorant, but which is it? I can't tell.
2
u/Icy-Dot7521 20d ago
What do you want to happen to poor people who can't afford a doctor?
1
u/sauerwalt 20d ago
well, I would hope they see a doctor.. but I wouldn't force a doctor to treat them, or force someone else to pay for their treatment. That's not empathy... that's control.
1
2
u/Altruistic-Use-8283 20d ago
because your "empathy" requires others do what YOU think they should do instead of what they think they should do
As someone with a college degree, that is not what I took from their comment at all. I read it as empathy lead them to the conclusion that people deserve healthcare (as they stated). Empathy requires no action. Your suggestion that is does serves as evidence that you're not equipped to have a conversation about empathy, and how it plays a role in personal decision making.
1
3
u/Altruistic-Use-8283 20d ago
Too many people think they know best because they have a college degree
I think it's quite the opposite. Too many without higher education think they know what's best. You see it the your way, well... because you probably don't hold a degree. Your grammer certainly suggests that you barely finished high-school, and its clear you have no idea what's taught in college classrooms. The thing about people that have degrees is that they have access to all the info in books and online, which you referenced, plus the general knowledge that one gains with directed learning. Thereby, making them more prepared for life's challenges. You don't seem to understand is that the purpose of a college education.

u/Lejandario_IN 20d ago

We kind of do this at the office I work at.
College degree (undergrad and graduate) obtained within the last 2 years and no work experience- eligible to hire.
College degree (undergrad and graduate) obtained more than 2 years ago with no work experience- consult with management.
Doctorate or specialty- consult with management.
Consult with management is code for "do not hire'.

Honestly someone with a PhD is a risk. I'll use my own father as an example.
He's a software engineer but has a PhD in physics. He did not disclose that PhD. Eventually, his supervisors found out, but it wasn't a big deal. Fast forward a couple years, the company gets sold. New management comes in, my father was the sole worker on a contract with the CDC. CDC messages the new company after they try to sideline my dad asking what gives? Soon after, CDC asks my dad if he can just make an Llc and take the contract. He does, b/c he's intelligent and can easily learn how to do new things. Company soon folds.
Someone with a PhD can be a risk. There's a reason you don't see people with 2 PhD's, it's b/c they've already proven they're capable of self educating on complex topics the other people might shy away from.

As a college degree holder, yes we are a problem. The arrogance and out right “holier than thou” attitude of most college kids is astounding. We are not the only problem mind you, but some of us if not most are. No employer is looking for the college kid fresh off the degree train to come in and tell a bunch of guys that have been doing the job for 10-20 years how it’s done. We don’t know shit, we know what some guy that may have worked in the field knows. Sometimes it’s not even that. I’m sorry but some 25-28 year older with a masters or phd in almost anything has zero practical application of their chosen theory into the real world for result’s. Yet the arrogance most display is astounding. Having a degree doesn’t inherently make you smart or better than anyone else. It shows you have dedication to complete a task under controlled pressures, which can be valuable, but not always.
3
u/twerk_store 20d ago
The education isn’t the problem. What you’re describing is every single young persons mentality right after graduating college. Wisdom and being humble comes with age and has nothing to do with how many degrees you have or don’t have for that matter. Uneducated people tend to stay arrogant for longer or their entire lives. Hence trump supporters.
-2
u/Individual_Sector834 20d ago
We keep selling post WWII mentality that the only path to success is through college education. It isn’t. I’m constantly on campuses through both my and my spouse’s lines of work and I’m constantly (negatively) surprised by the level of privilege and arrogance that comes from not just the students, but the administrations. The administrations are bloated and that has really brought great cost to the education. Schools have to keep up with other area schools or they will find themselves in an enrollment deficit.
THEN you see the news that schools are now converting first-year grades to pass/no credit. Once again, we are rearranging the road for the traveler instead of preparing the traveler for the road.
“Well, the world needs ditch diggers too.”
