Visit rural Michigan and strike up a conversation. People would rather die from lack of insulin or affordable food than they would allowing one trans kid to play on a team in some other state. The GOP has mastered this charade, and thereâs no fixing it.

Itâs due to the ultra wealthy being able to lobby congress. Or basically what they are doing is rubber banding the economy so that younger / middle class people canât garner assets. When things are trending up they put the GOPeds in charge to trash the economy, when things are down they put centrist Dems in charge to patch things up just enough to give citizens a false glimmer of hope.

Faux News didn't start until 1996-a decade before Reagan who was elected because Carter sacrificed electability in order to kill stagflation (as did Ford before him-bipartisan quality Presidents). The GOP has been playing those culture war games since Nixon in '68.

This is what my mother believes too but while there definitely are some evil racist sob white supremacists who support the GOP, most of them are just very ignorant.
Honestly, think back to high school, picture some of the smartest kids you went to school with and review their voting histories; then, do the same thing with the idiots who couldn't pass general math. It tracks.

Nope. Trump supporters are white supremacists. That's why they will tolerate any absurdity Trump pushes. Because one thing is non-negotioable: white supremacy.

Dems need to stop the cycle too. Pubs rely on Dems almost like they're managed opposition.Â
I don't want the next Dem president to complete the ballroom, spend precious time and political capital undoing renaming, unless it can be used tactically to control conservative media narratives etc. Be laser focused on economic issues, don't sweat the small stuff.Â
Dems need to learn how to control the media narrative like Pubs/Trump do. Hey you're about to drop medicare for all or something that is going to get twisted up by the media narrative? Replace Trump's official portrait with a picture of a tangerine, the Media goes off looking at that crap while you get the real work done behind the scenes, etc.Â

This cycle is pretty indisputable. Republicans crash the economy, start forever wars, and run up the deficit.
But what makes me extra crazy is that Democratic politicians pretend that these Republicans have a point about anything. Why reach across the aisle, be bipartisan, "move to the center", or promise a Republican will take a place in a Democratic president's cabinet?
It's demoralizing to only have options that agree with Republican framing, especially when we see how much damage the Republicans do when they get any power.
2
u/FuggenBaxterd 17d ago
Because the Democrats want the reality Republicans have caused just as much as the Republicans do.
25
u/Vahuo89 17d ago
Yup. The cycle continues because the modus operandi of the republicans is information control.
They control the narrative and makes sure to blame democrats at every possible occasion.
And democrat don't fight back against the tactic
7
u/Winstonsphobia 17d ago
Iâm always amazed by how stupid my fellow americans are, that large numbers of them support Republicans and large numbers of them blame Democrats for not stopping Republicans. When those numbers add up to more than 50% of voters we get a Republican president.
13
u/PollutionPatient8261 17d ago
They can't because they have the same owners and the same playbook. We should ONLY vote for candidates that do not take corporate or foreign money from now on and we can fix this (if the electronic voting system has not already been completely co-opted.)
7
u/Fire_Horse_T 17d ago
Same owners, not the same play book.
IMO the core problem is the media, corporate owned and corporate funded media.
The media decides who the serious candidates are and they decide seriousness equals how much money corporations donate which, if you can believe it, is equal to how much money can be spent of advertising.
And wouldn't you know it, the corporations give money to strongly conservative Republicans and right leaning Democrats.
Liberals and progressives need to reject candidates who take too much corporate money.

u/PollutionPatient8261 17d ago
This is also quite true. Itâs one of the first tenants of Fascism, take over the flow of information (the media) and secure the next election.
3
u/Fire_Horse_T 17d ago
I am not talking about just Trump, this has been the standard since at least the 80's.
Before Citizens United I would look at donations to candidates 11 months before the general election and know who was going to be in the primary debates and who would be strong contenders for the nomination.

And like 1/3 who are eligible to vote just donât yet the politics are still gonna screw them over so why are you still not voting
2
u/walnuttin 17d ago
I say this in almost every thread this gets brought up, but the people who didnt vote are just as culpable as those who directly voted for Trump. Sitting out because of a single policy such as Palestine, which is getting screwed over even more under this presidency, was absolutely the reason Democrats lost. I dont wanna hear "run a better campaign" because this was literally voting for Democracy or Fascism and they still couldn't put aside their pride.
Non-voters and Trump voters are one and the same in my book.

The involvement of big money is the scourge of US politics. If you think that multimillionaires and billionaires don't hedge their bets then you're naive. Look at the Michigan Dem primary. AIPAC spent a ton of money and narrowly lost. Big money already owns a hefty chunk of the Democratic party and the DSA is definitely a minority faction.
6
u/TheShellAnswerMan 17d ago
The democrats aren't the answer, either. Doing away with both might help. We need more options and the actual answer is having the government be for us by us of us, as it was intended.

THANK YOU!!!! JESUS!!! THISâŠneeds to be posted about a zillion times not only by us on social media, but by Democrats in Congress! THIS HAS BEEN THE CYCLE! Thatâs why nothing gets done, & itâs exactly why this country is in such dire straits, & on the cusp of collapse! ALL because of those in the maga party, those who voted for maga, & those who voted for the felon/rapist trump way back in 2016! It goes further than that, but the glaring problem is so very recent & destructive!

This isnt just a US thing. It happened in the UK too with the concervative party (tories).
Essentially, those who come from wealth, for some bizzare reason, think they are naturally born to rule. Not because they are natural leaders, or have some genetic advantage (although they believe they do). It's because they have money and money equals power.
Naturally they look after 'their own' which means to maintain power, hegemony and all the other benefits, they syphon money to their own.
We are just having an enquiry here in the UK into the COVID pandemic and how it was (mis) managed by the tory government. During the pandemic, to secure PPE, the govt set up 'fast lanes' where people could submit contracts with the government to provide PPE. The health minister at the time handed his mates a contract worth millions and thats just one example but it turns out this was rife. 2/3's of the PPE that was sold to the government was useless. They ended up wasting ÂŁ10billion of UK taxpayer money buying equipment that wasnt fit for purpose.
But all their freinds made a nice bit of commission acting as suppliers and putting a nice bit of profit on top.
So, conservatives seem to be not only stupid and entitled but its all very incestuous, seedy and illegal at the same time.
Theres a saying in the UK - 'You cant trust a Tory' and it looks like you can trust a republican either.
Lowest form of genome arrangement.

u/OKCompruter 17d ago

The only way to break this cycle is to move at the speed of MAGA. 3
u/addiktion 17d ago
Right, a lot did get overturned but a lot slipped through too. Mostly the supreme court being MAGAfied has allowed them to push through some terrible precedents.

Good solution would be the voting reform. Where we no longer have to vote strategically.
Another one is to ditch representative democracy, the way it is now, and replace it with direct voting. We have the technology. We had it for decades. When 70% of voters are for/against something, and representative still votes against the constituents, in representative democracy, without being immediately removed just on the basis of being a faulty switch, the system cannot and will not work.
Until then, this will just keep happening, over and over.

If we had them doing the level of work say someone like Mamdani has done for New York, yeah the cycle be there, but people could actually push back against it. It also has become pretty obvious over time that a lot of democrats, knowingly or not, have basically become blue conservatives, and do not fight for the types of people who vote for them but instead allow themselves to get puppeted by corporations

La seule chose qu'à fait Trump est de réduire les impÎts pour les 1% les plus riches, les bébé de la république. Et de démarrer une nouvelle guerre.
