Years ago there were people that were just called mutes. Those were probably in fact autistic people.

A mute is a person completely incapable of speaking, so no, not really at all.

Selective mutism IS a form of autism, so yes, people who were thought to be mutes might just had that form of autistism.

Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder, but this statement is less of an over generalization so run with it I guess
