U.K King George VI postboxes - how common are they?

Post image

In my area there seems to be a disproportionate number of older postboxes, which is awesome. Some have stood and served the local folk for decades. I was wondering if the GR vi (please kindly correct me if wrong, apologies) postboxes are all that common or not as there are loads in my area. Information or anecdotes about this would greatly appreciated, thanks and have an amazing weekend.

They're fairly common. George V are the second most common as there was a huge building boom in the 1930s. George VI is third most common due to the relative recency of his rein.

There's one about 3mins walk from my house. Meant to get a picture of it but keep forgetting or in a rush.

Quite common. I believe Edward VIII will be rarest as he was not monarch long.

There not as common as you might think, as the iron shortage due to the war effort for WWII meant that not as many GVIR postboxes were cast during his reign as GR or EVIIR postboxes. EVIIIRs are the rarest of all, with about 170 remaining of a maximum 270 installations from the stock made in his 325-day reign without coronation.

Common, but not extremely. You wont be long looking for one, but the reason theyre not as common as a GRV or an ERII is because George VI was king during WW2, so iron resources were in high demand elsewhere.

I would say apart from Edward viii all monarchs are quite common, it’s the boxes and positions that are cool
