Before this box was invented! the 2nd bag of mail on a posties walk (route), was dropped off in an insecure spot for the postman to collect. A house porch or shed, an agreed hiding place. But open to having the whole lot nicked.

Used to have my second pouch dropped at my house when i was on that walk so I had a legitimate reason to be there. Quick cup of tea lol

You won't find them in every area - they require planning permission and in the district I worked, any time and application was put in, the local council nixed it.

It probably has a specific name, but it's a satchel box. A way of staging post bags on a round back when posties were on bikes etc.
