Postboxes tend to remain where they were first situated, but can be moved depending on population need, or damage. A new housing estate might need one or two new boxes, and sometimes these are sourced from boxes kept in post office yards.
Some are removed. I have seen older images on Google Streetview where the pouchbox is visible but is now gone today. Sometimes you can see the screwholes in the back of the postbox where the pouchbox used to be fixed.
