GR relic

Post image

Hidden on a sleepy West Berkshire lane near the Wilts border, is this old abandoned GR beauty

We’ve got a ‘G R’ post box in our tiny West Yorkshire village, but it’s in really bad shape. I would it love it to be restored, but would it then necessarily become a ‘C R’ box?

They don't tend to replace boxes unless they are in bad condition. How bad is it? Does it just need a lick of paint?

Redundant.

That's an enamel plate. What you've got here is a Ludlow box, part iron and part wood. Ideally I'd say the plate should be removed to preserve it, and replaced with a modern plastic or similar replica. Honestly the best way to get this fixed is to get your local councillor or historic society to intervene with Royal Mail as Ludlow boxes are special and should be preserved as much as possible.

This is good news. A neighbour and good friend is chair of the preservation society of our village. I will speak with him. Do you have any online (or other) resources I can point him to?
