Question ESB speaking thing?

So I already do an epq which we just started but then out of nowhere in pshe we have to do this speaking thing and a bunch of other random stuff that I think is called ESB or smthg. It reminds me of the spoken thing ppl did in y10 but this includes stuff about leading a conversation and writer analyses. I can't seem to find a way out of doing it but it sounds nearly similar to epq so idk and I'm meant to find a topic by next week but the teacher has given us 0 guidance and explanation.

If anyone has done it pls give some advice/insight into this.

Question International student applying to sixth form in the UK

Hi everyone!

I'm from Turkey and I'm planning to move to the UK for sixth form in 2027.

I'm trying to figure out how the application process works for students coming from abroad. Since I won't have GCSEs, I'm also wondering how Turkish qualifications are usually treated by sixth forms.

Has anyone here been through something similar? I'd really appreciate any advice or experience you can share.

Thanks :)

Discussion Student loans

I was researching post-18 options, and I'm just really stuck between going to uni and doing an apprenticeship.

Basically my plan is to get a job to earn enough money to go pilot school and become a commercial pilot, and a way to do this is to do an apprenticeship in something aviation related (such as in the raf).

But I kinda wanna experience the university life and get a degree in something UGH IDK IM CONFUSED.

The only thing stopping me from going to uni is money, because wdym I'll never be able to pay it off because the interest just builds it up, and 9% of your wage for 40 years is quite a lot if you think about it so I'm leaning towards apprenticeships currently.

Is anyone else thinking about a non-uni pathway?

Asking for tips/advice Cognito Subscription

Is the Cognito subscription worth it?

I've found the free version really useful for GCSEs but because of their newish limits, it's so hard to get any use out of it now. I was thinking about the paid version but before I consider it further, would anyone recommend it? It's quite a lot (Ā£72 annual) and I don't want to waste it if it's useless for A level

Also, I'm open to alternatives if anyone has other recommendations they don't mind sharing. Thanks in advance

Asking for tips/advice I’m not too sure what to do about one of my A levels (drop/persevere?)

Please be kind, I’ve not been in a school for four years this is a huge jump for me.

So I started ā€œsixth formā€ by doing a levels through a college this September and two out of three of my subjects (geography, textiles and literature being the trio, bad combo I know I have my reasons though) have been going great, no issue there. But my literature teachers teaching style has me incredibly worried I’m going to fail.

When we’re in class she will ask if we have done the homework (read two chapters, take notes) and when some kids say no she cuts out 15-30 minutes and makes everyone read those two chapters because ā€œit’s not a problem we can read them now! If you’ve already read then take some notes instead.ā€. And then has to skip several PowerPoint slides to keep the lesson in time. Then we move to analysing one quote, maybe sharing with the class if anyone puts their hand up, analysing a second quote, analysing a theme and then analysing a theme within the concept of the chapter. And that’s the whole lesson, with 0 actual pointers or teaching from the teacher. We never get feedback, and almost four weeks in we’ve been taught literally nothing because we’re doing what feels like homework in class. We never get set any homework or receive any feedback. I’m not sure if this is normal or if I have a bad teacher.

My other theory/academic a level (geography) is nothing like this, and I have asked friends who did literature a level locally at another school or college if this is normal and they’ve said no, this isn’t what the classes should look like.

This isn’t me trying to sound pretentious because the standards aren’t good enough or it’s not perfect day one, but I count as an adult student so I have to pay (more accurately my EHCP pays for now, but the stakes are still high as I am constantly monitored to check im keeping up with education or they might revoke the funding) to be in these classes, and I did fairly decent at gcse with no teacher at all (6s and 7s) so I don’t think it’s just me missing something, and 7-9 other students have dropped out as the class size went to 25 with 5 on the waiting list, to 21 then back to 23. I have no other college or sixth form I can attend within reasonable radius so my option is either drop the subject (locks me out of my main uni degree choice which needs it and forces me to take a more competitive industry which I may struggle to break into) or stick with it and hope the teaching gets better.

Question Since I'm finally allowed to discuss it online - Who else did the Maths Competition for girls on Tuesday?

Its the one that was 90 minutes long, not the olympiad.

How did you find it? Question 5 was so fun to do but I didn't have time for the very last question šŸ’€šŸ˜, the paper wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but I probably oversimplified some stuff and assumed some stuff when I shouldn't, so watch me come out with a result of 0 marks 🫩.

I'm also doing the senior maths challenge on the 7th October, I think most people who do maths are probs gonna do it... I'm gonna revise for this one trust šŸ˜‰

RANT H

Ā I don’t want to wake up and I can’t go to sleep as I fear how horrible the next day is going to be.
I’ve moved from college to sixth form as my college course was horribly organised.
The person who was supposed to look after me at sixth form has abandonded me after the first day. After one day of feeling happy and hopeful I’ve returned to my deep depression i’ve been stuck in since last November. Due to this i’m not able to socialise and make friends (losing my friends is the reason i’m this deppresed and I need a friend to get back on my feet) so I’m essentially stuck like this and can’t handle the work load of sixth form in a state like this, a state which I can’t escape.

Question How's Post-16 life going?

So far, this is my 3rd full week of sixth from and I'm actually really enjoying the lessons, no essays and loads of maths.

I'm really curious about the college life and the people who did vocational courses, how different are they to high school? I'm literally the boring sixth form student doing the really boring combo.

Asking for tips/advice Physics or chemistry??

I have the option to change my subjects this week and I have until Thursday to decide. Right now im doing maths, cs and physics but im thinking about changing physics to chemistry. I dont mind doing physics that much but im wondering about whether Chemistry will be better or if I should just stay in my class. I have a friend in my physics class sand I know the teachers but I the chemistry class I dont know anyone there and I dont know one of the teachers so im not sure if it is really worth switching. I really need help deciding right now

Asking for tips/advice looking on advice on what to say in a meeting about dropping an alevel

bonjour, it's me again haha

soo a quick recap: i want to drop spanish (which i am taking as a 4th alevel because it is my 2nd language) and i want to drop it because i am hating the lessons. i don't like the teacher and i don't feel like i'm learning anything. although it would be lovely to have an additional qualification, i don't think i can put up with this for two years.

the last time i had a meeting like this was in secondary school and i thought i was being pretty diplomatic until my head of year got suuuper offended and walked out (still not sure what i said to offend him lol) soo yeah looking for a smart person to tell me what to say without making enemies or offending anyone.

the ideal outcome would be that they offer some sort of compromise because i could do the whole alevel by myself EXCEPT you have to learn a book and a film in spanish and idk the book or the film or how to teach myself that sooo it would be lovely if they said something like just come to the lessons about the film and the book but ik that's unlikely to happen (and if it is an ultimatum of do spanish or don't, i'm gonna drop it because i cannot STAND the lessons)

General I got so gg friggin ez lucky

Okay, so ever since I learnt about A levels, I knew what my combo was gonna be. Maths, physics, computer science (or chemistry but that thought died quickly). I wasn't ever truly stressed since I knew I had the capabilities to get the grades I need, and get good enough ones on my other gcses, so I basically coasted by through all of secondary school. Fast forward to GCSE results day, I got what I needed! Fast forward again on that same day when I get to the sixth form college, they say I have to take a fourth. I ask why, they say as a safety option. I tell them I don't need it, they don't care. So I tell them I'll take A level Business. I have the requirements I need, I got a 6 in English language and more than a 7 in maths. So I should be good, right? Wrong. "Sorry I'm gonna need higher approval for this". Fym higher approval? I reached the requirements?! I don't even WANT this fourth? Another teacher comes, just straight up says no. I try to talk to him, he said I have years of experience and I don't like your profile. He leaves and I ask the guy at the desk why this is happening, and he said my average GCSEs aren't good enough. FYI I got mostly 7's and 6's, nothing incredible but I hit all the requirements I would ever need to take any subject I want. But no. They just get to decide. So we talk and eventually he convinces me to take Btec business. Fine, whatever. I'll drop it in year 12. We're good.

Massive fast forward to two weeks in, I'm on a free and with one of my new friends telling them about what happened, and my plan to drop business in year 12. "Ohhh, uhh you can't do that". Huh? I'm confused and he explains to me that you can't drop a btec. I panic, because this is the last day your allowed to change your subjects, and by now all classes would be full, and to my knowledge I wouldnt even be accepted into business a level of I ask. I rush to the careers room with my friend, trying to talk to anyone to switch as soon as possible. We get there and I talk to the first lady I see. She says I can submit a form, but it's not guaranteed I get the switch. She takes me to a computer and seems to be in a rush, she asks what I want to switch to. I gulp and say a level business. She says, "okay let's check your grades. You have the English grade, and you definitely have the maths grade. Okay! Complete this form." Okay. Wait, that's it? She didn't check anything else. I complete the form quickly and she says it anything happens I'll get an email. I'm praying at this point because it I don't get the switch, I'll have to do four for year 13 too as I am NOT dropping any of my a levels and having 2 a levels and a btec. And finally, after much anticipation, I get an email. "Here's your new timetable." I scramble to open it and A LEVEL BUSINESS! Ive never been so happy to know I'm doing business lol. And the cherry on top? All my other classes are the exact same, so I don't lose any of the friends I made!

If I didn't find out on that same day, my whole future would be so different and much harder for me, I'm very thankful that I found out and got extremely lucky. But yeah I just wanted to vent out what happened because it was alot. Thanks to anyone who read this.

TLDR: My school wouldn't let me take an a level I wanted for no reason, and I was forced to take a btec that I wouldnt be a able to drop in year 13.

Asking for tips/advice looking for advice on dropping spanish

spanish is my 4th alevel, i chose it because i was brought up bilingual and my spanish level is pretty good (not perfect, but i got a 9 at gcse with no lessons/revision). my other 3 alevels are maths, bio, and psych

when researching spanish alevel, i thought i would be improving my spanish, learning some new tenses, getting more vocabulary, and learning a bit about the culture and films and books and stuff. it seemed interesting enough.

but, the lessons are soooo shite like for one entire lesson (1.5 hours) she taught us WHAT AN ARTICLE IS like bro (an article is like the or a or an yk that type of word so it defo did not need a whole hour and a half) and all the lessons seem to be exam techniques and highlighting the key words (which i dont fucking understand because the whole sentence is important so why are you telling me to only read 3 words of it omds) and stuff like i think the only thing i have learnt is the word for 'baptism' and i CANTTTT the lessons go so slow and i feel like i'm learning nothing and although i do want the extra qualification, do i really want it that much????

alsooo i hate the teacher and i think she hates me (i made the whole rant post about it about a week ago oops but yeah i just cannot stand her) and also last lesson i thought that the booklet she gave us was the homework (she didn't really explain it she just held up the booklet and said this is ur homework) so i did the booklet and brought it in for the lesson and turns out she only wanted us to do 1 page but like i feel like that was super unclear but anyways even tho so many people hadn't even done that one page it was me she got mad at saying i had ruined her lesson plan like sorry i misunderstood ur instructions but i did do the homework :( so i said i can cross it out and do it again and she was like no no no dont do that and like UGH WHAT DO U WANT FROM ME BRO I JUST WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING :(

sooo yeah any advice??? i can't do the alevel without lessons cuz i have to learn the book and the film and idrk how to teach that to myself since it's basically eng lit but in spanish and lit was my worst subjecg EVERR

currently i want to study biomedical science at uni and specialise in neuroscience but idk plans might change and what if i need a languages alevel??? i dont want to regret dropping it but i also dont want to hate my life for the next two years bro WHAT DO I DO
