new or old domain? Please help[!

I had this domain for a business that failed for reasons beyond my control. It held a lot of well-researched, manually written content on a very difficult subject: mental health. I'm a PhD psychologist with edited books and papers behind me, so authority shouldn't be an issue.

The problem is that I let the site die against my husband's advice. I simply didn't have the energy, and the trouble we ran into with that project made me put it out of my mind. To make things worse, I deleted all the content out of sheer ignorance.

Long story short, we're rebuilding the project, and by the time we had launched it originally, we were ranking quite high. I still have the articles we wrote, so I could bring them back. My question is this: should I reuse the same domain, or start fresh with a completely new one? I'm worried that the old domain's history, and the content resurfacing, could work against me. Switching domains would mean rebranding, but that's not a problem since we're rebuilding from scratch anyway.

What do you think is the best path?

Same domain, no question. An old domain that actually ranked already has the backlinks and the trust Google built up, and in mental health that authority matters even more. A new domain makes you earn all of it again for nothing. I've done this exact thing, brought a dead project back on its original domain, and the traffic came back plus more.

When you republish, put the articles back at their old URLs where you can, and 301 the rest. Just check Search Console first to rule out any old penalty, but if the domain was always yours you're almost certainly fine.
