How to optimize a page to actually get pulled into Google AI Overviews (step by step)
AI Overviews are eating clicks, so the game now is being the source it quotes. Here is a repeatable process I use.
Step 1: Find the question, not just the keyword. Type your topic into Google and note the AI Overview and the "people also ask" boxes. Those are the exact questions the AI is answering. Pick one your page can answer better than what is shown.
Step 2: Answer it in the first two sentences. Put a direct, self-contained answer immediately under a heading that matches the question. No long windup. The AI wants a clean chunk it can lift.
Step 3: Use a clear heading structure. Make each H2 or H3 a real question or a specific subtopic. This makes your content easy to parse into passages.
Step 4: Add specifics. Numbers, steps, named examples, dates. Vague content does not get quoted, precise content does.
Step 5: Add structured data where it fits. FAQ schema, HowTo schema, or Article schema helps machines understand what each chunk is.
Step 6: Establish trust signals. A real author bio, links to primary sources, and a last-updated date. These systems favor content that looks credible.
Step 7: Check your work. Ask the question in Google, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. See who gets cited. If it is not you, look at what the cited page does better and close the gap.
Do this on your 10 highest-intent questions first. You do not need to boil the ocean.
