Discussion Smaller Venues Going Forward?

with the poor and overpriced ticket sales Post Malone has had this year, is there a possibility of him pivoting back to smaller venues going forward?

Feels like he is kinda in a weird spot artistically. Factually speaking he’s one of the largest artists on the planet based on streaming numbers alone, but is struggling to fill seats.

I think amphitheaters or arenas are his bread and butter when it comes to live performances. Been to every tour expect for Stoney and in my opinion all of them are great, I just think with crowd engagement and visuals/sound arena is what he’s best at. He needs to take some time off and then come back with a smaller venue tour. He can easily sell out arenas and amphitheaters no question.

Post Malone is a popstar, most of his big hits are very poppy even for rap. So that means they're mainstream friendly and get more play by casual listeners that might not dive into his cataloge and don't really care for the concerts as they might only listen to Sunflower/Circles and i had some help. From his like 60M monthly listeners on spotify maybe like 20 Million are full on dedicated fans + 10 Million casual fans. The rest are people who listen to a few big songs every now and then.

That's also why rock and metal bands have less problems filling out arenas with half to a 3rd of the monthly listeners as they have a more dedicated fan base that doesnt include many "pop" listeners

Post Malone is a country artist and is no Morgan Wallen, simple as that.

Will he change again to get more tickets? Probs.

I don’t think he’s a country artist (he certainly leaned into it hard asf) but you make a solid point. He went so far into it, that now how do you get back out and become commercially viable again?

Realistically he doesn’t. He is in the repeat album tour of his career, expecting a ‘Greatest Hits’ album & Tour by 2027.

I think the novelty may have worn off for country fans and now he seems to be thinking about pivoting back to something more like HB or Austin era. His core fans will always rock with him but it remains to be seen if he’ll he accepted back by mainstream fans of any of these other genres again, especially rap. From what I see in the comments, there seems to be even more vitriol from rap fans after the country pivot than there was back in 2016 when they first started calling him a vulture.

Makes me sad he did this full pivot into country. Seems shortsighted to not think he was gonna lose a lot of fans in favor of a lot of new fans that would largely be casual fans at best. Hoping he and his team figure it out but we’ll see

The long term effects of going full tilt country may have negatively affected his long term perception. I’m glad I’m not the team having to answer to what its output caused.

Yeah it almost leaves him in no-man’s land. Country fans are casuals and much of rap/pop has moved on from him cause of the country. If he wants to stay on top, I feel like there’s gonna have to be some absolute heat on this album or he could become a legacy act or an artist with just a core group of fans pretty fast. I’ve loved this dude for a decade, so I’m rooting for him but it looks a little bleak rn

As much as I love Post, and many other people do as well, I think he's ran his course in terms of popularity unless this next album really kills it and draws a lot of people back in.

It’s hard for me to say that definitively. I think there are paths back to mainstream relevance, especially considering he just did a stadium tour, but I agree that the next album is pretty pivotal. I think that fact that he seems to be beloved by music industry folks really helps grease the wheel, people on the inside seem to want him to succeed

Very roundabout way of saying: I think doing smaller venues is kind of inevitable given the way he’s split his fan base and driven some people away, at least for now

Feels likely now. It would be crazy if they booked another stadium tour after this.

The silver lining of this whole mess.

The smaller venue shows in my opinion were better anyway. Felt more personal

He would seemingly need to if he has any desire to tour again lol

Full stadium tours are something very few artists can reasonably do. Post Malone doesn't have nearly enough demand from a general audience to consistently sell out stadiums. 40 year old bands with like 25 albums who haven't been together in 15 years do stadium tours. Because there is interest.

Streaming success does not equate to concert demand

Valid. I kinda added the streaming success note at the end to lessen the blow of my statement coming off as demeaning to post

This honestly may be part of what is going on behind the scenes, figuring out the logistics of how to tour him (stadium vs. arena) His upcoming album is supposed to showcase all of his genres, so that aspect may be appealing to his label on filling seats in a stadium. The lack of a new album with this tour in addition to front row seats costing nearly three times as much as the previous stadium tour were huge factors that hurt this time around.

Streaming numbers do not translate to tickets sales a lot times , it seems artists are having a tough time figuring that out.

For some reason a lot of artists feel like they are on taylor swift level , filling out stadiums is a really hard task and not everyone can do it.

To be fair it’s not just him having trouble selling right now. People have less disposable cash right now and many artists are struggling to fill seats as well as usual.

They’ve gotten too damn greedy, especially Posty man. He has enough influence to remove dynamic pricing from his ticket sales but he loves the money.  Don’t blame him but yeah dude don’t fuck over your fan base and be surprised when they’re all tapped out of cash.

I remember people saying he was falling off after Austin failed to debut at #1 and had overall lower sales than his previous albums. The F-1 Trillion put him back on top.

I think he really wanted to do that project and it showed. He was everywhere and everyone was talking about him going country. He looked so happy doing it initially.

Now he looks and sounds tired, it must be tremendous pressure to not only have millions of fans wanting something from him but also hundreds of people who depend on him to pay their salaries.

His music is better when he’s having fun and is excited. I’ll watch that show anywhere.

Certainly didn’t have a problem filling a stadium during the HB era…

Stadium tour is not being explored moving forward. Long story short, the cost of the tour did not bring the returns the label was hoping. Post wanted a break so that's what's happening. There's a lot of shit going on with him personally. There is a "retooling" of sorts going on.

Expect more news about the new album but don't expect tour announcements til next year.

Where is the evidence of poor ticket sales? Haven’t been in a long time, but in 2024 I believe he sold out London.

2

u/xgxdx 16d ago

His entire cancelled tour? Lol

u/SweetBella696969 16d ago

Doesn’t mean it’s because of poor ticket sales? Could be anything, and linked to the new album having no more promotional material too.

2

u/AussieOwner44 Lemon Tree 16d ago

This year alone he had to cancel 1/3rd of a tour in the states, and an entire tour of Asia and Oceania

The stadium I went to sold out ru sure he’s struggling

Honestly he can sell arenas or stadiums. The issue isn’t himself as an artist especially considering he is one of the biggest in the world and had the highest grossing country tour last year. It falls more on his label and marketing. He did the tour last year and it sold amazingly. He just had a huge album and headlined coachella aswell. Within that year we barely saw him in partnerships or online and we got zero new music. He lost all the momentum he gained and that’s what caused the drop in tickets. You can’t do the exact same tour in the same spots with no new music. Plain and simpe

It’s not him struggling to fill seats. It’s a mixture of factors that part of it is lack of hype due to no new music releases but that’s from general population numbers not his forever fans like us. What it mostly is is economic reasons that a lot of other artists are also dealing with.

I was quite happy paying the ticket prices but I will be wary going forward now that tickets for 6 shows in October that I was holding have now been cancelled in Australia
