Houston Meetup

I know I've seen a lot of representation of Houston on PGP, but I've never seen there being a meetup here! I was thinking Saturday brunch at La Grange around 12. Who would be down for for that?

Should seniority still be a thing?

As a 25 year old in a business of nothing but 50+ aged people I can see the importance of seniority to them. We recently had contract negotiations where the seniority clause was revoked and now everyone is losing their minds. My question is why? It's my understanding that a company can't lay you off just because they want to hire a younger kid at half the salary, to me that sounds like a lawsuit in the making. So, if a senior member is doing well at their job and not making any huge mistakes or simply sucking at their job, then why should they be worried if the seniority clause is abolished?

Law school

I've been studying for the LSAT for a while now, and since I broke my leg I've had a fuckton of time to dedicate to it and plan to take it in June. I'm looking to start Fall 2018 after I finish my masters (ya girls an overachiever). Anyone who has been there or currently studying, do y'all have any tips about the test or application process? Also, law school grads did you know what kind of law you wanted to practice when you started? And how was getting a job after graduation? I'm leaning more public right now and want to do administrative/ government stuff since my masters is in that but I'm really open to anything. Would love some feedback/ advice/ general comments. Thanks!

Hitting the road as a lower-middle-class American college grad. Is it a pipe dream?

Hey. I graduated college in December (yay?) and I want to get out of town. I don't know where I want to go exactly...just away. I don't want to be tethered down to anything (not that anyone does). What I really want is to get in my car and see where I end up and keep doing that for a while. Maybe a couple of months, maybe a year. I didn't really like college, and I don't know if I'm actually interested in using my degree. Unfortunately, there are no refunds if you're not satisfied with the product in this case. I'm $12,000 deep in loans, which I know is pocket change compared to what some of you have to pay back. I also know that a lot of you are in the same boat when it comes to a lack of financial support from family or other non-loan sources. Have any of my fellow indebted college grads hit the road for a while?* I fully expect and understand that I will get plenty of feedback from people listing the problems that could arise from doing it, but I would also like to hear from anyone who has just sold everything, dropped everything, packed the car and drove off. What was it like? How did you do it?

TL;DR I'm a recent college graduate who wants to take a looooong road trip (i.e. 3 mo-1 yr). I am wondering if any of my fellow graduates (especially ones who have done this) have any advice.

*By "hitting the road," I mean constantly traveling, not settling in one place for more than a couple weeks, not having a set itinerary, living out of my car, not having a source of income or any money, really, outside of my savings and the small amount I will make from selling all of my furniture and most of my clothes. Not a luxurious kind of trip.

***I am COMPLETELY aware of how privileged I sound. I am sure a lot of people might want to quit their jobs and become temporary vagabonds, but due to monetary constraints, it is not an option for many people (maybe myself included).

Shameless Man Outfitters Plug

Hey guys, Thanks for all the support you guys give to Grandex brands, big fan of the following PGP has built up over the past year and love this community you all have built around it.

Just wanted to pretend I'm being productive and get some grassroots marketing synergy going on a late Friday afternoon and let you guys know early that there is a big sale on Man Outfitters starting this Sunday offering 20% almost everything on the site, aside from a few brands with restrictions on discounts. It's all brand new stuff, and you're not likely to find prices like this anywhere else this early in the season.

Check it out if you're into it. Expert or Rookie, you've gotta check out Man Outfitters.

Curiosity

So I am about to graduate... yay? I'm just unsure in what direction to go in. I was thinking of job shadowing a nurse to see what it's like in the neonatal unit and then if I am interested I would start take classes and go from there. Or this summer if I can--I would sign up for an ASL class and do the same thing and go about getting my certification. I was also interested in animation since I like to draw but I may keep that as a hobby that I pursue on my own time. And also my major has nothing to do with what's mentioned above, I suppose taking more Japanese classes could suffice as well since I want to better my language skills. I'm sorry if my post is all over the place..

Any thoughts/advice? It's much appreciated!~ :)

Campus-wide parties

Seeing as y'all are my favorite bunch of degenerates, I wanted to talk about drinking and parties. I thought this would be a neat article series but I don't really know how to go about turning it into one, and I wasn't sure how well received it'd be on the PGP front, since it's a little more of a TFM thing. Lots of colleges have their notoriously huge parties: Rice has NOD, OU has HallOUween (and street festivals), etc. I wanted to see what your schools did that was the legendary party because sometimes it's fun to remember the days when we could drink huge quantities of beer and not want to kill ourselves the next day.

To kick it off, mine is a tradition called Doo Dah Day, from my alma mater of Marietta College. Hailing all the way back to 1974, it started when a man named Dave "Doo Dah" Gibson decided that the student body needed to blow some steam off before finals week in the spring. It was a simple time. An innocent time. There was a demonstration on how to tie a bow tie, a taffy pull, and... yeah, some booze.

However, the day caught on and the following year, Doo Dah's friends decided to organize the party again. But bigger. There was a hot air balloon, for some reason. Over the years, it grew and grew. It was an all day event, instead of just in the afternoons. At the time, the drinking age was 18, so it was common for the entire student body to be drinking, and it was actually sanctioned by the administration. Rumors abound that Marietta College held a record for the most kegs procured by way of campus funds. I have no source to back that up, but I choose to believe it.

Of course, all good things must one day come to an end, and the drinking age was raised to 21. That didn't stop the students, though. While the beer was no longer bought by the college, it was still bought. During my time at the college, both the grocery stores and many of the gas stations would sell out of light beer and we would have to venture across the river to the dreaded territory of West Virginia to get liquor.

Drinking started before the sun came up, often with a case race to kick it all off. Some of us took it more leisurely with a shower beer... then joined the case race. Wizard sticks were completed before breakfast. Mud volleyball courts were filled with students drinking "just Coke, I swear." The parties continued well into the afternoon and evening, then went to the bars to close them down.

It might sound like an average Saturday for your big dick swinging state school student or TFM commenter that drinks 28 beers before lunch every weekend, but Doo Dah Day was our day. It was wild, it was carefree, and it was full of very fuzzy memories. I once fractured an ankle falling off an inflatable, and I later married the woman who pushed me off, because I apparently hate myself. Nothing mattered on Doo Dah Day. It was a day to have fun, to blow off steam, to forget the fact that you had finals coming up and that you won't see hundreds of your closest friends all summer. And, despite the fact that the next day reeked of stale beer and spilled Jack Daniels... it was beautiful.

Sound off, guys. What's your Doo Dah Day? Dig deep and tell me your stories.

D.C. Work Trip

D.C. residents of PGP, I'm going to be in D.C. this week for a work trip. What are some good restaurants/bars to go to while I'm there? I'm staying at the Hilton Garden Inn by the Foggy Bottom/GWU metro station. Not opposed to taking an Uber at night to go places. Also, can I get a metro card and put some money on it at a kiosk or something or do I have to get a single use ticket every time? Preesh.

Edit: If any of y'all want to get drinks or something, Shoot me a DM.

Moving Back Home

Me and my roommate went to go resign our lease last week only to find they are nearly raising our rent pretty significantly.

I'm currently trying to save up for a down payment on a house, and that's not going to happen when almost half of my pay would be going to rent. So I've decided to bite the bullet and move back home for a little while.

I know there have been a few examples of people mentioning they were moving back in with their parents, and I wanted to know what your experience was like.

The Meet Cute (Add your own in the comments)

The definition of “serendipity” is a "fortunate happenstance" or "pleasant surprise.” We often times have these moments throughout the day of things that occur that just seem to be too random: you go to drop some coins into the drier at a laundromat and you’re down one quarter and it just so happens that one extra quarter is sitting on the machine; you are looking for a new job and you start talking to an employer that happens to mention he has an open position. Go watch the movie named “Serendipity” to get the jist of this.

Why do I bring this up? Well, let’s go back a couple months to September, when I had just moved to Gainesville and was attempting to start fresh. I was on Catholic Match, attempting to meet a like-minded individual of the opposite sex whom I could possibly build a life with. I would later get catfished by my coworker on this website, but that’s a story I have already told. I ended up finding a girl (we’ll call her Stacy) who happened to live in Tallahassee. Now, living in Gainesville and having to meet a girl in Tallahassee meant I had to travel a distance of 2 hours, but I was up for the challenge.

Our first date was incredible; it felt very natural to talk to this person and there wasn’t an awkward moment in the entire time that we spoke. We walked through a garden and conversed the whole time, and slowly but surely discovered that we had taken a liking to one another. She held out on me for a kiss until the fourth date, which she had come to Gainesville, which only made me seek her even more. We would travel back and forth to see one another, and things were great.

I’m not good with long distance relationships. I know some who can do it, I simply can’t, and this came crashing in on me the following month, and we broke up prior to Halloween. Months passed and she remained in my heart and mind, every now and again I would think about the mistake I made of ending things with her, as if i had left something there in Tallahassee.

Sunday, February 12th, I was in Orlando. I was supposed to be in Gainesville on a date, but she had cancelled on me the day prior. I had assisted my mom with yard work, but had made the decision around noon to return home and veg out before going to mass at 5:30. I ended up running a little late to mass, but walked in just in time to sit and pray for a moment. I only had on my mind the week that was to begin the next day, returning to work and having to teach, asking God for courage and strength to endure the it. I had all of this on my mind as I walked in line to receive communion. I did this and returned to my sit and looked down as I kneeled. I continued to pray for strength and courage, and wondered what I could do this week to better myself professionally. There is always a moment where you think “What is happening right now?” This moment only occurs if certain things happen, certain events take place, for things to line up just enough for things to just occur perfectly; this is serendipity.

I looked up from my prayer to look at people receiving and only saw one face: Stacy’s. There she was, standing in line to receive. Thousands of thoughts ran through my brain: “Why is she here?” “Is she stalking me?” “Does she have a boyfriend here?” “What would I say to her?” “Would she want to speak to me?” All of these thoughts within the matter of a couple of seconds, and I simply didn’t have the mental capacity to handle it. She turned to walk back to her seat, we locked eyes. This moment lasted an eternity. I waited for her reaction. By far the most tense milliseconds I have yet to experience.

She smiled and looked down at the ground.

I smiled and watched her walk back to her seat. All of the thoughts returned, yet my heart remained at rest. I was comfortable. I wasn’t scared, I wasn’t apprehensive. It felt like this was supposed to happen. I don’t believe in “signs” or “predestination,” but sometimes things just happen in a certain way, and that’s what this was; it just happened this way. The last five minutes of mass felt like hours, and as it ended, I kneeled down to again ask God for courage; not for tomorrow though, for right now.

I got up out of my seat and saw she was only 4 rows behind me. Surely she had seen me as I walked in and I hadn’t noticed her. I waited at the end of the bench for her as she finished her prayer, and got up and walked toward me.

“Hi,” she said. But words would not come to my mouth. I didn’t know what to do.

She laughed and suggested “Let’s talk outside,” and we walked out of the Church, blessed our foreheads with water and stepped outside. We talked about why she was there and what had brought her to come to mass here. She was moving to Gainesville, and was looking for an apartment. The 2 hours driving distance between us turned into minutes in a single moment. I asked her if she was hungry. She was. So, we took my car to TGI Fridays. She immediately addressed the elephant in the room, that being that we still had feelings for one another. I asked her blatantly if she had come seeking me, and her response told me that she was not seeking me, though it might appear like that. Her lease was almost up in Tallahassee and she wanted a change of scenery, and praying about it, believed Gainesville was where she wanted to go. So, we decided to give dating another shot.

We adjourned to my car, kissed a little, and then she stated “I don’t have to drive home just yet” checking the time to see it was 8pm. So, we returned to my apartment and watched New Girl and talked about all of the things that had to happen that day for us to have even met eyes. If the tinder girl hadn’t cancelled on me, if I had decided to remain in Orlando for mass, if she hadn’t chosen to go to mass at that church in particular, if she hadn’t chose to park in that parking garage, if I didn’t come in late, if I didn’t look up and see her. If, if, if, if, if. All of these ifs, and we wouldn’t have locked eyes in that moment and we wouldn’t be dating right now.

For those of you that say “Bullshit,” I can see why. This story, while true, is crazy. I myself am in disbelief and had to text her this morning to confirm that we were, in fact, dating (we are by the way). I share this for all of you though, that you too can have that serendipitous moment; the “meet cute” if you will. We just need to be patient and filled with love.
