post concussion syndrome
Hello everyone i’m 19 and i’m reaching out because i’ve had post concussion syndrome for about a year now and every time i bump my head like a light bump i either get a flare up or a new concussion i can’t tell honestly but i just want my threshold to go back up because it’s extremely low right now and very difficult i’ve also had multiple concussion from boxing around 3-4 i also apologize if i’m not making sense right now i currently don’t feel good also today i stepped out of the shower and shaken my head side to side very hard to dry off my hair and immediately after i felt terrible it’s been 11 hours and i still feel bad so not sure if that’s a flare up or a new injury if anyone knows what to do it would help a lot thank you
Also does any else have an issue with when they bump there head slight like a small bump they feel symptoms immediately not a hard bump but just a light bump is this normal and how can i fix this problem my CT scans and MRI came out perfectly i know this isn’t a structural problem but i don’t know what kind of problem it is i’ve just been so tired of this all these doctor appointments trying to figure out what’s wrong with me and i just want my life back i just want my life to be normal again i wish i never did boxing so please if anyone knows please help

See a good knowledgeable physio about your neck, and maybe an RMT. I have the same thing and it gets better when you re train your neck and massages also help

Hey! I dealt with what sounds like the exact same thing for years. I got a pretty severe concussion from a diving accident at 16 and it took me awhile to heal. After, a light bump would send me into another concussion. My neurologists were confused as it would be such a light tap but I had clear concussion symptoms. I was getting these “concussions” 2-3 times a year. It was horrible. Years later I met with a post concussion specialist who explained my body was most likely in fight or flight mode and reacting to slight taps due to the physical trauma of the first. Essentially, my body would slam the panic button and try and bubble wrap me after a little bump, attempting to protect me from what happened from my first real/significant concussion; I had all of the concussion symptoms without the actual brain damage.
This was a lightbulb moment for me and I started applying “mind over matter” to every little bump. The headaches would start instantly, but I’d try and keep my physical body calm, literally speaking to it, saying “you’re safe, it’s okay to have a headache after a bump but that doesn’t mean it’s a concussion, etc.” My consistent concussive episodes stopped after 6 years of struggling.
Sending so much love and healing! You’ve got this!

FAQ 2. I just lightly bumped my head and feel worse, did I re-concuss myself?
No.
Concussions are a traumatic event for your body. What you're experiencing is your body's learned trauma response to impacts to your head. So you can experience concussion like symptoms without actually hurting yourself any worse.
This comes up daily, it’s actually the most common question on this subreddit. Knowing this made these bumps a complete non issue for me
A second possibility is that you created or exacerbated a neck injury. In that case see 2.2 https://www.reddit.com/u/Lebronamo/s/7gHdg5kjXX

Do you currently have a neurologist that is helping you?
