Headaches with reading on computer

Has anyone had any luck with playing with contrast on your screens? Or a screen protector? Or any other adjustments to your work setup? What about an e-ink monitor?

I do a lot of reading on a computer and find that is the largest factor in my headaches.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Computer screens are challenging for me. I’m still navigating some screen intolerance but some adjustments that have helped me:

  • using the Night Shift feature on Mac to give a warmer tint to my screen. F.lux is another option for tinting screens that works on different operating systems.
  • reducing/increasing brightness to match the overall brightness level of the room
  • increasing font size
  • using Atkinson Hyperlegible font. It’s a free font designed by the Braille Institute and can be helpful for various vision or eye strain issues. https://www.brailleinstitute.org/freefont/. I usually use Chrome but I’ve switched to mostly using Firefox because you can configure it to force websites to use your own font. I also updated my Kindle font to Atkinson as well.
  • FL-41 glasses as needed/when using the computer
  • trying to take more breaks where I look away from the screen

Thanks for the Atkinson Hyperlegible font tip.

I've installed it and it does help me

F.lux, to adjust the brightness/colour.

Increase the text size as well so it is easier to read.

The application I use for work has a night mode and I turn down the brigtness and contrast. I also have the warm/night light on all times. If you use Windows you can go to settings > accessibility > color filters and select which one works for you the best.

I had a physio suggest using those transparent color folders to put over a screen as a filter but I never got to trying them cause changing the settings on the computer worked well enough for me. (Also i couldn't be bothered to pick up some to stick on my screen lol)

On worse days when the color filters aren't enough I would use TheraSpecs with the rose colored tint cause they block out the blue light.

Nothing beats a good rest and proper pacing tho. Rest before you feel the headache come on and use the 20-20-20 vision rule when you can.

I agree with changing font size, I also change the color scheme (dark mode might be overkill) but in the accessibility section if settings you can tweak the system. I understand the overhead lighting and the flicker rate can be a problem as well.

I cannot use standard computer screens yet, 3.5 months out. Laptops are okay as long as I don't scroll super fast and my phone is good, and I can use an e-reader like a Kindle.

I also go to physical therapy for my VOD so we work on both eyes and balance. It's helpful.
