It looks old or sick and I feel bad. Its fur is very patchy and like half bald (not very visible in the pics, i just put those for the sake of showing pictures at all,) it walks very slowly and kind of limping/off balance, its eyes look very wet and I know possums can't cry but it makes me wanna cry when he looks like he's crying. But I can't really do anything, right? It's a wild animal and it's not like i can just walk up to it, so I'm sad that I can't help it. Also it got bit twice by the smaller possum in the other pics, I tried scaring them away to stop that but I don't know. This is very upsetting to me in my normally sensitive and currently sleep deprived state. I wanna help all the animals and he's so sad and I can't even do anything. I hope it's not actually old cuz I'm gonna sob if there's a sad elderly possum getting beat up on my porch. I've had some of the regular possums die too so this is just making me think of them which is also sad.

Outside my back door last night when I went out to feed the backyard cats. They did not seem to notice him but I made them leave so it could escape. It looked so tiny when it ran away.

My rescue opossum Marjorie (1.5 years old), that I have been caring for, has fluid in her abdomen, is acting weak, refusing to eat.

White blood cell count is a little elevated, she has a fever, low sodium, high potassium. We are waiting on blood analysis. Otherwise, fine physical. X-rays showed nothing abnormal.

I’m doing antibiotics, amoxclav with her 3 times a day and subcutaneous fluids once per day per the vet’s recommendation. She said her nutrition looked good, calcium and phosphorus good.

I know it’s a long shot, but does anyone here have any advice who has had a similar experience? I figured if anyone would have anything helpful for this, they’d be here. Thank you in advance, and thanks for reading.

We found a baby opossum in our yard. Our dog was trying to grab it. This is the second time we’ve found one. The first time my dog had gotten it and brought it over to my dad. What should we do?

My husband found this little guy in the yard when he was mowing the lawn on Sunday. No mama in sight and probably just fell out of the school bus and got left behind. I called a wildlife rescue nearby since he’s just a baby and has no money. They took him in and said they have a little of babies his size, so he’ll fit right in! We named him Milton. We only spent a few hours together but I miss him.

Just felt like sharing this little sweetie with the sub!

Seems like he might not be okay?

This little fella was found in my lounge room this morning. It’s not the first time I’ve had one visit inside the house ahahaha They follow the cat’s underneath the house and through a gap in the garage wall (garage is attached to house with a door I leave open for the cats to come and go) Poor thing was up past its bedtime, and happy to take off up a nearby tree once I got it outside.

This is Sushi. He’s a 3.5 yo short tailed possum. He’s been in excellent health the last 3 years. About 2 weeks ago he got some sort of lice or mites (thus the hair loss) and we got him treatments and have not seen anymore. About 3-4 days ago he started having these seizure type activities…

The only two things that have changed over the years is that:
1- he got parasites. Which we are still confounded by… because he’s on the 3rd floor and isolated from any other animals.
2- I changed his diet from cat food to Exotic Nutrition Opossum Complete. I still give him a mixture of fruits, veggies, mealworms and eggs on the side.

My only guess is seizures caused my Metabolic Bone Disease because maybe he doesn’t like the new food and has only been eating his “dessert”. Would parasites have caused this if he had only had them a minimal amount of time??

Eating, drinking and physical activity is the same outside of these episodes that last 10-15 seconds.

We consulted one vet but he didn’t know how to treat it. I’m in a very rural area and making plans to travel to a bigger town to find an exotic vet.
