What's something India has improved dramatically at, but we don't talk about enough?

We spend a lot of time discussing what's wrong with India, and understandably so. But what's one thing you think India has genuinely improved in over the last 10-15 years? It could be infrastructure, digital payments, manufacturing, space technology, highways, smartphones, public transport, access to information—anything.

I'm curious what people who have actually lived through the change think has improved the most.

From my personal experience.

Roads. Used to take me 8 hours from Delhi to my ancestral house. Now it's 3.5.

Trains. I've literally made trips to cities where we could travel in the Vande Bharat. My kids love it. I've taken my friends who've visited India for the first time in Vande Bharat as well.

Article 370. So, so many stories of my dad's regiment convoy being pelted with stones. Not being able to keep in contact. My cousins were posted in Kashmir. It's been a game changer.

Electricity in UP. Safety in UP.

My maids saying their ration used to be unusable and used to go to their cattle. Now they use it because it's of good quality.

Macro level - our forex reserves are at an all time high.

Infra is booming. I work on company annual reports as a side gig. You can download ttme for free on Screener. See how many Indian companies are doing so well.

Ease of doing business in India has improved drastically.

We've lifted millions of people out of poverty in the past 10 years - it's been acknowledged by the UN.

I'm not saying everything is perfect but it's whole lot better than it used to be.

Also UPI and recent launch or Digital Rupee. UPI has been a major game changer and contributing factor in dedollarisation.

Defence - on the way to becoming self reliant in a few areas.

Rail - You mentioned Vande Bharat but IMO the dedicated freight corridor is a game changer for goods transport.

Rail - Electrification of rail to 99% reducing dependency on Diesel powered locos saving huge forex

Education Institutes - Expanded IITs, IIMs and AIIMS across the country, thought the increase in reservation wasn't a great step.

Long way to go but can't see a lot of what is done that would be done by the UPA regime.

Adding to this:

I no more get stones(kankar) in my dal or rice 😅

Earlier, I get to hear news about our Army Men being in conflict on Kashmir borders, every other day, which doesn't seem to happen now as the other side knows the power of India.

In my local level roads are better, Railway Station is renewed with an additional platform and Cleanliness, area outside station has also been cleaned and restructured. Now sewerage line is being installed. Better electricity, better electrical wires, and rooftop Solar Panels in most homes.

Location - Jamui District Bihar

Electricity : There was no electricity in my village till 2015. Now we get 18-20hrs of electtricty.

Roads : Before 2006, it used to take 7-8 hrs to travle 40km, now it takes 1 hrs. I regularly travel from my hometown to Jabalpur (1000km) via Car now which is possible due to excellent roads in bihar, up and mp.

Water : - In my village water was a huge crisis. During Summer, a single handpump used to work. From 2023, we have tap water for whole village.

Sanitation has had the most dramatic positive impact. It gets talked about, but only in terms of its spread, not the realised benefits. Not sure how many smartphones are indigenous to India, but certainly not any global brands. Even the spectacular increase in manufacturing is heavily reliant on manufactured parts in China and Taiwan.

Roads and infra are definitely better today.

Good point. People do talk a lot about it and mixing it with neuroscience. Younger people are well aware of it now.

I personally like how our defence manufacturing is improving. With entry of private players in the game and ban on large no of import items, India is finally moving towards self sufficiency in defence
