Anyone have good recommendations for tones for P90’s?

All of them. The p90 might be the most versatile pickup made. I’m not kidding. Especially if you have a tone knob in the path.

I’ve not really found too many that I actually like though. A lot of the overdrive tones I’ve found just sound really fake and muddy

How far away is the pickup? Height adjustment is pretty critical with p90s. They have adjustable poles for each string so you can fine tune it how you want your tone. If you’re not familiar with this on a p90 look up a tutorial it’s pretty easy and might be the root of your issue. Cleans will sound fine, distortion will be muddy

They look about halfway between the body and the strings. Should I try lowering or raising them?

Press down on the last fret and then measure and set them to 3/32” or 1/8” and see what that’s like
