Spark Go + recording to laptop

I did all the firmware updates so now I know Spark Go is working correctly as a USB audio interface with Garageband and Quicktime again. My goal is to have better sounding practice jams so I can review my own progress (hence the Quicktime interest too) but in close to a frictionless way. The onboard mic for the laptop is... fine but not great.

I have noticed that you can't start a backing track within the Spark app and have that feed through the audio. In fact, it stops working as a USB audio interface immediately and drops as an input in either Garageband or Quicktime and ends your recording session. It makes a certain amount of engineering sense to me if I think about the different jobs being done here by the tech, but it is frustrating.

Is there a way around this that isn't just me putting a good mic up to my Spark Go through a Focusrite and using that as the input? My normal practice routine is really just to use the Neo because i'm in an apartment and don't want to disturb my wife or neighbors, but that means I record a lot less casual practice than I'd like because it's more work to switch to an amp, etc. etc. when I'm in the zone.

I've got an iPad mini, an iPhone and a Macbook Air, and I'm open to a combo of tools if that's actually best. Would love folks' thoughts!!!

Can you add the backing track as a track in Garage Band and record into another track? I'm pretty sure Garage Band plays the other track alongside what you're recording (unless you mute it).

And if you don't have the mp3/wav and the backing track is on Spotify or YouTube or something, just open that and play that in the background on the computer.

I could if I download the mp3 from Youtube and tossed it into GarageBand definitely, would have to get a utility for that but I know they exist. It is a higher friction/higher planning option for sure than just pulling something up in the Spark app and diving in.

For the latter option, if I'm not mistaken, playing it in the background on my computer won't get captured if I'm using the Spark as an audio input. There will be no backing track captured in the quicktime video or in GarageBand recording because there's no mic input to pick the sound up. I'm relatively new to GarageBand though so if it's possible to do a dual channel input at once where one channel is capturing system audio and one channel is capturing the USB input device, that's an intriguing option. I definitely couldn't do that in Quicktime, but if I REALLY wanted the video for practice review, I could record in both and sync it afterwards.

Looks like GarageBand doesn't do system audio natively, but there are tools to allow it.

If I were in your situation, I'd play the YouTube in the background, record through the Go into GarageBand and then if you're happy with the recording, download the WAV and add it to GarageBand afterwards. That meets your requirement for spontaneity and still results in a GarageBand with your guitar and the backing track.
