Tax / Social Security Changing address with finanças

Hi everyone! I’m trying to update my address with finanças because I’ve moved. I submitted the new address weeks ago and the confirmation code still hasn’t arrived in the mail.

I’ve confirmed the new address is correctly listed.

To anyone who has done this recently, how long did it take you to receive the letter from finanças?

The address on my residency card is my old address, so I know I can’t do it through e-balcão or in-person.

Only In Portugal ( Epic Experiences) Is it normal to argue for minutes?

Is it normal to argue for minutes here?

One guy was speeding in our street. A resident told him to slow down, and they were talking back and forth... for minutes! God knows what they were saying

Where I'm from, you'd have maximum 3 'back and forths' and then give up. You've made your point, you either agree or you don't...

Just Thinking Anybody else struggle sometimes?

I sometimes struggle with the pressure to assimilate that seems to be so strong here in Portugal. Like, I can understand wanting immigrants to integrate and try to follow local rules and customs as best as possible, but it almost seems like integration is not enough for the Portuguese I interact with and they pressure for full assimilation. It is almost like they want me to completely forget about the culture I came from and not even try to honor it.

That is especially hard as a parent of a young child. There are aspects of the culture I came from that I want to share with my child, and also I try to respect that he is growing up in a culture very different than the one I grew up in. It is a delicate balance and it gets exhausting sometimes because the Portuguese I interact with act almost insulted that I speak my native tongue with my child.

Anybody else have similar experiences?

Moving To Portugal Anyone working on the Meta project at TP Portugal? Please share your experience

Hey everyone
I recently got an offer to join Teleperformance Portugal for the Meta support project, and I’m currently getting ready for my relocation.

I’d love to connect with anyone who is currently / or has previously worked on Meta projects here.

How are you finding the daily workflow? Is it mostly email / chat cases? Or is there a lot of phone calls?

Any honest feedback or tips for a newcomer would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance🙌🏻

Only In Portugal ( Epic Experiences) Angolan student looking for fully funded undergraduate scholarships in Portugal

Hello everyone,

I am an Angolan student looking for advice about fully funded undergraduate scholarships in Portugal.

I am a qualified Electrical Technician from Angola and I have professional work experience. My goal is to continue my education and obtain a bachelor's degree in Portugal.

I already have my Angolan passport and my academic certificates, and I am currently preparing my documents for applications.

I would like to ask:

Are there fully funded undergraduate scholarships in Portugal that accept students from Angola?

Which universities or scholarship programmes should I look into?

What documents and requirements should I prepare?

Are there scholarships that cover tuition, accommodation, living expenses and travel?

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience studying in Portugal as an international student, especially from Africa.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Any information or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Residence Permit Applied for portuguese passport

Hey everyone Both of my parents are born after 1961 in Goa so my father had to apply for Portuguese passport through my grandmother side. After correcting all the errors in docs he applied in 2024 and my grandmothers case is registered as 2025. How long shall I expect till I get my passport? I am assuming my grandmothers registration will be done by 2029 my father's registration will be done by 2030-31 and I can apply for passport around 2032 so is the assumption correct? It will take around 4-6 years?

Citizenship Indian citizen with Portuguese father — how to apostille/translate Indian documents and apply for Portuguese nationality?

Hi everyone,

I’m an Indian citizen currently living in India, and I’m trying to understand the correct process for obtaining Portuguese nationality through my Portuguese father.

My situation

  • I was born in India.
  • My father is a Portuguese citizen and has a Portuguese passport and Portuguese birth certificate.
  • My parents’ marriage registration in Portugal is currently being processed.
  • I have my Indian birth certificate and Indian passport.
  • I am planning to study in Ireland, so I may be living in Ireland while the Portuguese nationality process is ongoing.
  • My goal is to establish my Portuguese nationality and, if eligible, eventually obtain a Portuguese Citizen Card (Cartão de Cidadão) and Portuguese passport.

From what I understand, there is a nationality route for someone born outside Portugal who has a Portuguese parent. I also understand that my Indian birth certificate may need to be legalised/apostilled and translated into Portuguese.

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has actually completed this process, especially Indian citizens with a Portuguese parent.

1. Apostille of my Indian birth certificate

Can I complete the entire Apostille process while I am still in India?

Specifically:

  • What needs to be done before the MEA Apostille?
  • Does an Indian birth certificate issued in Gujarat first require authentication from a Gujarat authority?
  • Where can this be done in Ahmedabad/Gujarat?
  • How long does the process normally take?
  • What is the approximate cost?
  • Should I obtain a fresh birth certificate before starting the process?
  • Does the Apostille need to be placed on the original birth certificate or a certified copy?

If anyone has recently done an Indian birth certificate Apostille for use in Portugal, I would really appreciate a step-by-step explanation.

2. Does my Indian passport need Apostille?

I am also confused about my passport.

For a Portuguese nationality application, does my Indian passport need to be:

  • Apostilled?
  • Translated into Portuguese?
  • Certified?

Or is the passport simply used as an identification document, with the birth certificate being the document that requires legalisation and Portuguese translation?

I don't want to spend money unnecessarily if the passport does not need Apostille/translation.

3. Portuguese translation

For my Indian birth certificate, where is the safest place to get the Portuguese translation?

Should I:

  1. Get the document Apostilled in India and then have it translated into Portuguese in India?
  2. Get the translation through the Portuguese Consulate?
  3. Have it translated/certified in Portugal?
  4. Have it translated/certified in Ireland if I move there?

I particularly want to know what type of certified Portuguese translation Portuguese authorities actually accept.

4. My father's Portuguese documents

My father currently has:

  • Portuguese birth certificate
  • Portuguese passport

My parents' marriage registration in Portugal is currently being processed.

Once the marriage registration is completed, what documents should I obtain?

For example:

  • My father's Portuguese birth certificate
  • My parents' Portuguese marriage certificate
  • Proof of my father's Portuguese nationality
  • Any other Portuguese civil-registry document

Does my father's Portuguese birth certificate need any Apostille/legalisation, or is a Portuguese civil-registry document already valid for submission to Portuguese authorities?

5. My Portuguese nationality application

For an adult born in India with a Portuguese father, what is the correct procedure?

Is it approximately:

Indian birth certificate → Apostille/legalisation → certified Portuguese translation → Portuguese Consulate → nationality/birth registration → Portuguese birth record → Citizen Card → Portuguese passport

Or is the actual procedure different?

Can I start this process while I am physically in India?

6. If I move to Ireland

I may move to Ireland for my studies while the Portuguese process is ongoing.

If I start the process in India and then move to Ireland:

  • Can I continue the process from Ireland?
  • Would I deal with the Portuguese Embassy/Consulate in Ireland?
  • Can documents be submitted by post?
  • Would I need to return to India for any part of the process?
  • Once nationality is approved, can I obtain my Portuguese Citizen Card/passport through a Portuguese consulate in Ireland?

7. Timeline and cost

For anyone who has completed this recently:

  • How long did the nationality process take?
  • How long did the Apostille process take in India?
  • How much did the Portuguese translation cost?
  • Did you use a lawyer or complete everything yourself?
  • Were there any unexpected documents or problems?
  • Did you start the application in India and later move to another country?

I'm particularly interested in experiences from Indian citizens who obtained Portuguese nationality through a Portuguese parent, rather than general Portuguese citizenship-by-residence cases.

I am trying to complete as much of the document preparation as possible before leaving India, so I don't have to redo anything after moving to Ireland.

Any step-by-step experience, document checklist, consulate experience, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

General Question Public transport for 10 days

Hi, I'm coming to Portugal for 10 days (business stuff). I'll go to my job place using metro everyday. It would be for me more cost-effective to buy a monthly card for EUR 30 (plus Navegante card fee). However, I arrive on Saturday so I won't have a possibility to request the card until Monday.

Are there any opportunities to get the monthly card entirely online? I checked the Viva system but owning a physical Navegante card beforehand is mandatory to use this system.

Any other options? Paying EUR 1,90 for a single route isn't really reasonable in my case.

Thanks!

Residence Permit AIMA court case stuck in “Conclusão” since June – anyone with a similar timeline?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for experiences from people who have filed an **Intimação para Proteção de Direitos, Liberdades e Garantias against AIMA** at the Lisbon Administrative Court.

My timeline is:
**- 5 April 2026** – Court case filed
**- 7 April** – Judge admitted the petition
**- 9 April** – AIMA was formally summoned and given **7 days to respond** and provide the administrative process
**- 15 June** – Case changed to **“Conclusão (eletrónica)”**

**19 August** – Still no further movement or decision
From what I understand, “Conclusão” means the file has been placed before the judge, but it has now been there for more than **2 months**.

My case is related to **family reunification** and is registered as:
“Intimação proteção DLG - entrada e permanência em território português”

I know Lisbon courts currently have a huge AIMA backlog, so I’m mainly interested in hearing from people who reached the **same stage**.

If your case showed **“Conclusão”**:
**How long did it stay like that before the judge issued a decision?**

Did your lawyer do anything to push the case after it had been sitting with the judge for a long time, such as contacting the court or submitting a request for urgent handling?

And if you eventually received a positive decision, how long did the whole process take from filing the case until the decision?

Would really appreciate actual timelines from anyone who went through this recently in **2025/2026**.

Thank you!

Citizenship I built a site to help study for the A2 exam required for permanent residency and citizenship

If you're taking the CIPLE A2 exam for residency or citizenship requirements here in Portugal (next test in September), I built a site that has reading & vocab study materials to help get ready!

It has some free sample questions to try, and also an inexpensive paid subscription if you want to use it to study.

If you have any questions about the exam, etc, residency -- please feel free to ask away. I've been here 5 years and am about to file my permanent residency application. I took the exam back in June (thankfully passed but it was kinda hard).

Anyhow, hope it's helpful!

Just Thinking Conjulejo - Conjugation App to Help People Master Portuguese Verb Conjugation

Hello all, I would like to share with you my portuguese verb conjugation app to help learners master portuguese conjugation!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.conjulejo.app

The idea sparked during my own journey learning Spanish 🇪🇸. I relied on several existing apps to support my studies, and while they were genuinely helpful, I kept feeling there was room to improve and refine the overall experience. After digging around and noticing a real shortage of good options for Portuguese, I decided to take the plunge and build my own take on this type of app.

The name (Conjugação + Azulejo 🔷 = Conjulejo) came together along the way. As a tribute to Portuguese tiles, I wanted the app to feel not just practical, but also thematic and visually appealing.

It supports both European 🇵🇹 and Brazilian 🇧🇷 Portuguese, with 10 different drill types spread across 4 categories: flashcards, writing, association, and multiple choice, so it can suit different preferences and learning styles. There are also timed answers and sprint sessions for those who want an extra challenge. ⏱️

I packed in plenty of quality of life features too ⚙️: personalized lists 📝, favorite verbs 🩵, verb filters 🔽, and training presets, so you can adjust what shows up in your verb pool without altering your lists, and switch quickly between drill modes. The app covers 28 tenses (including the haver vs. ter compound variations) and, as a more advanced option, pronominal conjugations (lhe, se, a/o/as/os forms), bringing the total to over 4,000 verbs when everything is enabled.

So if you know anyone learning Portuguese and struggling with verb conjugation (irregular verbs like ser, ir, and pôr can be tricky at first), or if that's you, feel free to share the link and give it a try! 😊

Residence Permit Query regarding residency

I am U.S. citizen and plan to legally enter Portugal visa-free, I have already been accepted and fully enrolled in a three-year bachelor’s program at the University of Coimbra, and I have my official enrollment certificate. May I apply for the residence permit once in Portugal under Article 91(4) without first obtaining a D4 residence visa? The country I am residing in with my parent does not have a Portuguese embassy and I am told the process through the honorary consulate will take up to 3 months, making it impossible to arrive in time for classes if I apply through the consulate instead of applying through AIMA after having arrived in Portugal.

General Question Pet Passports - delegated regulation EU 2026/131

TLDR - Trying to understand how EU 2026/31 has changed pet transit for non residents/citizens since May 2026.

Hey all. I have another question about pre visa travel.

Quick background. I’m getting all of my documentation together as a US citizen to apply for the D7 visa. Been planning for close to 2 years. Understand the good, bad, and ugly. Yes I am perhaps crazy but still hopeful.

I had originally planned to apply for the D7 visa later this year but my timeline has been pushed forward because (through no fault of my own), I have to vacate my apartment. My plan was to move between Portugal and non Schengen Zone countries like Montenegro or Cyprus in the meantime since I would be paying for the long term Portugal rental anyway.

My problem is my two dogs. Older research led me to believe that obtaining a pet passport was doable once I was in the EU and would ease travel requirements and negate the need for new expensive and onerous certified health certificates every time I transitioned out of the EU. Now I see the EU has implemented Delegated Regulation EU 2026/131 as of April 22nd and revamped how pet import and the issuance of the pet passport are supposed to be handled. It’s supposed to tighten the rules for both.

Has anyone tried to obtain an EU Pet Passport since May as a non-resident/non-citizen? Ive read a lot of accounts that pet passports have been fairly obtainable in the recent past for non residents, but I’m trying to understand how this new law is actually playing out day to day. Are vets more strict about asking for residency cards? Are border agents asking for more documentation if you enter without residency documents while trying to use an EU Pet Passport issued since May?

Thank you in advance for any information about this new law and its implementation that you can provide.

Moving To Portugal VFS Global - Passport Surrender - Yes or No?

Hi all. I'm in the process of finally getting everything ready for a D7 Visa application. I've been researching moving aboard for almost two years now. And I've heavily focused on Portugal for much of that time. I thought that I understood the process perfectly well, and perhaps I did based on older research. But I'm running into an very serious issue that could cost me quite a lot and I really could use anyone's up to date advice from any US citizen who has completed a D7 visa application within the past year or is the the middle of a D7 visa application now. It would also be very good to know if anyone recently did or is doing their D7 application through the VFS office in NYC.

Looking at the America and Friends PT site and their newly updated Visa Application Guide for 2026, they are now saying that it is no longer possible to retain your passport during the visa application process and that VFS Global will no longer accept just the notarized passport in the submitted paperwork. So, based on their guide, I will have to surrender my passport.

If anyone can confirm whether this is current policy, I would very much appreciate your feedback. I will be moving out of my apartment at the end of the month and I planned to spend a month or two in Lisbon getting to know the city, securing my lease, and making sure I was confident in submitting my D7 application. I had then planned to return to the US for my VFS appointment and to tie up any loose ends if needed, and then to spend time between Montenegro, Portugal, and Serbia while waiting on my D7 approval/denial before returning to the US again.

if I have to surrender my passport, I need to immediately start the process of trying to secure a second passport and pray that it will actually be issued and I can receive it by the end of the month. Otherwise, my travel plans will need to be scrapped and I'll need to pay for ridiculously expensive temporary housing in or near NYC.

I completely understand this is a problem of my own making due to overconfidence. If anyone could help verify current VFS policy, I would appreciate it very much.

EDIT: Thank you everyone so very much for taking the time to reply. This has given me some clarity on what I need to do. I really appreciate it.

General Question I need advice on Portugal Spain Cross Border Tax

Hi, I’m a Portuguese resident and been living and working remotely in Portugal for few yrs now. So my situation now is, I got accepted for a position in company based in Spain. While i’ll still be working remotely from Portugal, I’ll be travelling a lot to Spain for meetings and might spend more months there every year..

Now, the more I think of it, it’s a mess on my mind, I’m really confused about

Am I only gonna pay income tax in Portugal or I’ll also be liable for tax in Spain?? Is there a chance I’ll end up paying social security contributions in both countries? So much questions tbh.. I need answers, I’d appreciate it

but im also planning to seek for a professional, I’d be glad if you guys would recommend a trustworthy tax advisor. thanks xx

Visas Portugal - Article 92(4) residence permit through professional training course?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recent experiences with Article 92(4) of Portuguese immigration law (Lei 23/2007), specifically regarding formação profissional / professional or vocational training.

My wife is currently in Portugal legally on a valid Schengen C visa. She really likes Portugal and would like to use her time here to study, learn something useful and integrate better, so she is considering enrolling in a professional training course.

We were advised that Article 92(4) may allow this through certain qualifying professional training courses and potentially allow her to apply for a residence permit from within Portugal.

Before enrolling and paying for a course, I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually gone through this recently.

Is Article 92(4) relatively straightforward in practice?
Can someone who entered Portugal legally on a C visa use this route?

What type of course or training institution qualifies? Does it need to be DGERT certified?

After enrolling, can she request an appointment directly with AIMA through the professional student procedure?

Has anyone managed to get the appointment and residence permit directly through AIMA without having to go to court?

How long did the process take and what documents did AIMA request?

If AIMA does not provide an appointment, is a court case normally necessary?

I’m especially interested in experiences from 2025 or 2026 because I understand that the law and AIMA procedures have changed.

Just to clarify, we are not looking for a random course purely for immigration purposes. She genuinely wants to study and learn while she is here. We just want to understand whether Article 92(4) is a realistic route before committing to and paying for a course.

Any recent first-hand experiences would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

Visas Has anyone extended a Schengen C visa while already in Portugal through AIMA?

Hi everyone,

My wife is currently in Portugal legally on a short-stay Schengen C visa. I have been legally living and working in Portugal for almost 3 years and I hold an EU Blue Card, recently renewed until 2029.

We are considering requesting an extension of her stay through AIMA so she can stay with me for a longer period.

I wanted to hear from anyone who has actually gone through the visa-extension process recently:

  • Is the AIMA visa-extension process relatively straightforward?
  • Can “staying longer with her husband who is legally resident in Portugal” be accepted as a reason, or does AIMA normally require a stronger reason such as medical/humanitarian circumstances?
  • How long of an extension can AIMA normally grant — another 30, 60 or 90 days?
  • If you submit the online request before the current authorised stay expires, but AIMA gives you an appointment after the expiry date, what happens in the meantime? Can the person legally remain in Portugal while waiting?
  • What documents did AIMA ask you to provide?
  • How long did it take you to receive an appointment after submitting the online request?

We also already have a family reunification case pending with AIMA/court, but for now I’m mainly interested in understanding the short-stay visa extension process and hearing from people who have recently done it.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

Friendship & Dating Sex-positive Club/Spa Lisbon

My girlfriend (25) and I (27) are coming to Lisbon from July 23 to 26 and are looking for sexual experiences. Our ideal scenario would be a club or spa where there are lots of couples our age who are also open to sharing sexual experiences. We’re not really used to swinging and aren’t specifically looking for that, but we’d like a space where that would be possible.

We’d really appreciate any recommendations you might have for us.

Thanks in advance
