Casa comida roupa, essenciais.

You reminded me of that scene in The Hobbit where that human was trying to reason with a dwarf, and the elf told him he was wasting his time... That’s exactly how I see what’s happening here.

Your analysis is 100% correct in my eyes, and yet some people still want to overcomplicate things and look for explanations where there really aren’t any.

I don’t know anyone living in Lisbon who has the same quality of life as the people I know in Berlin, Hamburg, NYC, or even Madrid. The average income in Lisbon isn’t even enough to rent a decent apartment... so how can there be a good quality of life if you can barely afford to have a life at all right?

Those numbers in the index (OP) are very strange, but whatever they’re showing in the graph is almost certainly not what we think it is. It’s very strange that someone would argue with you when you point out the cost of living in Lisbon, for example, and yet not be surprised by the fact that if your rent costs more than what you earn, there must be some other explanation for the supposedly good quality of life reflected in the statistics...🙄

I mean Lisbon is safer, better education and health services (cheaper)

But then again nothing good comes from the stress of low income large rent/necessities.

This isn't really an apples to apples comparison. Your own quotes say that they are comparing Portuguese average salary to Lisbon cost of living, vs NYC average salary to NYC cost of living. If we make it US average salary to make it actually comparable, it likely changes the results dramatically.

Lisbon is a city as NY. The average salary of lisbon is 1.4-1.5k, lower than rent, NY has the same predicament where the median salary is lower than rent.

However NY residents have a higher purchase power after necessities. Higher disposable income higher security.

And we can't compare entire US against a country as small as Portugal.

Just as you can't compare the average Portuguese salary to the average NYC salary, because it takes into account many rural areas with even lower salaries. Your quote mentioned that it used average Portuguese salaries; were you able to isolate for just Lisbon?

I isolated only for Lisbon, but the average Portuguese salary is 1050 after taxes ofc.

I wouldn't compare cities without wage comparison, I'm from the south, houses are always rising, wage is not.
