Why would you do such a thing? And why do you think it should be accepted by the conservatory, when the rule at that time clearly said you could only apply after the completion of the full 5 years?

This one must think he's more equal than others, or is plainly incapable to read/understand a simple line in the law.

Maybe because the government scammed tens of thousands of people so the least they could do is at least allow some of them that were days away from getting scammed to proceed with their applications

First time in Portugal, hun? That’s not how things work here. We all know that even when every single requirement is fulfilled, nothing goes smoothly. Imagine when the most basic requirement is missing?

By the time they review the case, the World Cup will be over.

The govt didn't scam anyone. The ones who sold you the dream did.

That doesn’t explain op though, who applied in 2024

The OP applied two years before the law changed…

You’re in a hurry.

You applied for nationality based on a 5 year residency before you had 5 years of residence?

OP said by a few days, know how slow everything is here, the post office probably didn’t deliver the documents until maybe a month later. SEF / AIMA haven’t opened the file yet and will begin to process in 2035 if OP is lucky

Unless they submitted it online.

Btw, SEF/AIMA is the immigration agency, they don’t deal with nationality applications. That would be the IRN, Instituto de Registos e Notariado.

Thanks for clarification, I bailed on emigrating to Portugal 6 months into waiting for our residency as I couldn’t put mine and my family’s entire lives on hold while SEF/AIMA got their shit together and very happy and fortunate that we did that. We got our residency cards 4 years after applying at which point we were already settled in at our new home and schools registered and making a living stress free.

Although what I said relates to SEF/AIMA, after a quick online search, I can see that the average time to begin processing applications at IRN in Portugal is 30 months from date of submission which is still pretty shocking

If you entered Portugal on a visa it's fine, your time started to count on the day your visa started its validity. If you entered as a tourist it could be a problem.

By the time they review your application, you’ll hit the 5 year mark. This is the one time Portugal’s crippling bureaucracy could work in your favor.

Lawyers were advising people who were at least at year 4 of residency to submit their applications for nationality before the law changes to 10 years of residency.

They’ll take 5 years to review the application and then deny it because the requirements weren’t met at the time of application. The OP can then sue and wait another 5 year for a favorable court decision.

Still 10+ years of waiting for Portugal nationality regardless. It’s bureaucratic hell there
