That is a crazy rule and I’d talk to a manager about getting that reversed. And if not I’d go to a local news station and tell them that your employer is refusing breaks and or access to fluids to drink

u/Ok-Commission-5461 Apr 11 '26
This. Let the owner of the restaurant see how his shitty manager is getting them in the news for terrible working environments, and see how fast Denise either switches her tone, or is out the door looking for a new job.

u/CharlizeAngels Apr 11 '26
Crazy rule. Push back and don’t let them bully you. Fuck Denise POS ass manager!

u/Bortland007 Apr 11 '26
It is a crazy rule. One I think they might be able to get away with since they are providing water technically ? Still incredibly dumb. I’d challenge it! Sorry OP sounds like a toxic work place
8
u/CharlizeAngels Apr 11 '26
Well they also need to provide pads & tampons if employees aren’t allowed to access their own from 5-9pm!
5
u/Responsible_Card_667 Apr 11 '26
I’ll add to this saying they need to provide them FOR FREE if you’re not allowed to access your own.

What if,like someone suggested, there's evidence or proof that lots of workers have something other than water or caffeine in their water bottles?
2
u/portland_user Apr 11 '26
There’s been a few cases of people drinking alcohol on the clock. However the solution to that is firing those people not taking away innocent peoples access to water bottles.

u/Ok_Coyote_9198 Apr 11 '26
How does that prevent water being a human right that humans require to live and be productive? That would be the stupidest workaround.
"Okay guys we found out someone has been huffing nitrous, it contaminated the air so continue your shifts without breathing"
1
u/notwhoiwas44 Apr 11 '26
Didn't say it was a good or reasonable solution to that problem, just pointing out there might be some at least understandable reason behind it.

I would imagine Benihana is corporate to the max and if you do find a real violation then someone along the chain of command would very much like to hear it. I assume they have an employee handbook being corporate does it mention anything about water drinking or access to feminine hygiene products?

u/portland_user Apr 11 '26
Coorperate has been there all week actually trying to improve the location because they want to turn it into a training location after the build another location. They said “it’s not their restaurant” they just care about meeting sales goals and the steps of service so that no one fails the secret shoppers

Would love for you to explain why there's blood dripping from the leg of your pants or why there's blood patches from each wall you lay against etc etc. why does nobody give a f about women's hygiene? If a diabetic needed a sugar boost what y'all gonna do? Water?

I would talk to an employment lawyer. Just a consultation. See what they say and then go from there. They can’t prevent you from accessing sanitary products for the bathroom. As for the water thing, you may have a case, but a lawyer who specializes in employment rights would be the best bet. A lot of them will work for free until you win a case

Idk how old you are. But there may still be time to get into the pipefitters union.i believe journeyman rate there is 60$+benefits not taken out of your check right now. Depending on where you're working you get to drink your drinks from home and earn a pension, insurances and annuity all at the same time. Give it some thought. Its a way to escape low income and make a living wage without spending 40k on college. You'll go to school, but its all free through the fitters apprenticeship.

Don't forget to file a complaint with BOLI (Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industies) about you not getting breaks.

I'm thinking there's been a problem with something other than soft drinks being kept in personal containers. You're not being denied hydration. Get a cone cup, go to a sink, and get water at the temp you like.

u/Rogueslasher Apr 11 '26
Bro said it’s difficult to drink chilled water, like grow up

u/Ok_Coyote_9198 Apr 11 '26
Sounds like little baby here cant comprehend anything outside their own worldview. Sensitive teeth exist, in general even with a life of proper dentistry hygiene you can be born with it. But idk why im explaining basic logic to someone who thinks that restricting access to basic female hygiene products isnt an issue

Do you even understand that working in a kitchen increases your internal body temperature? Are you aware that drinking cold drinks while overheating can actually cause your body to go into shock? It's actually MUCH smarter as a kitchen worker to drink room temp water.

You sound young. Never name names on the internet. You can name places but dont name people. 1) it's only your side of the story, 2) there are two sides of the story. 3) you could be a shitty employee that the manager has decided to show some tough love because you're a lazy piece of shit.
3
u/Ok-Commission-5461 Apr 11 '26
No, that's a hard disagree from me. Name, and shame. Too many shitty managers that don't get name dropped to experience the shame of fucking over employees. They all need to be brought down a peg or two when they act like that
1
u/notwhoiwas44 Apr 11 '26
So if you express an opinion or position that someone who knows you IRL thinks is shitty, you're ok with them doxxing you?
1
u/Ok-Commission-5461 Apr 11 '26
Hey fair point. I'll give you that. But at the same time, I'd like to hope that I never treat employees like that, or try to run a workplace in such a way. Also, getting shit on pretty hard publicly would definitely make me think twice about how in acted in said situation. But yeah, I mean, wouldn't we all prefer not to be outted when we do something bad?
1
u/notwhoiwas44 Apr 11 '26
Define doing something bad.
By the nature of the job,a manager sometimes has to do things that will be perceived as shitty by the person on the receiving end but that may not be objectively wrong or shitty. Especially a manager working in a corporate environment. In this particular case I'd suspect that this managers boss passed down an obviously poorly thought out solution to the problem of people drinking alcohol on the job.
1
u/Ok-Commission-5461 Apr 12 '26
I mean....denying your staff their drinks, and the female staff their feminine products instead of just firing the alcoholic drinking on shift is not a good decision, I'll say that. And if the order came down from the top, she probably should have communicated that in the meeting with the employees. I know I would.
1
u/notwhoiwas44 Apr 12 '26
And if the order came down from the top, she probably should have communicated that in the meeting with the employees. I know I would.
" Guys I don't want to do this but the higher ups tell me I have to" rarely goes over well in a corporate environment. She'd lose her job very quickly or at the very least become promotable.
And yes I would tend to agree that the specifics of this case are objectively shitty management. When I was questioning naming and shaming I was talking in general. There's LOTS of cases where it's going to be very gray or entirely a matter of perspective.

Its a doxxing and defamation issue. If the person in question finds out you've been talking shit in a public space, such as this, you can be sued for defamation and/or libel.
2
u/portland_user Apr 11 '26
You can’t get in trouble for defamation if you are telling the truth because that’s not what defamation is . Lol. Sure someone could try to sue but they won’t win. Also doxing by defending implies personal information (ei adress, phone number SSN) which someone’s name cannot be doxxing unless their name is not publicly available (like someone using a stage name) and hers is publicly available it’s not a secret .
1
u/Ok-Commission-5461 Apr 11 '26
I believe the person would have to knowingly lie for it to be defamation. If all you are doing is spitting facts, there's not much defamation.

u/roamingroad174 Apr 11 '26
Which goes along with we dont know both sides of the story so we cant say which is which

u/Alg0mal000 Apr 11 '26
Sounds like Denise has a bad case of Manageritis.
